Drop them to fill them and then lift them back into place. Plus when you don't need them you just leave them in the hangar; yes? Drop tanks were used on fighters to go long distances to engage, just before they engaged the enemy airplanes, the tanks were dropped. They were dropped to reduce drag and increase the edge, if possible.
