(My apolo gies if everybody already knows this!) My 6A only has about 7 hours on it.- It had a pretty bad shimmy only upon landing after it slowed down a lot.- I never determined if it was in the main gear or the nose gear.- I tried reducing the nose wheel pressure as some one advised me, but that didn't work.- Joe at Van's told me their 8 A had a similar problem.- It was fixed by reducing the main wheel pressur e to 25 - 28 psi and the nose gear to 30 - 35.- I originally had about 35 psi all around.- I tried his suggestion and have had no shimmy on the las t 2- landings.- An easy fix.- -- Tom Sargent =0A=0A=0A ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 01:27:25 PM PST US From: Linn Walters Subject: Re: RV-List: wheel shimmy fixed From my Grumman experience (castering nosewheel) the drag on the nose fork produced by the belleville washers directly affects the shimmy (side to side movement like a bad shopping cart) but tire pressure didn't seem to make much difference. 6 ply tires have a much stiffer sidewall and help some, but they're heavier. There are as many ways to stack the belleville washers as there are ways to corrosion proof. The best stack looks like |))((| ...... flat washers are '|' and bellevilles are '( and )'. The drag is measured with a spring scale at the axle, and can be anywhere from 18 - 25 pounds, with the best numbers on the high end. Nose gear shimmy will wear out a nose tire much faster than the mains. I just completed a 24 hour round trip to Lake Tahoe where I flew my -10 with 3 large people, 2 sets of golf clubs & luggage at 11,500/12,500=92 into KTVL. The plane flew great with tail winds that gave me 184-187 knots GS in extreme comfort. Taking off from KTVL the DA was 8,300=92 and the plane still climbed at 1,000-1,100 feet/minute and easily handled the challenges of mountain flying. Keep building! Here is a follow up note I sent to a fellow builder after he asked me off line about some leads on where I purchased my bulbs. The best way to search eBay (for me) was to look up =93Red LED Bulb=94 or =93Green LED Bulb=94 the n once I found a Red or Green one I liked including the connection style that interested me (spring loaded twist vs. push in/pull out) then I looked up the seller =93see other items=94 link and searched =93Green LED=94 or =93Re d LED=94 specifically sold by that vendor to make sure they offered both color bulbs. It=92s really easy. I found a dozen sellers in the matter of a 20 minute eBay search that fit the bill. More than half the sellers that offer the bulbs I liked also sold a matching Green or Red units. The top two look like the bulbs I used, the bottom four (links) look like bulbs I considered that have EVEN MORE colored LED=92s if you want to go th at route. Some of the extreme cases have 54 colored LED=92s per bulb. WOW, can you say Nav Landing Lights? Don=92t stop there, do your own search. Finally I am NOT depending on the colored mirror Plexi to impart the Red/Green color on to white LED=92s, they just enhance the effect and look =93Nav=94 like even when sitting in the hangar. The lights really look good, I've looked in the archive but can't find any previous notes regarding the lights you used. A ebay search came up with 200,000 hits, can you give us some light descriptions or part numbers to help a brother builder out? I see on ebay white and red LED lights but no Green. Do you relie on the green and red mirrored plexi for the colour or are green bulbs available? Can you point us in the right direction for the coloured plexi? Is the second bulb in your installation a strobe? If so are these roll your own as well? Thanks i n advance, Terry. ----- Original Message ----- *From:* Robin Marks *To:* rv10-list@matronics.com ; rv-list@matronics.com *Sent:* Saturday, September 11, 2010 2:03 AM *Subject:* RV-List: LED Nav Lights For some time I have mentioned the =93discount=94 way I was going about add ing LED Nav lights to my RV-8A build. After having spent $220 on my first set o f LED=92s for the -10 (which still required modifications http://painttheweb.com/painttheweb/rv-10/Lights_LEDHID.aspx ) I decided to fabricate some Red/Green Nav lights out of Auto parts. The lights were purchased on eBay for well under $10.00 each. The sockets were maybe $3.00 each and the Red Green Mirrored plexi was about $8.00 delivered. I think they turned out great. They are definitely brighter than my -10 Nav lights and many people comment on how noticeable my -10 nav lights are on the ground and in flight. Here are a few photos of the Nav lights installed. Note these are older Van s wing tips so we had to cut away the corners and replace them with aero tips ..
