Thanks Bill,
You would think that XM would communicate these facts in their own
documentation so we would not have to rely on AOPA for the REAL facts.

Bret, according to the AOPA course on Weather Nexrad, some units won't
refresh for considerable periods if there is no activity close by.
Normal refresh should be less than 6 minutes and less than 2 if there
are cells nearby. ( just what it says ) My Garmin 396 is never more
than 6 minutes old when there is any weather nearby and usually less.

Garry,
I would verify that your XM antenna has a clear view to the sky and
that there are no problems with the wiring and connections. I have the
same setup except using an AFS EFIS/EM and I get refreshes every 5
minutes.

I have an XM "aviator lite" weather subscription, received by a WX
WORX receiver and interfaced to my Grand Rapids EFIS. It routinely
takes 12 minutes or so after I've fired up the avionics before I get a
radar picture. Then when flying on a long cross country I sometimes see
messages saying "radar data 21 minutes old". I thought XM sent out
refreshed packages no more than 5 minutes apart. My friend has a Garmin
496 and he says he acquires a radar picture within 2 minutes and never
sees anything older than 5 minutes.
What gives with my system? In reading the latest issue of Kitplane
magazine they say that Garmin has their own "built in" receiver, whereas
I have a separate stand-alone box. Could there be something inferior or
malfunctioning with my WX WORX receiver? Has anyone had a similar
experience?

Fellow RV fliers in the Central NJ, eastern PA area.
I friend of mine is looking for someone with an RV-6,7,8 that he can
get about 2 hours of time in. His RV-8 is finished and his insurance
company is requiring that he have at least 2 hours of time in one of
these aircraft before he flies his -8. The time does not require a
CFI. He's a multi-thousand hour pilot, but needs two more hours to
satisfy his insurance company. If anyone out there is interested in
doing some flying with him in the central NJ area please contact me off
list to get his name and number.
Many thanks,

Subject: | Riveting Top Forward Skin on RV-9 -- follow-up |
Gentlemen,
Thanks for all your welcome suggestions off and on-line on the riveting
sequence. No one suggested I begin riveting by starting a row of rivets
on one end of the skin into the top longeron and now I can see why! I
can set more rivets starting in the middle of the skin and working
outward in both directions.
One person suggested I rivet the firewall line of rivets last. I was
thinking of riveting the firewall in step with the rivets on the rear of
skin. Has anyone started by riveting the aft row of rivets on the two
center bays first? (I have a 7 x 8 access hole in each of the center
bays.)
(I'm leak checking my tanks so I have some time think about this
sequence...)
All the best,
Joe

Not sure if correct but this seems right! Couldn't find it back on the AOPA
site but found this from a report on the older Garmin units.
"There is a wide variety of weather info sent to the unit other than just
the NEXRAD radar images, and they all update at different time intervals.
The NEXRAD data is updated on a 5 minute cycle and storm cells are updated
every 1.25 minutes. On the other end of the spectrum, the Satellite Mosaic
updates every 15 minutes and the Marine Warnings update every 20 minutes. "

Subject: | Rod End Bearing Jam Nut - TORQUE |
For you Experts:
Installed the Rod End Bearings in the Rudder and Elevators today. -My loc
al A&P said to tighten the Jam Nut by "Hand Tightening" the Jam Nut as far
as it will go, then turn the nut between 1/4 and 1/2 turn more.
I "hand tightened" the Jam Nut (as the A&P said), but could not get it to t
ighten more than an additional 1/8 turn. -Because the Jam Nut is recessed
, it is impossible to get a wrench squarely on it = any further turning o
f the Nut stars to round the corners of the Nut. -Is this 1/8 turn adequa
te for the Jam Nut tightness, if not how do you turn the Nut (since it is r
ecessed) ??
What Torque Value is required for the Jam Nut, assuming a Torque Wrench can
get into the recessed area - do not see how this can be done.
ANOTHER QUESTION --Have a "click type" torque wrench that starts at 20 in
-lbs. -From previous posts, the FIRST 1/6 and the LAST 1/6 of the Wrench
Scale are inaccurate. -So how do you measure 'LOW VALUES" like for AN3 bo
lts that require 20 - -25 in/lbs plus Friction Torque of approx 5 in/lbs
= 25 to 30 in/lbs TOTAL TORQUE ???-
Appreciate your help,
Garey Wittich - -Santa Monica, CA - -
