THE INSTALL MANUAL
Thanks for your response Jerry. Haven't found the problem yet because I
converted it back to the portable config to fly cross country last week. It
is coming down to one of three wires and I'll check the ground and shield
circuit paths this weekend. Appreciate you passing along your
troubleshooting experience. - Gregg

I did same thing on my -6A; first engine runs (two, very short) and
initial taxi test were done with front top skin fully cleco'd in place.
I didn't rivet that last skin until a week or two before the final
inspection. No problems with the engine runs or taxi test.
If concerned about the engine run with the skin only cleco'd then go
ahead and rivet before running for peace of mind but I'd definitely
leave that last forward top skin off as long as possible, and wouldn't
have any hesitation about hanging the engine.

I experienced zero problems hanging the engine prior the
installing the forward upper skin on both the -6A and the -8. I
completed all instrument wiring and tested the radios and other panel
circuitry while the fuselage was still in the garage minus the wings.
Indeed, having that open access greatly eases ergonomic complications
when working behind the instrument panel. Make it easy on yourself. Put
off installing that upper skin until you absolutely have to. The first
photo documents engine installation on the -8 without the forward upper
skin in place. In fact, for a good fit I recommend you do not complete
the forward baggage door installation until AFTER the engine is hung.

As far starting the engine, as the second photo graphically
shows I simply 100% clecoed the -6A upper skin into place for the first
engine starts and the procedure worked out just fine, not one cleco
managed to vibrate loose.

The era of the big RVers BBQ at Oshkosh is over, let the return-to-basics begin!
We'll get together for an evening of sitting around doing nothing, not picking
door prizes, not cooking, not sitting under a tent, not drinking someone else's
free beer. In other words, it'll be a perfect Oshkosh evening.
You're invited to stop by in the campground where we'll have -- hopefully -- plenty
of space for you to sit (on the chair that you bring), drinking beer or soft
drinks (that you brought) and eating some food (that you cooked on the small,
cheapie WalMart grill that we'll buy. We're not entirely without the desire
for a little work!)
See details here.

Here's another useful tool!

The Knipex parallel action pliers (in the larger size) works well as a
rivet squeezer for #3 rivets.
The handles angle off about 45 deg. compared to a regular squeezer where
they are at 90 deg.
The particular situation where I found the tool useful was in riveting
platenuts to F-615 which is the
outboard seat rib in the 6. The armrest was in the way of a regular
squeezer.
