Subject: | Dynon D10A/EDC in and RV-9A - weird behaviour |
Has anyone else suffered or resolved the following issue with a Dynon
D10A EFIS with the optional EDC installed in their RV?
I get "signal too weak to calibrate" messages or something to that
effect, indicating that the voltage from the EDC is too low. I'm sure
I'm going to have to replace the wiring, but wanted to check what others
had done. I believe my error was in not using shielded wire, but maybe
there's a voltage drop on such a long wire run. For those who have an
install that works, what wire did you use? I have the EDC mounted on
the bulkhead one full space forward of the horizontal stabilizer. I DO
see constantly updating numbers, as I'm supposed to, when I go into the
EDC calibration program.
The reason I'm asking this on this list, rather than with Dynon, is that
I'm looking for aircraft specific info, since it's quite a long wire
run.
Any other ideas or experience would be appreciated. Thanks,
Ian Brown

Ian,
Can't help with your specific problem but I can tell you that I am using
CAT5 network cable (non-shielded) for the Dynon magnetometer under the
tail of my RV-6. My installation has worked perfectly for several years.
Shielded cable is not necessary for proper operation of the mag. You
might take a good look at the connectors in your harness to make sure
there isn't a high-resistance fault in a crimp or solder connection.

Hi Ian;
I've got the D10A/EDC in an RV9 and had no problems, but I used
shielded wire as I have access to plenty of it. I would recommend that
you call Dynon's tech support. They are excellent and their service is
second to none.
Your installation is not at all uncommon and they would be able to
provide you with any aircraft specific information that you require. If
you are determined to try to do this with help from a list then I would
recommend the Aero-Electric list as a much more specific list for this
sort of problem.
I once fried my D10 doing something really stupid that I should have
known better (always use a grounded tip soldering iron) and when I
called Dynon and told them what I did, they said no problem. I had to
pay 1-way shipping and they fixed it free and paid the return shipping.
It was out of my plane for little more than a week. That's good service.
