The infrastructure is already in place for *worldwide* monitoring of
flight data. Many of us have adopted the APRS protocol for tracking our
aircraft:

http://www.vansairforce.com/community/showthread.php?t=27773
http://aprs.fi/?call=N399SB&mt=m&z=10&timerange=3600
This is a service in the ham radio two-meter band that already provides
GPS location, heading, speed, and altitude. The data is displayed on
internet servers that provide real-time monitoring anywhere at no cost.
There are some new APRS trackers coming soon that will allow much more
data to be transmitted. It will be up to someone to engineer the
interface between the aircraft parameters and the tracker, but with
engine monitors spitting out a serial stream, this shouldn't be
unsurmountable.

All=2C
We attended Bob's seminar and utilized his advice and Wiring plans for our
RV-8A. The redundance we built in really paid for the seminar many times ov
er=2C not to mention the reduce maintenance.
His seminar was so valuable=2C our EAA chapter has sponsored his seminars t
wics and look forward to doing it again.
If you are building or planning to build - I highly recommend attending Bob
's seminar.
I have no affilaton with Bob - just a very appreciative builder he helped.

It's the best $185 'college tuition' you'll spend. The camaraderie isn't ba

SAM
we have this for the rockets too. the reason most of us don't use it, is the test
requirements and the cost. for the rockets we use two xbee pro xsc radio modems.
one mounted to a ttl serial board this one talks to the on board pic which
does three axis g, baro altimeter , fire the ejection charges, and passes
the gps info the modem. cost to build 200.00$
base unit xbee pro xsc mounted in a usb board attached to the laptops. cost to
build 100.00$
add on cost for aircraft telemtry. about three hundred for the extra sensors and
pic capable of handling them. figure three axis gyro and accelerometer, static
and pitot pressure, oil pressure and temp, cht and egt
our concern with the rockets is where the hell did they go. when you slap a 20
lb rocket in ths butt with 500lbs. of thrust, it has a tendancy to go out of sight.
even if you can see it it will be a long walk and at three or more miles
away they can be hard to find.
