Mine now seem to show nearly full all the time. The left tank had only 7 gallons in it this morning, and it is still only slightly off it's full position. I guess I have no choice but to try and re-calibrate. -- Tom Sargent ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 09:33:50 AM PST US From: Matt Dralle Subject: Re: RV-List: Re: capacitive fuel probes (was: engine loping) Well, at 95+ hours TTSN now, and after the third calibration attempt at about 40 hours, the Princeton Probes have actually been working well. They read "full" until I get to about 15 gallons remaining due to the slope of the tank, but then from 15-0 they've read pretty well. That all being said, about a week ago the right tank started reading 17-18 when full. I noticed this on a couple of flights/fillups. Then, after the last fillup it was reading 21 again as it should. So, I was all ready to go through the calibration again on the right tank, but now, it doesn't seem to need it. Now, one point of interest. I normally always fill up at my local airport. About a week ago - and just before I noticed the problem - I filled up at a remote airport. When I went to start the engine, I had a heck of a time keeping it running at first. I wondered if there was some water in the fuel I had just pumped. I had started pumping on the right tank which was the same tank that had the sender issue. I used a fuel checker on the drain, but didn't see any water, but it could have been already gone by then. Anyway, the point is, I'm suspecting that perhaps I got a little bit of water in the tank and that this caused the wonky sender output for a while. - Matt Dralle RV-8 #82880 N998RV http://www.mattsrv8.com - Matt's RV-8 Construction Log http://www.youtube.com/MattsRV8 - Matt's RV-8 HDTV YouTube Channel Status: 95+ Hours TTSN - Enjoying Every Minute... (My apologies if everybody already knows this!) My 6A only has about 7 hours on it. It had a pretty bad shimmy only upon landing after it slowed down a lot. I never determined if it was in the main gear or the nose gear. I tried reducing the nose wheel pressure as some one advised me, but that didn't work. Joe at Van's told me their 8A had a similar problem. It was fixed by reducing the main wheel pressure to 25 - 28 psi and the nose gear to 30 - 35. I originally had about 35psi all around. I tried his suggestion and have had no shimmy on the last 2 landings. An easy fix. -- Tom Sargent ________________________________ Message 4 _____________________________________ Time: 01:37:14 PM PST US From: Brian Alley Subject: Re: RV-List: Re: capacitive fuel probes (was: engine loping) Tom, water and other contaminates can foul the probes and cause false readings. Have you found any water when sumping your tanks? A sliver of aluminum or any thing that conducts can change the capacitance of the probe and this does cause the reading To be nearly full regardless of the fuel Quality in the tank. After having spent $220 on my first set o f LED=92s for the -10 (which still required modifications http://painttheweb.com/painttheweb/rv-10/Lights_LEDHID.aspx ) I decided to fabricate some Red/Green Nav lights out of Auto parts. The lights were purchased on eBay for well under $10.00 each. The sockets were maybe $3.00 each and the Red Green Mirrored plexi was about $8.00 delivered. I think they turned out great. They are definitely brighter than my -10 Nav lights and many people comment on how noticeable my -10 nav lights are on the ground and in flight. Here are a few photos of the Nav lights installed. Note these are older Van s wing tips so we had to cut away the corners and replace them with aero tips ..
