checked on dresser recaps and ordered couple 500X5's. Was thinking
about instalation and got to wond3ring if could just jack up each side
and remove axel nut, then take wheels apart without dismatling the
brakes and change tires that way. Picturing this in my mind seems
doable, wondering if anyone or maybe several have done it this way??

Charlie, that would be very difficult in my opinion. Removing the brake fro
m each side only causes you to take out 2 bolts and nuts, leave the brake h
anging by the brake line. Trying to split the rim without having it on a be
nch would be tough.

Hi Tom-
I used intumescent caulk. It is a fire barrier that actually swells to
seal gaps as insulation or other materials burn away. Very expensive if
bought from an aviation supply house, quite cheap from the local Lowe's.

After 12+ years of taking the wheel all the way off=2C I would love this t
o work. I have never had a tire separate easily from the rim and have alwa
ys needed extra pressure to separate the tire from the rim. On my airplane
=2C the bead is always stuck to the wheel.
Cutting the safety wire=2C removing two bolts=2C the brakes come off. Not
a big deal or much of a time saver.

You could surely do it that way, but why? Two bolts and the brakes are
now a non-issue. Take the tire assembly to your bench ..... it'll be
far easier, and you stand a much smaller opportunity to screw something
up. I find it a PITA trying to unbolt the wheel halves on the bench
.... much less down on my hands and knees under the airplane.

Gary, after 12+ years you should have learned to powder the rims/tire
bead before assembly! <GR> My tires come loose real easy. I use lots
of talc ..... inside the tire, on the tube, on the wheel halves ....
just blow the excess out of the tire to prevent a heavy spot. But you
don't want to blow it clean, if you get my drift! Which brought to mind
"Talc is cheap .... I want results!!" Sorry, couldn't resist!

And I on the other hand, have never had a problem with stuck beads. Why? I
don't know, but this is my procedure. I take the wheel and tire (after
removing the valve stem core), place outer side down on a piece of plywood
and walk around the tire just outside of the wheel. In less than a minute
the bead will have worked down by alternating from one side to the other.
>From there it's common sense.
I just purchased a 1941 Meyers OTW which had been in storage for 38 years.
I used the same procedure for the tire/tube replacement; however, it took
twice as long --- two minutes. The tires are big too, 8.50 - 10's, six
plies.
