Subject: Mounting a replacement Tail wheel spring (Tapered Spring)
    From: "Edwardoc" <Rv8tor@mac.com>
Did a quick search and didn't find any other posts about replacing the tail wheel spring (the tapered spring rod). I had drilled an additional hole in my spring when I mounted an aftermarket tailwheel and then enlarged it to an AN4 to get it aligned. I later replaced the tailwheel with Van's standard unit and the hole was not required. The Rod snapped at the hole taxing in. My question is "does anyone have any suggestions on how to drill the new mounting hole in the spring at the base end inside the fuselage. I need to insert the new spring rod in the steel mounting fixture (WD 409 I think it is) and then drill a matching hole in the new spring. I think I know a way to get the hole to match exactly but want to know if anyone has a technique to do it since I can only drill from the bottom and cannot use a drill press to get a matching hole. I matched drilled the original holes all the way through. Also what are the cautions about drilling the spring steel. If you take the broken spring and the new one to a machinist it should be trivial for him to match drill the new one for you. -------------------------------------------------- From: "Edwardoc" <Rv8tor@mac.com> Sent: Sunday, March 18, 2012 3:48 PM Subject: RV-List: Mounting a replacement Tail wheel spring (Tapered Spring) > > Did a quick search and didn't find any other posts about replacing the > tail wheel spring (the tapered spring rod).
