Subject: | Rocket Steering Link |
Dear Listers,
I have about 100 hours on my RV-8. I just pulled my Rocket Steering
Link out of the 'un-used parts' pile, and put it on. So far I like the
feel very much, nice and tight, especially noticed a big improvement
in stability during the landing roll out.
Does the group have any data or experience with the link as far as
safety and reliability?
Thanks in advance,
Jim Gray

After monkeying with my #1 cylinder blockoff plate (too many times), I ended up
with a removeable plate about 3/4" tall on the outboard side gradually sloping
to about 1-1/2" on the inboard side.
The cruise CHTs are within 10 degrees from highest to lowest and within 5 degrees
of the average and run between 330 and 370. FWIW, cruise EGT's are within
20 degrees from highest to lowest and within 10 degrees of average and run between
1150 and 1250.
Climbing and descending get a little out of kilter - but stay within limits.
So everyone knows the environment....:
RV6A with larger main tires and 5x5 nosewheel tire and fork (grass strip)
AerosportPower IO360B1F6 (180hp)
9.2:1 pistons
AFP injection (updraft)
LASAR ignition (with CHT sender in alternate location to facilitate diagnostics)
Vetterman dual crossover heater-mufflers
SamJames Cowl and plenum (newer intake box)
AFS3400EM providing engine diagnostic data
On to more test flying,
Ralph

Charlie,
Perhaps you are confused because of the service bulletin (SB 05-1-1) on this intersection? See http://vansaircraft.com/pdf/sb05-1-1.pdf for the full details! If your plans are as old as mine, then they will not be correct - you'll have to refer to the document cited above.
I only remembered because the FAA is scheduled to come and do my final inspection
this week and I added all of the service bulletins to the log book so I could
show compliance. The FAA seems to like that level of detail!

Subject: RV-List: RV-7 F-732B/F drawing inconsistency question
After several months of minimal building activity, & a year or more
since building the fuselage, I'm gearing up to install the tipup rear
window & aft top skin.
I haven't dimpled the skin yet, so I pulled out the small version of
drawing 40 to see how to dimple/countersink the area where the skin sits
on the F706 bulkhead & F732A brace. Detail G, and other drawings on the
page, show an angle brace, F732B. The actual piece I made a year or more
ago is a piece of flat 1/8" aluminum. After digging through the
instructions for a half-hour or so trying to find the directions for
building the part, I pulled out the full size drawing to see details a
bit better. Hmmm... *That* drawing detail G shows a flat piece of metal,
F732H. The two drawings have the same rev# & date.
I'm hoping that the 'H' means I'm good to go, but has anyone talked to
Van's about this?
Thanks,
Charlie

Hi Jim=2C
I have over 600 hours on my Rocket Steering Link and like it very much. I
like the tight link between rudder and tailwheel. I have had no problems w
ith mine.

Ahhh, yes, that's the ticket. The frustrating thing is that the 'old'
configuration is shown on the small drawing & the 'new' configuration is
shown on the large drawing, but both have exactly the same dates, file
names, etc in the data block.
Thanks,
Charlie

In the years I've been building (and not flying) my ancient Magellan became
so obsolete that I can't buy database cartridges for it any more. I
stupidly passed up the chance to but a Lowrance 600c cheap. For several
weeks Spruce and a few other places were selling them for $300. They're
back up to nearly $500 everywhere now. The Bendix AV8OR looks good, but
it's $619 at Spruce - right at my pain threshold.
Perhaps one of you folks who just upgraded to the latest Garmin xxx for big
bucks would like to recover a bit by selling your old GPS?

Here's what I heard back from Van's today regarding the issue including the updated
picture:
> Simply rivet on a .040" extension (like the -4 & -6 builders had to) as shown
in the attached picture. You can bend it to fit any contour or overlap the flap
intersection fairing as you see fit. Use pop or solid flush rivets to attach.
Um, good thing its underneath... ;-)
