Thanks Bobby,
Your online procedure and pictures will be a very sufficient source for
replacing the 296 GPS internal battery. Thank you for developing this for
the RV-list. You just saved me enough to put about 75 gallons of LL through
the 4.
Regards,
Jerry

I had two soldering irons and I just used the one with the smaller tip.
With the battery that you have you do need to do any thing to it. No need to
update before the battery swap. Just make sure you are software is update
after you finish, not your databases but your software. Follow the
directions on my website (link below) and look at the pictures on my picasa
web album.

I need a new tailwheel for my 6. It is out of round and starting to make noise.
Any new products out there, or should i replace it with old standby.
thanks

There is indeed a REALLY nice new tailwheel coming out from Dayton Murdock
(the guy who makes all the nice throttle quadrants). We should have them
shortly to sell. They are nicer, and lighter (have machined lighting holes
in them) and overall probably better than the stock Van's tailwhee. I'll
have pics and detailed info shortly, just none to sell right at the moment.
Cheers,
Stein

Subject: | Nose wheel pant vertical oscillation |
Listers--Our nose wheel pant is oscillating vertically at all speeds above slow
taxi.??The oscillation?is reduced (but not eliminated) with aft stick pressure
but of course you need airspeed to make that work.? Our nose gear pant is balanced
fore and aft.? Vans suggested checking the nose gear tire for roundness,
which we will do.? We will also check for tire balance, but are not sure how
to affix a weight if needed.? We've tried different tire pressures--no change.?
We have the new style nose gear fork and our bearing torque is per specs.?
Anyone else have this problem, and if so how did you solve it?? We have the new
style nose gear fork and our axle bolt/bearing torque is per specs.? Thanks.

Out of round is obvious if you place a stick or pen close to
the tire and observe the separation as the tire slowly rotates.
Balance using adhesive backed weights you can get from
places like motorcycle shops

Subject: | Re: Nose wheel pant vertical oscillation |
LeRoy,
With the nose wheel jacked up off the ground will the wheel move freely
by hand? If you try to spin by hand it does it resist spinning more than
one complete rotation?
The axel hardware supplied with my 1996 Kit did not have a bearing
spacer and no bearing spacer was indicated on the plans.
I noticed I had the same problem that you describe. I double checked the
install and torque settings. All were to spec. It seemed to me that
using the Van's torque spec. made the nose wheel far too tight in it's
bearings (excessive preload)
I backed off the torque setting only slightly and found that the reduced
torque caused the axle bearings and spacers to spin leaving galling
damage to the fork.
Fortunately the new style nose gear fork had just arrived about then. I
gave the matter considerable thought and researched a bit.
I ended up making a chrome molly tubing spacer to fit between the
bearings that allowed the wheel to turn with only a slight bit of
preload. The wheel hop and shimmy went away and so far all is well. I do
not have many hours on the current set up so I cannot promise or suggest
that others should do as I have done based on hours of durability.
The tubing I used was one 1/16th" thick wall 1 3/8" outside diameter.
The length of the spacer to accomplish the preload was determined at
the time of custom fit and installation.
With the preload now predetermined mechanically, the axle bolt can be
tightened somewhat more than the Van's spec without adversely effecting
bearing preload.
