Subject: | Solder Iron Size For Circuit Board |
Dear Listers,
I'm about ready to replace the internal time/date battery in my Garmin 296.
I would like to know what size soldering iron would work best for that
delicate job.
Those who have done this ... are there any special approaches to take such
as maybe connecting tiny wires to battery then solder the wires to the
circuit board? My new battery is from Digi-Key and has tiny solder prongs
fused to it.
Should the 296 be updated before I replace the battery? I've never updated
since since new, that's been 3 years now.
Thanks,
Jerry

I had two soldering irons and I just used the one with the smaller tip.
With the battery that you have you do need to do any thing to it. No
need to update before the battery swap. Just make sure you are software
is update after you finish, not your databases but your software. Follow
the directions on my website (link below) and look at the pictures on my
picasa web album.

Just a quick PIREP on my Duckworks Dual HID light system.
We installed two Duckworth 35 Watt HID lights and a Wig/Wag controller
to the leading edges of our -10. In the short time we have been flying I
have had A LOT of people (strangers) come up to me and tell me how
bright & noticeable they in full daylight. I remember seeing my
neighbor's Pilatus swoop in to our filed with his HID's a blazing and I
had to have them. Also of note several people thought my plane was much
larger because of the spread of the lights (?). For the record no wing
extension mods!.
Since their introduction I believe there are less expensive choices
available but regardless I am extremely happy with the firepower of the
dual HID's and think it's one of the least expensive safety options you
can add to their build. Seeing is the key to avoiding.
Robin
Note: Lights are not on, that is just the suns reflection.

When I was Chief CFI of a flying school that had in excess of 30 aircraft
we ALWAYS used retreads when feasible. They would last longer by far than
the original treads. Some went as far as to get more plys so the carcass
would last for more re-treads. If I recall correctly it seems like the
Cessna 210 was a problem with retreads due to extremely tight wheel wells
(older models with all of the gear doors). This was in the 70's but get same
reports from CFI's during the Flight Instructor Refresher Clinics I teach.
Also not really same subject, but insure the filament of your landing and
taxi lights are vertical, they will last a lot longer also.
