Ok all you "10" builders - I talked to Van's Tuesday around noonish and here's
the latest:
They will be mailing out an information packet later this week or early next.
The first 40 tail
kits will be ready to go around the 22nd of this month. At this point, they're
planning on filling
40 kits per month until the initial order (of a bit over a 100 kits) is taken care
of.

a tail kit. Oh yes, and the real clincher came from an RV-
8 Builder who pointed out that she would be able take out the back seat and put
2 golf bags and luggage in the 10. That sold her for sure!

Pete,
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you...
I will quickly answer your questions without repeating them, so you may need
to refer back to your original message to make sense of my
answers.
Before I order the tail kit, I have several questions:
1) I plan to haul my kids on almost every flight.....
1A) I need back seat cooling big time! Will the fiberglass roof shell allow
for the addition of a cooling duct with an external scoop similar to on a Bonanza?
Would there be an engineering reason that this could not be done...i.e. too
big a drag penalty? I already have a scoop design with a drain tube through
the lower fuselage in mind. If you have thoughts, I'd love to discuss it.....better
yet, I'd love for you to
DESIGN it! How could it be fastened to the roof?
1A) Yes, it's okay. You WILL (!) incur a drag penalty, so the trick will be
to minimize it. The kit will provide ventilation for the rear seat occupants.
1B) If roof duct is not practical, where could additional vents be place for the
back seat?
1B) Other than the roof, there are few practical alternatives.
1C) Could such a duct also support a drop down DVD screen, similar to my mini-van?
Do you think there is room? Would the Roof shell support the weight?
1C) Properly designed, such a duct could support the weight. The roof
structure is designed to withstand "rollover" loads, so the weight of an
entertainment screen would presumable be no problem...the devil is in
the details however and whatever is installed needs to be properly
designed.
1D) Also, I'd like to put reading lights there as well. Do you foresee any issues
with getting wiring to the roof area?
1D) Reasonable wiring runs in the roof will be no problem. You are on
your own as to design and placement. You may not penetrate the face
sheets of the composite roof inner skin with wire runs.
1E) Since I will be hauling children on a regular basis, would it be possible to
have the rear seat back recline a bit?
1E) In a practical sense, no. You are on your own to add weight,
complexity, and cost to achieve whatever rear seat recline mechanism
you feel is worth the trade-offs.
2) We live in Iowa. In addition to cooling, we'll need back seat heat. It has been
my experience that back seat passengers are always cold.
2A) Is there enough room in the channel between the seats to carry a scat tube
for heat....or
is there a way to place an electric heater for back seat use. A removable one would
be ideal, so I could remove the weight penalty during the summer months.
2) We have already provided for ducting heat to the rear seats.
3) Several builders have made long baggage areas into the tail cone to haul ski's,
fishing rods, etc. I love the idea, but am worried about the aft CG calculations.
3A) I realize this is not part of the design, but I don't want to build something
without factory support. Is this an option that you could see offering in the
future?
3B) Do you have any thoughts on the subject?
3) I doubt that we will be offering this as part of the design because
while everybody says they want such an option, few actually install it,
and fewer still use it. Again, you are on your own to add weight, complexity,
and cost to achieve whatever tailcone baggage tube you
feel is worth the trade-offs.
I realize that I am trying to fit an awful lot into the plane...and weight for
extra goodies will
be a factor.....but the more I build this for 'family", the more willing they will
be to "get in a
and GO!".
I appreciate your thoughts? Perhaps other builders have the same questions...and
discussions lik
e these could be put in the next RVator! I'd love to hear what others have to say
on this subject!
The maximum gross weight of the RV-10 is 2700 lb. PERIOD!!! Every single ounce
of "extras" that you add to the empty weight will deduct not only from performance
but also from the amount of people, fuel, and baggage that you can carry
without exceeding 2700 lb. Please, please
don't give in to the temptation to operate your RV-10 outside of our weight and
CG recommendations. You are asking for our
recommendations about all the extras you are considering therefore I believe
that you value our inputs...please show that you indeed value our
inputs by adhering to our gross weight, CG, and engine output recommendations.
My best advice to you and others is to simply build
the aircraft as designed and don't try to make the RV-10 into something that
it isn't.
Thanks for your interest in the RV-10! So long for now.
Ken Krueger, Engineer
Van's Aircraft
Thanks! Expect my tail kit order in the next 2 weeks!
