Subject: | EAA tech advisor |
Hello RVers!
I've been slaving away in my own little bubble long enough - it's
time for another set of eyes to look at my wings before I go any
further! Does anyone know of an EAA technical counselor/advisor or
someone with similar credentials that operates out of the Hayward CA
(HWD) airport? There are several in NorCal listed on the EAA website
but I don't see anyone specifically in HWD and I don' t want to
impose. I had hoped to connect with the Livermore EAA chapter, but I
work Thursday nights and cannot attend their meetings... Thanks so
much for your recommendations.
Regards - Ford

Dear Listers,
I've got two questions regarding the bolt for the rear spar on the RV-8.
How come the rear spar is attached with a castle nut and cotter pin instead of
an aeronut?
The plans call for "three" washers, but where does the third one go?
What torque is appropriate for this bolt? The castle nut implies it shouldn't
be tight.
Thanks!

Ford-
Send me you contact info by direct email and I will forward it to my good
buddy, Gordon Jones. I think that many will agree that he is the best EAA
tech advisor we have at LVK, and he's the guy you want.

The castle nut does not imply loose, it implies rotation. The rear spar is
considered a pinned joint. With a single bolt there is the possibility of
rotation, no matter how slight - hence the castle nut. Torque it to the
range for the bolt size. If it won't align within the range try another nut
or back it down to align the cotter pin. The extra washer is probably to
align the castellations with the hole.

Greg Young

And, of course, they make "thin" washers that are 1/2 thickness that you
can add to get the holes aligned for the cotter pin...
