Great looking panel Tim. Mine will also be on display at SteinAir but not
as high dollar as yours. I went the Grand Rapids three display panel route.
See you at OSH.

Ron,
They turn down right after they exit the tank and penetrate the bottom wing gap
seal right at the wing root between the fuselage side and the last rib.

Tim,
Those displays have a pretty low profile, looks like a piece of cake to get them
wired up. I assume they provide a harness vs. you having to build it yourself?

Um, yeah....right. ;) Kinda sorta. As it turns out, we're kind of
rushing to get it done, and Chelton is a bit behind on thier harnesses.
So, they still owe us harnesses, and I'm still expecting them, but
I'm not going to have them for the show. So, our plan is to wire
the stack, and make our own harnesses for the time being. It might
be some wasted work if we end up using their harnesses, but it may
also be that we can call them up and tell them we want to skip
the harnesses and see if we can work out a credit. To date, I'm
missing the Airinc digital to RS232 converter also, so although
the panel will be wired, it might not be 100% complete. I have
the WSI weather module too. We're just going to do as much as we
can reasonably get done before the show without killing ourselves.
Luckily I'm maybe 6-8-10 months from flying, so there's plenty of
time for a full finish later.
This is a good warning to all, actually.....I know the lead times
on many many products is pretty long. Almost NONE of your stuff will
likely order and ship in a week or two. So, especially with the
OSH sales piling up, my suggestion is to try to get your stuff
ordered a few MONTHS in advance of when you need it. If you don't
give it a 3 month lead time at least, you might be cutting it
short. If you're not getting any EFIS stuff though, and going
all Garmin and Steam, you can cut that time down.
I can't complain too much...I was really rushing to get this done
for the show...and, I actually really enjoy that sort of wiring.
I'd trade ANYONE a pile of wiring hours for a pile of fiberglass
work. ;)

I forgot to mention one more thing....
The harnesses are expensive and a pain for Chelton to provide. There
are new "G2" processors (I think that's right) in the new screens, and
those cost more. They told me about the time I was ordering that within
a week or two they were going to discontinue providing the harnesses
with the systems because they just couldn't keep that added cost
included with the new processors in them too. So, it is very likely
that anyone ordering today will either be wiring their own Chelton
harness, or buying it separately. The connectors are kind of
special too....26 pin and 62 pin D-sub with HD .030 pins.
Just wanted to prepare anyone going that route in the future.

Subject: | Cost effective NR in the RV-10 |
Here is a low cost NR solution for outfitting the RV-10 (four
passenger). If you order the Bose Quiet Comfort 2 headsets from Bose
Mailorder by 7/31 you get 10% additional savings off retail.
http://www.bose.com/controller?eventVIEW_PRODUCT_PAGE_EVENT&productqc2
_headphones_index&pageName/index_3.jsp Sport Aviation just advertised
12 equal monthly payments with ZERO interest for those 12 months. These
units are only 7 oz each (versus 12 oz for the aviation units). They
have the similar capability of the aviation version, except no
individual volume control on each headset. http://www.uflymike.com/
With the UFLYMIKE boom mike adapter you have a cost effective solution
for a set of four for far less than the price of two aviation units.
This guy is an ATP who found a better mouse trap. BOSE is seeing red
cause scores of Commercial Air Carrier pilots are opting for the light
weight and QC2 cost savings.
I have no affiliation with this product or Bose. Just bought mine
Saturday.... See you at OSH '2005.

I had a pleasant surprise today....George Costigan, a new RV-10 bulder,
actually put me down as his finders fee guy from Van's. I'm very
thankful that he thinks I've helped him out in some way. It's
a very nice surprise indeed.
This does trigger me to mention to any lurking future builders though...
When you order your Kit from Van's, you can referr a name who
either helped you come to the purchase of the kit, or helps
you in some manner with something....in my case, it's an RV-4
builder locally (Rick) who was instrumental by "letting" ;) me
help rivet his wings, so that I knew I could actually DO this
kind of kit. With his motivation, I overcame the fear of
the purchase.
Just remember, when you buy your first kit, you have the opportuntiy
to pass on a thanks in the form of a finders fee to someone.
I belive you should pick someone who you really think provided
some motivation, or will provide you some help down the road.
it's a big project, and ideally you'll have a local builder who
can help...and they'd be the perfect candidate for such a gift.
I'm ABSOLUTELY NOT fishing for more of these myself, but I
would like to make sure people know about that policy so that
people can take advantage of the gift and not just forget about
it and let it go unclaimed.
For the record, I actually don't know exactly what the finders
fee is. I can't remember if it's cash, or a credit for stuff
from Van's, and I don't know how much it is. I did ask my
buddy Rick at the time, but I just don't know anymore.
Thanks George, and good luck with your kit!

I have a table saw with a cat iron top. I back the saw plade down and back rivet
using the table saw. It has extensions which helps to hold the plarger pieces.
I cover the edges with a old bath towel to prevent scratches on the edges
of the table saw.
Works for me.
Look in the phone book for a machine shop. They will have steel plates or can
cut them for you.

Greetings,
I want to build-in a large (at least 36" x 16") steel plate in my
benchtop for back riveting. Most of the tool vendors sell wimpy little
plates that are just too small. I've seen a number of complaints on
this list about that.
Any ideas on where I could pick up something like that? If it's wood or
aluminum, I know where to go - but steel is something I don't know much
about. Would a metal scrap yard have something like this?
What have you guys done?

I went to the local welding/ steel shop, they can order or cut anything
to size for you. Just polish it real well, and route out the hole in
your workbench top. Also put fluorescent lines all the way across both
directions marking where your plate ends!!! sounds like it should be
obvious, but if you have someone helping they might not realize when you
are getting close to the edge, nor will they be aware of what happens
when there is no back plate!

Subject: RV10-List: Steel Plate for back riveting
Greetings,
I want to build-in a large (at least 36" x 16") steel plate in my
benchtop for back riveting.
Oshkosh Friday - Sunday.
Jeff

Make sure you get one that is designed for cutting metal OR one
that you can get a metal (aluminum) blade. Bought a Ryoble (spelling ??)
9" but have to order blades from on-line source. Sears didn't have metal
blades for their our bandsaw (Victorville Store) either. Bought two
blades & they work great. KABONG 8*) Do Not Archive

I've decided to go and buy a bandsaw tomorrow. For you
RV-10 guys, will a 9 or 10 inch bandsaw suffice or are there many times
you wish you had a 12 inch. I'll probably buy from sears or home depot.
Any specific specs I need to look for???

Yeah, he stopped over in Iowa City but sadly I never actually met him (just drooled on the glass). Are they coming to OSH? If so, the airport hotel owner is hosting a pre-OSH pool party on Saturday (http://www.alexisparkinn.com/fly-in_pool_party.htm). Anyone flying by is welcome to stop in. I certainly wouldn't mind another drool opportunity.

Ron,
They turn down right after they exit the tank and penetrate the bottom wing
gap seal right at the wing root between the fuselage side and the last rib.

All the back-riveting I have done has required the work to sit down flush on
the back-riveting plate. If you have clecos inserted in every second, third
or even fourth hole they will not let the skin sit down flush on such a large
plate. I have used the one that Avery sells and have been happy with it so
far.
