Garey, I think you should give Van's a call, they will give you the
best recommendation. Make sure you have the right amount of travel on
the elevator up and down. Die grinding seems like a good way to solve
the problem, however, something doesn't seem right here, please call
Van's. Good luck.

Subject: RV-List: Bolt Hole Clearance - Elevator Horn
REF: Regarding the 1/4 inch bolt holes in the Elevator Control
Horns, about which the Left & Right Elevator Horns rotate on the center
Hinge Bearing fastened to the center of the Horiz Stabilizer.
After drilling these 1/4 inch diameter holes (for the AN4 Bolt),
these holes are too close to the weld fillet that welds the torque tube
to the perpendicular part of the Horn. The weld fillets on my L & R
Horns go ALL the way around the Tube. Thus the AN4 Bolt HEAD and
corresponding Nut HEAD will come in contact with the "weld fillet"
BEFORE they are tightened.
After reading the "Archieves" for possible solutions and some
of my own thoughts it seems the options are (looking for the BEST
Option):
1) Die Grind the weld fillet in the area where the Bolt and Nut
heads will be, then spot prime with Zinc Chromate.
2) Grind the weld fillet where the Nut Head will be and then
use a reduced size Nut (MS21042-4) that has a smaller diameter than the
one supplied by Vans.
3) Use regular AN960 Washers and "contour them" to fit over the
weld fillet so Bolt Head and Nut fit snug against them. (Will need a
longer Bolt than supplied by Vans.)
4) Make a "thick" washer out of stainless steel (i.e. 1/8"
thick) and "contour it" to fit over the weld fillets; thus the Bolt and
Nut heads have a flat surface to tighten against. Again a longer Bolt
will be required. <----- Seems the BEST approach to me. Any subtle
issues involved ???
How did YOU handle this situation ???????
Appreciate your comments !!!
Thanks, Garey Wittich Santa Monica, CA

I am planning my instrument panel and having difficulty deciding between
the GNS 430 and the 530. Originally I was going to use the 530 simply
because of the screen size, resolution and color. With this in mind, I
cut the panel as well as the sub-panel to accommodate the 530 in the
radio stack. I have recently been wondering if I made the right call as
the 430 seems to have all of the same features in a smaller package,
less weight, and $3000 less expensive (smaller screen though).
Please give thoughts and/or comments to assist in this decision. I have
no doubt that both of these radios are fabulous products.

I made the decision to go with the 430W as opposed to the 530W
because I had the ability to get WX and traffic on my EFIS displays.
So, I did not see much need for the larger 530 screen.

I am replacing a GX60 and went with the closest functional device - the 420W.
I already have a MX20 display in my panel so I didn't need the 520's 'bigger'
screen.

I have flown both of these units extensively and yes they are virtually
identical in function (the 530 does have one nav page that is different
which I like). Obviously the 530's screen size is nice (bigger is
better, especially for old eyeballs). I am building a new RV-7 and have
already bought a 430W that will be the primary nav source. I will be
using the AFS-3500 for a nice big map display.

I use my 430W for VFR nav as well as instrument training. It has served
me well. It really is a judgement/preference call and a matter if you
have other
glass screens, what you want to do with it, etc.

I have a 530W and a 496. They compliment each other pretty well, but if I
were doing it again today, I'd probably use a 430W and a 696.

What sort of lubricant should be used on the rod end bearings and the
similar bearings used on the ailerons and elevator? I'm doing final
assembly on a 6A and most of them needed lube pretty bad - they've
been sitting for several years in the garage. Light oil works well,
but I suspect it will collect dust.

Ralph,
Any installation issues of note with that approach? I've got GX-60's in 2
planes and might have to go that route. I actually hadn't considered the
420W but I assume it's somewhat cheaper without the Nav and saves an extra
antenna. I've also got an SL-30 in both planes so don't really need a 2nd
Nav. Do you recall the height difference? Any wiring gotchas?

Randy, I'm getting ready to change the tubes in my Pitts. They're 28
years old, and have been through 4 or 5 sets of tires. The
recommendations (probably from those that sell tubes!) is to change
tubes with tires. I don't know anybody who does that. I've seen more
tubes damaged from improper installation than old age.

If you do decide to change tubes I recommend the michelin airstops -- http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/lgpages/michAviator2.php
. They are s bit more expensive -- but worth it from the standpoint
of not having to add air as often. I'm on my second se tof tires with
them on my Cherokee and I put them on my RV 7A.

Wade, I fly a 530 over a 430 in our Baron and really like the larger screen,
compass rose display, and having the ILS identifiers come up on the nav
page. Having said all that, it's not worth the dollar difference to me.
For our purposes I just put a 430 in my 7 with GRT EFIS and would recommend
a 430W/696 combination over a single 530 by far. About the same bucks and a
lot better graphics on the 696. Certainly want something WAAS enabled.
