Subject: | Just A Few Days Left; Still Trailing Last Year... |
Dear Listers,
There are just a few more days left of this year's List Fund Raiser! Response
has been very good, but still well behind last year. If you've been waiting until
the last minute to make your contribution and maybe even pick up a great
gift, now might be good time to show your support!
Please remember that there isn't any sort of commercial advertising on the Lists
and the *only* means of keeping these Lists running is through your Contributions
during this Fund Raiser.
Please make a Contribution today!
http://www.matronics.com/contribution
Thank you!

For those of you who wonder why the list is so long, and whether you can
do anything to help reduce it, consider deleting most or all of the text
of the message you are replying to. It would really help not to have to
read someone else's privacy statement six times. Ideally, just keep the
line or two of text relevant to what you are replying to.
Respectfully,
Ian Brown, RV-9A, Bromont, Quebec

I don't have the strip, either. I do have those corner breaks, though.
Both were done in cold weather. Drat! I'd thought about doing the strip to
cover the corners; but, why bother? It flys just as well without it. :-)

Subject: | Tip Up Canopy Question |
No being a fan (nor good at it) of fiberglass work, I made a 3" wide strip
of 0.032 aluminum and use the same rivets holding the canopy to the frame to
hold it attached. It not only looks better (Covers my somewhat less than
cosmetic perfect cutting of the canopy apart), is light, and keeps the rain
out. It has worked fine for over 10 years and 500 hrs.

My RV-7 tipup does not have a strip of anything along the back side. Looks
great except for the bottom corner that vibrated too much when I ran engine
& taxied too much with the canopy up on the handle stop for ventilation. I
assume the tip of that corner was occasionally hitting the edge of the roll
bar or something when the engine vibes or bumps were just right. Anyway,
after 300 hours or so, I noticed a 3" piece missing and found it on the
taxiway. Glued it back in place and looks OK except for the glue-line.
I'll be putting some sort of a aluminum, fiberglass or vinyl all across the
back now. I've also put in some little guide pieces to keep the canopy
aligned when closing so it cannot hit anything when almost closed.
Still learning.....

I was wondering how many of the tip up guys have bothered to make a
fiberglass cover all the way across the back of the canopy?
Next up I am going to countersink the plexi and upsize the holes to take the
#6 screws I was planning to use as the back edge of the canopy. I hope it
will be OK to drill the plexi......

Bob...
The future is wireless! If you can wait...
I started with manual trim in my -8 and switched to electric. Simpler installation
and it works great in John's -8. I put a govenor (Matronics) in to slow the
servo speed to make fine adjustments in cruise possible.

I have manual trim and am not flying yet. But one thing it kinda hoses up is wiring
runs. One of the holes on the left side of the tunnel in my RV-7a is dedicated
to a big manual trim cable (and also an ELT wiring run. ) I don't have much
electrical stuff in the plane but the hole right side of the tunnel is full
up with two strobe cables, a strobe power cable, a nav light cable, and an ELT
instrument panel light cable. I could sure use some more room back there.
and I havne't even run any antenna cables yet.

I flew for 2 years without a 'targa' strip but decided to install one after
a corner break. I just masked off an area, scuffed up the Plexiglas, and
put down a few layers of fiberglass, put in a flox rear fillet underneath,
finish with micro, paint. Probably wasn't too much more work than Ed's
aluminum strip. Probably fits just a little closer and smoother.
I like it. Cuts down on wind noise, covers the scratches on the rear
roll-over bar from taxiing, covers the crappy looking silicone I used under
the Plexiglas to try to seal the canopy when I was first building, covers
some of the 'oops' holes I had in the roll over bar. (that thing was kind
of hard to fit together right as I recall.... ) Overall it was a good
choice for me, mostly for aesthetic reasons.

Subject: | Fuel tanks in Germany |
Ok so I built a new set of RV4 tanks for a client in Germany. We had a
bit of a miscommunication and I sent him a set for a new model
(prepunched skins) wing and his is an early model so he cant use them. I
ended up building a new set for him but still need to find a home for
the first set. It is cost prohibitive to ship them this direction for
some reason so I am looking for someone who can use them on that side of
the globe. They are brand new, set up with aerobatic mods on the left
side and have Stewart Warner senders installed. I would like to get
$1000.00 for them....this is less than half of the retail value. I will
entertain any offers of cash or trade (I am currently building an RV9A)
Or, If anybody out there has any super deals on shipping them back here,
(California) I would sure like to hear about it. I have been told that
the military boys get to ship really cheap :)
Cheers..

Subject: RV-List: Epic Riveting Day
Today was an epic day in my 13 year build. I pounded about 30 rivets
and the construction log says that hasn't happened since 2002. The bad
news came later when I discovered I hadn't dimpled the next row of
holes to their final size of screw so I had to drill everything out
again. Tomorrow I start even further behind as I will now shim it to
perfection at the bottom corners. This isn't starting off too good...

Folks,
I have a Gretz Heated Pitot Tube and mount. Unfortunately the pitot tube
fitting does not extend far enough to be able to attach the line to the tube
once the tube is in the mount. I'd like to hear from anyone that has found
the solution to this problem so I don't have to "reinvent the wheel".
