Well, here is one reason. I have fuel at my hangar and can refuel my own
plane. If I fly 2 hours to somewhere and the fuel cost is high or they have
no fuel then I end up needing to fly somewhere else to get fuel. Sometimes
that fly somewhere else cost a bunch also. It isn't that I need 5 or 6
hours in the air, but I would find great convenience in being able to fly
somewhere for that $ hamburger and still get back home without having to go
chase fuel every time.
Just another perspective. I do not have long range tanks, but have thought
about it often; but just for the convenience.

Doesn't the "drop" only have to do with how you fill them? Drop them to
fill them and then lift them back into place. Plus when you don't need them
you just leave them in the hangar; yes?

The post on the T-18 web site says they are not "drop" tanks. Just 5 extra
gallons if your badder can handle it!

That's why are airplanes are called "experimental". We can experiment with
about anything we like. Tom obviously, was looking for more fuel capacity.
T-18's with standard tanks only carry 29 gallons of fuel. Some have added
fuel in the wing which greatly increases capacity. However, not an option for
retrofit.

I understand Tim's reasoning. My $1.89 high-test is in the hangar, not at
the distant airport. But sometimes I do make point of picking up a little
100LL on the road, so to speak, just to keep things leaded-up and
vapor-pressured-down.

I'm no iron butt (or bladder) either however the answer is simple, and its
got to do with that old guy Murphy. Lets say you're on a trip, its late in
the evening because you're running behind, and your 3 hour planned stop goes
to shit because of the weather and none of the airports nearby have a credit
card pump. Couple that with the possibility of being stuck for a few days
with deteriorating weather if you decide to stop and spend the night. So
you have to press on, perhaps an hour or more down the road to the next
place that has gas and its available. That's when you want aux tanks. Been
there done that, that's why I have aux tanks in my rocket in addition to the
52 gallon tanks. It just gives you more options; most of the time they'll
stay empty except for the long trips.

Simply as a project I built an auxiliary fuel tank to mount in my RV6A
in place of a passengter. It was shaped to fit in that area and holds 18
gallons. I was happy to have it, because my main tanks began to show the
dreaded pealing of the
slosh material. As I was waiting for Johnson to make me two new tanks I
flew for several months using only that aux tank, and it took a while to
get used to have fuel right next to me. With the aux tank plus mains I
could carry 56 gallons, and at a burn at 6.1 gph I could get 9-hours, 10
minutes until fuel exhaustion. M\y aim was non-stop from central
Colorado to Oshkosh. ... never did it but the project was
interesting....

Shemp -
This one looks remarkably similar to an automotive turn signal / marker
light.
It's marked:
SYL
ERC
Or maybe it's
SYL
ERG
The receptacle is marked: TP20 - (bulb type?)

If you've got a strobe in the tail (combo strobe & white tail light) it's
non-standard. If the strobes are only on the wing tips the tail & wing nav
lights use a standard bulb.
