    Subject: Flat rating an engine
--> RV10-List message posted by: LessDragProd@aol.com Hi All, Just a general observation. Let's say there is a 350 hp engine available that weighted the same as the Lycoming IO-540 for the RV-10. Van says the RV-10 is 260 hp maximum. Period. For the 350 hp engine running at maximum RPM, there is a manifold pressure, above idle and below full throttle, were it is putting out 260 hp. By limiting the manifold pressure to a maximum value below full throttle, you will only get 260 hp for take off and climb. Now as you climb, you can hold the manifold pressure at this maximum value. Still just getting 260 hp. Until you get high enough that you can't hold that manifold pressure. I realize this isn't how we normally run reciprocating engines. However, in the turbine world this is very common to protect the turbine engine gear box. I believe it's called "flat rating" the engine. Jim Ayers
