RV-List: nyloseal fittings
From: thomas sargent <sarg314@gmail.com>
I am about to hook up my static line and pitot tube to the various
instruments. I am using nyloseal fittings. Is it advisable to use anything
on the nyloseal threads to make them air tight? That oil-teflon paste caled
Bakerseal perhaps or maybe plumber's teflon tape?
My concern is that I'm using a number of T's and you generally have to clock
those to satisfy tube routing issues rather than screwing them in to optimal
tightness (whatever that is). Something extra on the threads might reduce
the chance that I get a leaky fit even if the T isn't screwed in as far as
it could go.
I did not use any sealer on the threads. However
when connecting the lines I did not
push the nylon tube in far enough and the connection loosened.
Make sure the tube extends through the small nylon ring
inside the nylon nut.
Also you may want to use the 259-N insert.

List,
On several occasions I visited a website that
featured a homemade metal plenum that had a hinge down the middle of the
case to allow access to the cylinders etc. Can someone point me in the
right direction?
Thanks,
Robin

Yes, I am using the inserts. I think they increase the reliability
greatly. They also make it nearly impossible for the tube to back out.
But in my D10-A, anyway, the nyloseal fittings I screwed in just didn't seem
very tight. They seem to fit better in the other instruments.

I have a Dynon D10-A and I bought the external compass module (wish I'd
selected the "internal" option because it was a lot of work to install).
Will a DAR require that I also have a whiskey compass?
Should I have a whiskey compass anyway just for redundancy?

In talking to other builders -- some DARs do and some don't. I put a
relatively inexpensive Whiskey compass in mine --a pegasus (http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/inpages/sirs_compass.php
).
It seems to work just fine.
good luck

Go to Walmart and get a $1.99 stick on compass in the kid's craft's

Nowhere does it say permanately mounted or expensive.

That is the part that you will have ot work out with the DAR. I agree with
you in that I consider a Dynon a magnetic directional indicator but there
are otheres that don't agree within the FAA and the DARs. As has been stat
ed elsewhere it is the electrical part that gets in the way. Personally I
got the backup battery option on my Dynon and that was the end of the discu
ssion. But I also got a SIRS compass and installed it just in case everyth
ing really went to sh**.

Subject: RV-List: need whiskey compass ?
From: sarg314@gmail.com
I have a Dynon D10-A and I bought the external compass module (wish I'd sel
ected the "internal" option because it was a lot of work to install).
Will a DAR require that I also have a whiskey compass?
Should I have a whiskey compass anyway just for redundancy?

Backups to worthless whiskey compass in no particular order
1) GPS track
2) Backup GPS track
3) Directional gyro
4) Sun and roads
5) Sectional
6) Sheer blind luck at finding an airport (serendipity?)
7) ATC vectors

When my RV was signed off by the DAR it didn't have a compass (GRT system).
It did have a blank compass correction card. The DAR said he would let it
go, but if the airplane was going to be used for Part 135 ops it would need
a compass. So if I ever use my RV for Part 135 operations I guess I will go
to Walmart and get a compass.

That is the part that you will have ot work out with the DAR. I agree
with you in that I consider a Dynon a magnetic directional indicator but
there are otheres that don't agree within the FAA and the DARs. As has been
stated elsewhere it is the electrical part that gets in the way. Personally
I got the backup battery option on my Dynon and that was the end of the
discussion. But I also got a SIRS compass and installed it just in case
everything really went to sh**.

What am I missing? Where in 91.205 is a backup whiskey compass required.?
Paragraph (b) (3) requires a magnetic direction indicator. Can't this be an
electronic magnetic direction indicator?
Regards,
George

Tom,
If all you want to do is VFR then the dynon is fine. but if you want to
fly IFR then you will need to have a back-up whiskey compass. Reason?? In
the operating limitations that will be issued at the time of certification
one of the paragraphs will read: "Unless appropriately equipped in
accordance with 91.205 for night and/or IFR flight, aircraft is restricted
to day VFR." The first paragraph in both 91.205 (c) and (d) states that the
instruments in paragraph (b) are required.
I can get a lot more in depth about this if you would like but I think
the above is enough for what you want.

Subject: | Oil pressure variation |
I am puzzled by this: my RV6A with a Lyc O-320 uses no oil between
changes, isn't leaking oil, and oil temps are completely normal.
On the way back from OSH I noticed the oil pressure (as measured on an
International Electronics digital OPT-1 meter) dropping to 20PSI - it
normally runs 72-74 PSI. I was running at 2300 RPM so I increased engine
RPM to 2500 and the oil pressure immediately climbed back to normal and
stayed there for (perhaps) an hour and the did it again. Increase in RPM
again put the oil pressure into normal range and it stayed there for the
rest of the flight.
My thought it that the sensor may be at fault, but at $123 to replace it
I want to eliminate everything else I can think of before buying a
replacement.
What is your guess, ideas, suggestions, hints, etc. Any input would be
appreciated.

John,
Sounds like something going on with the oil pressure relief valve to me.
I'd take it out, look it over real good and clean it well. Some little
something my have gotten stuck on the steel ball.
Just something to try.
Mark

Hi John,
If you have an oil filter remove it and open it up. Inspect it carefully
for metal partials. Also remove the screen and inspect it.
As suggested by Mark Burns remove inspect and replace the oil pressure
regulator valve. Send an oil sample to a lab to get a best guess as to
internal wear and tear.
Hopefully you will not find engine pieces with part numbers on
them.{[;-)
Be cautious when trouble shooting the oiling system behavior you
describe. What you describe sounds very much like you could possibly be
getting a warning for a lubrication system failure that at the very
least could be expen$ive.
I'm not trying to scare you. It may well be a simple sending unit
failure mode or some such simple fixable item. I have never liked to
hear engine stoppage stories. I have hear a few too many of late.
The best of luck to you,
Jim in Kelowna
