Joe, here is my 2 cents too.- We just finished up that part of my RV 9A a bout 3 weeks ago.- I do not have access panels in the skin like you do, s o we took it the traditional way.-We started riveting the center rib from the panel end down to the firewall.- Do not rivet the firewall to the to p skin until every other rivet is in place.- We then worked the sub panel rib putting in as many clecoes as possible that would allow an arm to fit inside.- At some point you will move to bucking underneath the skin by cl imbing in the plane and working on your back under the skin.- (No fun her e and a heavy blanket is needed)- As far as hole alignment goes, we did n ot have any issues and all holes lined up.- The hard part of this step is to be bucking from on your back.- It is tight and not much room to move, but you can at least see where the rivet tails are.- You may also need t o modify several bucking bars to get into the tight and awkward places.- - Best of luck and the back and shoulder aches subside in a week or two! - Good Luck, Steve Koziol N424JK- (moving to airport for final assembly in a few days) --- On Mon, 6/1/09, Joe & Jan Connell <jconnell@fmwildblue.com> wrote: From: Joe & Jan Connell <jconnell@fmwildblue.com> Subject: RV-List: Riveting Top Forward Skin on RV-9 Gentlemen, - I'm almost ready to close and rivet the top forward skin on our RV-9A.- I need to take pictures and document the area before I close it. - In the past I've always clecoed every panel in its entirety before beginnin g to rivet.- Has anyone ever partially riveted one side of the top forwar d skin WITHOUT having clecoed the rest of the skin in place before beginnin g to rivet?- If I could do this it would really ease trying to buck some of the rivets from within. - My sense is I might get skin creep or be unable to match the holes in the r est of the panel if I attempt to do this. - I have a pair of 7 x 8 access panels in the center panels of this skin so t his will help riveting everything in the center areas. - Success and failure stories are welcome - thanks... - Joe Connell Stewartville, MN RV-9A N95JJ =0A=0A=0A

RV ers I am having trouble with my trim indicators. The elevator indicator has the one spot where the indicator does not light. The aileron indicator does not light at all. Both trims work but I would like to have the indicators also work. Any suggestions? Rollie & Rod RV6 **************An Excellent Credit Score is 750. See Yours in Just 2 Easy Steps! eExcfooterNO62)

I had a similar issue with mine - I have four of them in my plane (flap, rudder, elevator, and aileron). I ended up replacing three of them through the course of my build. I have not had any issues lately. I don't know if they caught an electrical spike or a manufacturing defect - but between replacing a bunch of them, putting spike catcher diodes on a couple of my relays, replacing my battery, and ceasing the use of an adjustable power supply to run my electronics in the hangar my issues have gone. Knock on wood....... -----Original Message----- >From: Rquinn1@aol.com >Sent: Jun 2, 2009 5:11 PM >To: rv-list@matronics.com >Subject: RV-List: (no subject) > >RV ers I am having trouble with my trim indicators. I have an XM "aviator lite" weather subscription, received by a WX WORX receiver and interfaced to my Grand Rapids EFIS. It routinely takes 12 minutes or so after I've fired up the avionics before I get a radar picture. Then when flying on a long cross country I sometimes see messages saying "radar data 21 minutes old". I thought XM sent out refreshed packages no more than 5 minutes apart. My friend has a Garmin 496 and he says he acquires a radar picture within 2 minutes and never sees anything older than 5 minutes. What gives with my system? In reading the latest issue of Kitplane magazine they say that Garmin has their own "built in" receiver, whereas I have a separate stand-alone box. Could there be something inferior or malfunctioning with my WX WORX receiver? Has anyone had a similar experience? Garry Stout RV-7A Tampa, FL

I have a Garmin 396 and it acts exactly the same. I believe that Garmin states the Doppler data can be 20 minutes late, and when I'm dodging around weather I can tell that it definitely is. Not perfect but still worth the expense to me. Garry, I would verify that your XM antenna has a clear view to the sky and that there are no problems with the wiring and connections. I have the same setup except using an AFS EFIS/EM and I get refreshes every 5 minutes. Bret, according to the AOPA course on Weather Nexrad, some units won't refresh for considerable periods if there is no activity close by. Normal refresh should be less than 6 minutes and less than 2 if there are cells nearby. ( just what it says ) My Garmin 396 is never more than 6 minutes old when there is any weather nearby and usually less.
