Dan, Thanks for your feedback on the Bell tailwheel (mine has yet to
rrive) - it sounds as though I will need to be vigilant on the maintenance.
In several yeas I have never once had this problem with my Pitts S1, which
can be a handful in strong conditions and is fitted with a Maule TW. I
agree about tailwheel steering awareness - in this case I had a v. strong
crosswind and managed to control the roll out until the rudder became
ineffective, however the crosswind was far too strong for differential
braking without additional power and blew the plane towards the edge of the
runway - and therein lies the problem, as in order to keep her straight (I
had no passenger in the back) the tail lifted and I am sure you know the
scenario. I shutdown, had a cup of tea, and then got a guy to ride in the
back to the hangar, where we stripped the TW and found the problem, and now
all is well.
Anyway, my point is that the Vans tailwheel design or manufacturing should
be improved. In extreme conditions, it can cause pilots severe damage to the
aircraft, if it fails, as it regularly does without special attention. In my
opinion it is not safe (others have obviously had the same problems). I
think you will agree that a pilot that has spent several years building an
RV8, shouldn't have to find out the hard way, that a new tailwheel with zero
hours has a problem which "could" cause the aircraft to end up off the
runway. Rgds, Nic

I had the problem caused by me not keeping it cleaned
and greased so I now take it apart every 150 hours and service it. I am
not familiar with Doug Bell set up, so would somebody send me his
web-site.
Thanks

Charlie,
You might be able to buy a new Superior XP360 and sell your core for a net
of close to the cost of an overhaul or less.... Just a thought.

I have been using my 2000C for over a year and the only problem I have is sometimes
when I turn it on, it lights up but the screen has lines and is not usable.
I have to pull the batteries out and then reboot it sometimes two or three
times before it will work. Otherwise, I love it especially since I got the terrian
chip just before fun and sun. I was told that you can buy a larger memory
card and send both it and the new terrian chip back to lorrance and they will
put the terrain on your larger chip, or is is an option to get a larger chip.
You have to upgrade to the 1.4 version system.

Subject: | panel installation - radio trays |
--> RV-List message posted by: sarg314 <sarg314@comcast.net>
I am getting down to the little details on panel design and am wondering
about clearance between instruments and my radio stack. The "stack" is
only an SL-30 radio and a KT-76C transponder. I have the trasponder in
hand, but not the radio yet. (I guess it's about time I rodered it.)
I gather these are normally mounted in a some sort of framework that
attaches to the panel but I've never seen one of these. How close can I
realistically place an instrument to this support frame? Does any one
have any photos on their web site that I can look at?
Thanks,

It's the smaller MMC chip. Theres no need to send the card to lowrance to
have the software transferred as the files are easily moved around with
windows. I've seen 2gig cards for 89$. Which should be plenty. The entire
aviation database with terrain is 500 meg and I just mapped the northeast
from ky to ny and it took 500 meg with all points of interest so 200 meg
will get probably do east or west us terrestrial with complete aviation
info.

I used 3/4" al angle for the frame, behind and attached to the panel.
I suppose you could use 1/2" al angle too.
See pics and desc here. Look for entry dated 6/14/04
