I also used the spring loaded doors and painted white line on my RV8, and bought
a 5 inch valve core extension at a semi-truck supply house. HOWEVER, since I
changed out my tubes to Desser Tire supplied (800 247-8473), Aero Class Leakguard
inner tubes ($33 each), I have not had to add any air to either tire! That
change was in Nov of 2003. They really work!

There isn't enough clearance for me when I install my front tire valve stem
cover either. I was planning using a plastic cover from my car tires, but I
just went out to try that and that gives about 0.01" clearance on the fork.

RV-10 list,
On my RV-10 nose wheel I'm finding that the valve stem (with the valve
stem cover off) misses the nose wheel fork by only 1/8". If the valve
stem cover is on, the valve stem cover hits the nose wheel fork when the
wheel is rotated. Is this what others are seeing?

At one point on a list I had a reply from someone who
actually was using the GDC34A Arinc to serial converter
like I am to get TIS traffic on their Chelton or other
EFIS from the GTX330 Transponder.
Right now that's my last remaining thing to debug that
I've identified, and I'm hoping to talk to someone
who's got it working to verify settings.
Anyone out there with that equipment that can comment?

Tim,
I do not know if this makes a difference, but perhaps you should test the
valve stem clearence in turns and such when the tire is less inflated and
with different weight on the wheel.
If the clearence is that small, some of the above factors may make a major
difference and tear the stem off.
Then you would be like the Airbus landing in Los Angeles with the stuck
front gear.
Just thinking out loud.
On another two notes.
Did anyone find a fantastic hole deburring tool. I find that I am putting
my body into some very strange positions to use the hand hole deburrer. I
woke up with a very sore back and one leg longer then the other. I can't
believe no one sells a tool specifically for this. A battery opporated
device, small in both legth and diameter, like a thick permanent marker.
My right angle drill at low RPM still chatters slightly and the holes are
not as clean as the manual tool.
Item two:
What should one look to spend on a rebuilt IO- 540. and how much to spend on
a set of pipes for the engine. Does the plane need to go to the pipe
manufacturer or do they have patterns for our cowling.
Thanks,
The un-educated Glider guy.

I found a used set of the Cogsdill deburring tools on ebay. I got them
for $75. I think they work well. Easy to use. I have to battery
operated drills and am currently working on the elevators. Will put
the number 40 size in one drill and the 1/8 in the other. Couple
revolutions on the outside and inside of the hole and it's done. I
think it works better than the hand deburring tools.

Why would you think a conversation on auxiliary fuel tanks need not be
in the archive? From what I understand this list is setup to share ideas
and tips on building an RV10, and I would be very interested in
extending the fuel range by having a removable aux tank in the passenger
area. Yes, I would look in the archives first to not ask the same
questions multiple times, but by using the DNA this will never get in
there, depending on which email he replies too.
Most times I would agree, but in this case I think it is a valuable
discussion.

I use a cordless screwdriver with the deburring bit from Avery to deburr
large volumes of parts. It tuns as slow or slower than a hand operated
de-burring tool and they come out lovely. I think its an Ozito brand

If Do Not Archive is in a post, anywhere in a post, does that post then not
get archived? If so, then I agree with Dan, otherwise, I agree with Tim.

The idea of an archive is of great value, only if the readers use it
First. We are getting lots of repeat questions (with answers waiting
quietly in the Archive) recently from individuals who were not privy
back a year ago. If they don't look for it the archive first, value is
NOT. Much of what is said does not need to be filed into perpetuity.
Some people are lazy, others just want it permanently recorded. I
support Tim. Hence.

Actually, this allows me to ask a question that is probably answerable
if I took the time to go look it up on the Matronics rules page.
If Do Not Archive is in a post, anywhere in a post, does that post then
not get archived? If so, then I agree with Dan, otherwise, I agree with
Tim. This is not quite like Tevya, where they are both right but can't
both be right, but it's close. Now, pardon me, I must go out to the
Barn and fix my Wagon.

Chris' answer will be interesting to archive when he gives it, but
what's the point of archiving a message that says,
"Chris can you tell us about the fuel tank."

I don't know if I'd bother Chris, it's a pretty simple design as is and
reasonably clean.

Anyone looking into modding the baggage door to a "clean" non-piano hinge
design with internal hinges (like a Bonanza)? Or is it even possible?

I have found great results using 2" packaging tape to cover and protect skins while
riveting. I started with a tip from Randy Debauw using the packaging tape
to cover the head of the swivel headed rivet set. Then I decided to try packaging
tape on the skin for holding and (setting protection), works great. Anyone
doing this? I use SOLVE cleaner by SEM to wipe the skins when complete.

Paul - yes good tip. I have used the el cheapo plastic (rather than cloth) packing
tape on my flush set extensively throughout the build process with excellent
results. Started out taping rivets, but found results were just as good with
the tape on the flush set. Also works brilliantly on a bucking bar when back
riveting.
cheers,

Clear plastic tape? how thick? (mils) How about masking tape, would that
work?

I use masking tape on my flush set. The blue type masking tape does not
last as long and the regular. I also use it on the sides of bucking
bars to prevent scratches.

The tape we use for virtually all aircraft work is
http://www.uline.com/ProductDetail.asp?model=S-10248&root=&searchedkeywords=s-10248
and no masking tape is not good for riveting; leaves a residue and is not
transparent.

I keep waiting to hear about the aux fuel tanks and keep finding issues
about archives and DNAs.
One thing to consider each time you ask a question is to make the statement,
" I have read the archives pertaining to this question and I was wondering
whether anyone else has something to offer?"
Then we can all go back to the archives and re read and post only that
information that is new and improved.
An interesting thing to consider is that just because you find something in
the archives, there might be someone else who has since done something in a
better way.
Also consider, if there is a post which you feel you have already dealt with
and have nothing further to offer, then delete it without wasting your time
reading it.
This list is a great resource, but you don't have to click if you don't want
to.
So many options and so little time!
Thanks for all the suggestions on the riveting of the tailcone
