Listers',
Does anyone know of a good place and/or person available to help me transition
from "Nosedrager" to "Taildrager"? I'm due for my BFR and would like to
use that training to accomplish it. With all the 'Hubbub' about the Nose Wheel
Situation, I'd like to have that option; since I'm at that point in my 6(A)
construction. I'm also considering purchasing a Taildrager, so suggestions are
well received and most welcome. Thanks.

I would also enthusiastically recommend Jan Bussell as an excellent
instructor. I did a combined biennial check and transition to a -6A with
him. My first flight in my -6A was almost a non event.

Sounds like you can build either a 6 or 6A? I can't advise as to where to
get tailwheel instruction, but do have an opinion on the choice between the
two.
I've got over a hundred hours in tailwheels (mostly a J-3, but also Aeronca
and Decathlon). Nevertheless when I started looking for a small two-place
certificated plane to buy a few years ago I never seriously considered a
tailwheel airplane. I wanted to fly cross-country, and knew that after
several hours of being bounced around in hot, lumpy air, the last thing I
wanted to try was landing a tailwheel in a 10- to 15-knot cross-wind
somewhere. I ended up getting an Aircoupe which I still have while I start
building a -9A.
By no means am I dissing tailwheel aircraft. I'm just saying for me, as
much as I enjoyed my time in the Cub and others, I knew I was not a hot-shot
pilot and wanted the greater ease of a trike-gear plane. So I would urge
you to get the tailwheel instruction and keep flying one for a while, then
make a realistic decision for you and your expected flying trips.

A question:
What if we keep the original nose gear leg and only change the fork?
What are the implications of having the nose gear 1 inch longer?
I'm not flying my -9A yet but would like to know your thoughts...

Chances are that you may land on the nosegear first, due to its
increased angle of attack stance.
The nosegear is not designed as a landing gear (per Vans), but rather
only a taxi gear.

Joe,
The new fork has the same geometry as the old except the bearing
area is shortened from the bottom. This allows the leg to be an inch
shorter allowing more ground clearance. The choice is do the mod or not.
If you do the mod you can choose either to replace or rework the leg.

I believe that the below statement is wrong. The top of the new fork
and the axle holes are
in the same place. If you do not modify the threads on the old gear leg
then you can't
use the new fork.
Either stay with your current setup which many will say is ok OR
rethread the old gear leg
and install the new fork

If I'm not mistaken, Jan is in Florida; Yes? I'm located in Lake Elsinore,
California. I'd love nothing more that to receive training from one with
such great references, but I think the commute just might present a problem
. Can you recommend some one local?
Thanks, RC.

Thanks, Ralph. I also question the idea of a Tail wheel plane as an interm
ediate during my 6A construction. I found a Biplane that seems to 'scratch
my itch' which is a tailwheel, and I'm curious to see how much of a challe
nge it might present. I guess that'll be answered during training.

Jerry,
Actually , I haven't as of yet. It's not so much about the cost as it
is about the confident enjoyment received once it's complete. Kinda' like
manual vs automatic transmission. Do I want to "Work-it" or just watch it
work? (If ya know what I mean).

Looks to me like you could save the expense and trouble of changing anythin
g if you don't shorten the gear on the lower end. The whole point is to gai
n an inch of clearance ahead of the nose wheel...that requires removal of t
he forward bottom edge of the fork (from Van's) and the 1"shorter gear leg
to match it.
If there were enough thread on the old style gear legs we could just buy
the new fork and hacksaw the 1"off of the gear.
