Does any one know which way the oil flows thru the filter? Does it go from the inside out to the periphery or the other way round? If it goes from the outside to the inside, then I only have to inspect the outsie - easily visible - surface. If it goes the other way, I have to inspect the harder to get to (= really messy) inner surface. So, for a quick look you can just spread the pleats. But the right way is to cut it out of there and lay it flat. For the past 14-years=2C I have cut every fil ter open at oil change on my 2=2C536 Hobbs hours RV-6. There has NEVER be en anything on the inside but I do occasionally find stuff on the outside. Cut the paper off and stretch it out is the proper way to do it. Some guys was it out with solvent to inspect for even smaller parts. Yes I am an A&P / DAR.
