Subject: | need whiskey compass ? |
When my RV was signed off by the DAR it didn't have a compass (GRT system).
It did have a blank compass correction card. The DAR said he would let it
go, but if the airplane was going to be used for Part 135 ops it would need
a compass. So if I ever use my RV for Part 135 operations I guess I will go
to Walmart and get a compass.

That is the part that you will have ot work out with the DAR. I agree
with you in that I consider a Dynon a magnetic directional indicator but
there are otheres that don't agree within the FAA and the DARs. As has been
stated elsewhere it is the electrical part that gets in the way. Personally
I got the backup battery option on my Dynon and that was the end of the
discussion. But I also got a SIRS compass and installed it just in case
everything really went to sh**.

What am I missing? Where in 91.205 is a backup whiskey compass required.?
Paragraph (b) (3) requires a magnetic direction indicator. Can't this be an
electronic magnetic direction indicator?
Regards,
George

Tom,
If all you want to do is VFR then the dynon is fine. but if you want to
fly IFR then you will need to have a back-up whiskey compass. Reason?? In
the operating limitations that will be issued at the time of certification
one of the paragraphs will read: "Unless appropriately equipped in
accordance with 91.205 for night and/or IFR flight, aircraft is restricted
to day VFR." The first paragraph in both 91.205 (c) and (d) states that the
instruments in paragraph (b) are required.
I can get a lot more in depth about this if you would like but I think
the above is enough for what you want.

I have a Dynon D10-A and I bought the external compass module (wish I'd
selected the "internal" option because it was a lot of work to install).
Will a DAR require that I also have a whiskey compass?
Should I have a whiskey compass anyway just for redundancy?
