OR: Should I machine countersink the lower skin and longeron (1 step). (Leaves undesireable thin sidewall bearing area on skin) Thanks, Jim Clark ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 04:24:37 PM PST US From: Charles Kuss Subject: Re: RV-List: Re: RV-8A Ideal ELT Location & Antenna Robin, I would suggest that you NOT follow Matt's installation of the ELT, as it does not meet the recommendations of the FAA for ELT mounting. The FAA recommends mounting the ELT where: #1 A 100 pound weight can be set on the area of the ELT, without any flexing of the mount. #2 The mount can support a 300 pound load without breaking. These recommendations are to prevent failure of the mount during a crash AND to prevent the ELT from triggering during a hard landing, due to a flimsy mount. The battery/bell-crank cover is flimsy, even with a doubler. A better location would be on the floor [in front of, under or behind the battery/bell-crank cover]. Place the bracket between the lower longeron and the fore/aft belly rib. This will give you the required strength. I can supply photos off list if desired. Got a "lighted pick-up" from Home Depot, and some blue RTV from Auto Zone. Worked like a charm, took me less than 2 minutes to fish it out, clip it back into place, and put on a dab of RTV to make extra sure it stays where it belongs. Thank you!
