Hi All-
Does anyone have any feedback on commercially available upper intersection
fairings for my RV-8? I'm just about fiberglass happy at this point, and
would buy a set if they are good / will actually reduce the time I'll spend
on them.
TIA-

I got a set from http://www.fairings-etc.com/home.htm They aren't cheap, and you won't get them too quickly, but they are really nice.
Cheers,
Rusty

Hi there:
I'm in the process of moving the RV Builder's Hotline over to the
Expercraft server, and today I started playing with the Google
custom search engine.
I've set up a RV-specific Google search here (http://rvhotline.expercraft.com/articles/search.html)
( http://rvhotline.expercraft.com/articles/search.html ), that
currently searches the Hotline archives, VAF, VAF forums, Matronics,
myrv10.com, rvproject.com, Rivetbangers and a few others.
Still some bugs to work out, but I'd like to add other sites, and
the page allows for collaborators to add their sites. And the code
is also provided there if folks want to use it on their own sites.
If you'd like to collaborate, go here:

I think this could be a good and useful tool to continue
aggregating RV information across the far-flung universe.
Apologies for cross postings.

If unable to locate, any suggestions?

Could you explain the reasons you are willing to spend several thousand
dollars for a FADEC system on your XP-360?
I am at a loss why new technology is so appealing to people "before" it is
even realistically proven reliable in a critical area such as the powerplant.
It ain't broke, so don't fix it.
I had my Lycoming IO-540 "gami-fied" by Don Rivera and it is absolutely
running perfectly, and at less fuel flow than anyone ever thought. I use 9.3 gph,
at 21" and 2050 rpm, which is about 52%, and cruise my Harmon Rocket at 188
knots for efficiency. Push it up to 23"/ 2250rpm, and burn 10.1 at 196 knots.
All validated by Vision Microsystems 1000, and good ole G.P.S.
Can you in your widest dreams, ever save fuel over these numbers, or engine
life span, or anything that will pay you back Three Grand?

I want to understand this better, as I am currently 'getting baffled' on my
-7A. Why was air flowing out the front center of the baffles? Do you mean
that it just pushes right through the seal material and there is really
nothing that could easily fix the problem at that location (instead of the
documented fix at the ramps)?

Okay Guys & Gals, Just to give "closure" to this issue, I wussied-out and took
the path of least resistance (and the most $$$). I just sent my Dukes pump
back to Dukes Inc. The cost was $440 for a complete overhaul and it took 10
calendar days total door-to-door. It works great and I probably won't regret
it unless it fails in the next four years.
If it does fail, I'll wish I would have built up my own system. And I still
might, for my "in-the-works" 3-pete offender RV-4 project (wings & tail done,
fuselage out-of jig, engine awaits tear-down). Sheeeett... Now I remember
why I coughed-up the $$$, I don't have any time and I want to fly my 4 !!!

Dan,
I wrote that post and I can't find it either. I've saved some of this info on
my hard drive. FYI, I wasn't the first one to figure out you could buy this stuff.
I am including some of the stuff I saved on this subject below.

I bought the same pump (API) from NAPA this morning. I will have to use the plumbing
and parts off of my API pump, but not a problem. The cost was
$134. Carter P/N is P74015. The box it came in reads Supplied to NAPA by Carter
Fuel Systems Federal Mogul Southfield, MI.
Kevin Ebsen
Listers,
I checked with my local auto parts supplier. The part number supplied by Kevin
is the actual Carter part number. These pumps are used on the following vehicles.
1983-86 Ford & Mercury 4 cylinder engines
1971-82 Volvo 4 cylinder engines
1976-82 " 6 " "
1975-77 BMW 6 cylinder engines
1975-80 Cadillac 8 cylinder engines
I was quoted $137 (wholesale) Even if this is not a savings over API's price,
it's valuable information to have. At least if your pump fails, you know you can
get one at an auto parts store, rather than Fed Ex ing one from API.

The filter is from "Flow Ezy".

I have a model 4ILA with 3/8 pipe thread, 74 micron screen, viton O-ring, black
color. PN- 4ILA-03-74-F3-BL
Be careful when modifying your fuel system. Unexpected things can happen.
George Meketa RV8, ACGM@GVTC.COM N444TX, 261.3 hours
FYI, This is a slightly smaller version of the 6 ILA model Airflow Performance
sells. Pegasus Auto Racing carries this item now, with Viton seals (resists auto
fuels, gasahol, etc) and a 25 micron screen. I convinced RV-9A builder Chris
Heitman (the owner) to stock these by arranging a "group purchase" several years
ago. I am using 2 of these units, one in each wing root area. See
http://flowezy.freeyellow.com/racingMODEL_4ILA.html
http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/productdetails.asp?RecId=3469
For those who have the stock 6ILA filter sold by Airflow Performance and Vans,
you can get the Viton seals and better screen filter elements from Flow Ezy or
one of their distributors. It's harder to find the model 6 ILA filter on Flow
Ezy's web site, as they consider it a "high pressure filter". See the 8th item
from the top of the page below.
http://198.170.245.162/flowezypagehydraulicfilters.html#HIGHPRESSUREIN-LINEFILTER
I hope this helps

Hi Mike,
I tried to find message "121131" in the archives, but apparently it won't let me
search on the message number. There are 1573 hits on "fuel pump". Any suggestions
on how to find messages relevant to this pump?

A direct fuel pump replacement for the AFP electric fuel pump is the
Carter fuel pump part number P74015
I have replaced mine on the road before readily available from Napa or
autozone ~$120
A search of the archives will help. Message 121131
It was Charlie Kuss that had all the G2 on the pumps and filters. I had
2 pumps maybe 3 die on my rv-6 in 1500 hours. I had to run my pump above
7k' for vapor lock so mine ran a lot. A change in the filter element to
a finer filter solved the problem and I used that same smaller micron
filter for my 8.
Enjoy,
Mike

Subject: RE: Fuel-Boost pump rebuild kit
From: "Greg Lewin" <lewin@dukesinc.com>
Chuck,
The 12 volt equivalent to the 4140-00-15 is 4140-00-17. The repair kit is 2140-220
or the overhaul kit is 2140-224. The repair kit cost is $260.00 and the
overhaul kit is $295.00. The overhaul kit contains all of the same parts as the
repair kit plus bearings and brushes for the motor.
Please be aware that the pump will require recalibration on a fuel bench after
the parts are installed !
The pump can be returned to Dukes for overhaul, cost is $440.00.

Subject: RE: Fuel-Boost pump rebuild kit
Greg,
The pump looks like your part number 4140-00-15, except it's 12 volt and puts
out about 18 psi. It has thr "Dukes Inc" standard red metal label, but there's
no part number, no serial number, or any info fill out in the blanks on the
label. On the pump part of it (not the electric motor part) I can read "DBL
IMP AMC" but I haven't a clue what that means.
The pumps spins, when current is applied, but won't pressurize. I took it apart
and found the shaft pin is sheared-off in the shaft. I figure I should
just replace the vanes, seals, etc... I have this on my RV-4 (I built from
scratch; as well as I have earned my FAA Repairman's certificate to go with it.)
Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.
Sincerely, Chuck

Chuck,
Kits can be ordered direct from Dukes but we will need to know the part number
of the pump to verify which kit you need.
