Subject: | BendixKing GPS - AV80R |
The AV80R GPS apparently has been on the market for about one year.
Now BendixKing came out, first (?) at Oshkosh this year, with a BIG screen
model (AV80R ACE with all of the big $$ items.
My questions: has anybody on the list used or has knowledge with the
smaller (AV80R) model. I am somewhat concerned with the touch screen
feature in turbulence. Apparently this is the only (??) aviation GPS with
the touch screen feature.
SO, let=92s hear from YOUR input.
Thanks, Lothar RV-6A, 853 hrs.

I got one of those systems that used a PDA (with touch screen) for the
moving map. I sent it back for that exact reason. It was worthless in anything
but still air. Constantly hitting the wrong buttons while bouncing. If you
have "fat" fingers it wasn't even that good in still air. I prefer the
dedicated buttons on my Garmin(s) and particularly the dedicated software.
My Garmin car GPS with touch screen can even be difficult while moving but
at least I have the option (and used it) to pull over.

I haven't flown with my AV8OR in turbulence at all but there is a stylus built
into the back of the GPS that can be used if the accuracy of your finger is not
adaquate.
I am fairly happy with my AV8OR. The first batch had cheap switches for power
and menu buttons but Honeywell replaced the units under warranty.

After about 15hrs on the RV-8 ,the breaker blew.
It seems I will need a larger breaker. What size are

No experience with this unit, but had some experience with a touch
screen EFB in my prior life. You are right to be concerned. Constant
problems with screen getting touched when you did not want it
touched. Stowing the unit in it's cabinet would often accidentally
touch the screen. Then when you pulled it out, you would be on
another screen and often had a hard time finding your way back to the
desired screen. We switched to a unit that used a stylus. That is not
a perfect solution either, but at least the screen stays where you
want it. Still can be a bit tough in turbulence. I am using a unit
that uses a stylus in my RV-10 now and am pretty happy with it.

Subject: | Wind noise from vents |
Hello everyone,
I've been flying a Diamond Star (DA40) lately, and it has the same
eyeball-vents-on-the-panel that my RV-7A has. When flying in the DA40 with
the vents open, I notice that my ANR headset softens the engine noise, but
the noise of the air coming out of the eyeball vents is really loud (loud
enough that I really need to crank the audio to hear comms). If the vents
are closed the noise is reduced dramatically.
For those of you flying, do you notice this same thing in your RV? Has
anyone done anything to combat this?
I've done all my training in newer Cessna 172s and 182s, where their outside
air vents hardly make any noise, even full open.

You can increase the squelch. I notice it kind of depends where my vents are pointed
at (RV6). The more directly they are pointing at me the more I need to increase
the squelch. I have heard that others have put steel wool behind the vent
in the SCAT tubing. Playing with the squelch works for me most of the time.
I use the in your ear head set most of the time but if my better half is not
with me I sometimes use her ZULU.
Hope it helps.

I've got 80 hrs on my RV7A - and I've come to Hate my cowl.
I followed the plans and put hinge fasteners on the firewall and where the
top/bottom clam halfs meet. The firewall hinges are fine. But the top/bottom
clam halves hinges just aren't cutting the mustard. Getting the clam halfs
to mate seems to require a large unsightly seam - so the top/bottom hinge
teeth can move in/out as necessary to insert the pin. The hinge teeth seem
to bend off-center at the slightest bump. When I try to bend them back into
line, the hinge material fatigues. I'm also worried that the hinges pins
will vibrate and chafe the paint if I get the seam "tight" enough to look
good. (Thank goodness I'm still waiting on the paint shop and can change the
design).
Anyone out there redesigned the top/bottom clam half fastening design with
different fasteners - and happy with the result? (Pictures would be helpful)
Thanks,
"Jerry"
