Hi Jerry,
I had similar symptoms with my 296, but mine turned out to be the antenna. Bad
shield splice by builder, Me. Took same apart, went to? Knuckolls?site for how
to do it right, and now working better than ever.

My answer would be either run it through a breeder reactor and re-use or
store it in the already built and paid for facility in Nevada. Problem
solved (for engineers anyway).
Political football players will have to come up with their own.

Jerry:
That's not the case here.? Those of us experiencing this problem, it is the unit
losing the time/date, not a signal problem.? When the unit does not properly
store the date, it does not know where to look for the satellites when its next
turned on, therefor it is "lost" for a long time until it figures out where
it is and updates the clock.? Then the unit works fine until the next time its
shut off for any length of time.
Its definitely an internal clock issue and not an antenna issue.? The problem is
this: is it a software issue, or a battery issue?? Most of the problems are
being experienced by relatively new units, and all within the last year.? Seems
like there must be a Garmin common problem, and thus a Garmin "fix"?

I was the first to comment on this, and mine's not a new unit. Perhaps 5
years old now. I last flew on 3/3, then went again yesterday and the unit
thought the date was 3/11, so the thing seems to wander off into the weeds
after a week of inactivity. Fixes itself rather promptly if the new
location, automatic detect menu features are stepped through, otherwise it
gives up trying to find a fix after a few m inutes and asks if I want to
start simulator mode.
