Guys,
Got an RV-9A that will fly next spring then be put up for sale. It
would have more value if it has flown.
Do I have to have all the initial 40 hours flown off? Orientation rides
with potential owners would be done within the 40 hours.
If the plane is sold, can it be ferried out of its test area by the new
owner for the completion of the test time?
Losing a medical changes everything doesn't it...

Only one person can be in the plane during the Phase 1 test period so
orientation rides are not possible. I have heard of people that moved during
their Phase 1 and were abele to relocate the plane. It would at minimum
require getting a new test area defined.

Joe, There is a company at the airport in Sauk Center, they build and have
flown off the hours on RV's. Also, the MN Wing would certainly have some
good answers. How about a CFI and/or an RV pilot at your airport or the
Rochester Airport. Sorry to hear about your medical.

Hi Joe,
I've never sold one within the flyoff time, but I bought a Dragonfly
once with about 4 hrs on it. I trailer-ed it back home & the local FSDO
re-issued the op-lims with a test area within our district. It's been so
long ago, I don't remember if they actually inspected the plane, but I
don't think that they did. It was basically just a paperwork swap,
similar to getting updated oplims that allow the owner to re-open phase
one after a mod.
I think that I've heard of ferry permits being issued during test time,
but that would probably depend on *your* FSDO, & the one where it's going.
As others have said, claiming that a potential purchaser is 'essential
crew' would be a bit of a stretch.
Sorry to hear about your medical. Are there any qualified pilots in your
area that would help fly off the time?

Consider what the empty weight will come in at. I believe it has been
reported that some 9s have been licensed as Light Sport with 1320 gross wt.

@Kelly: I don't think you can fly light sport after losing a medical.

Only if medical is officially denied are you banned from Light Sport.
If it just lapsed, or you learn of a condition you don't think the FAA
will approve, and let it lapse, you are okay as soon as your doctor says
you are fit to drive.
