Subject: | Riveting to a paintesd surface |
I am getting ready to add a doubler plate for an antenna I will be installing on
the underside of my fuselage.
It is already painted.
My initial thoughts were to rivet as though the paint was not there and paint the
rivets after. Not concerned about electrical bonding of the ground plane as
I will be taking care of that inside the fuselage.
Will the paint affect the compression strength of the rivets?
Thoughts please,
Ralph

I doubt it would be significant. Don't most of us rivit primed parts?
Not much different between that and paint.

Or, don't rivet. You can use the antenna mounting hardware to hold the doubler
plate in, and add an adhesive between the inside of the skin and the doubler
plate.
WRT electrical bonding, remember the objective is to achieve an RF ground, not
necessarily a DC ground. Doing as I suggest above will provide the RF ground.
