Deems,
I don't know if you've got a core to trade in but if you do, please keep in
mind that they apparently have been returning to the exchange person with a
bill up to $5k well after the over haul telling them that the case exchanged
is TU and that the person must immediately pay a service core charge...and
that the case has been destroyed and they have no proof of their claim but you
owe them $XX immediately. The core/service charge well after the overhaul,
without proof has caused a lot of discussion in the engine community, along
with their cranks.
By the way this did happen to a friend of Kelly and mine in the Piper
community.
If you really want the Lycoming engine and you've gotten a core to trade,
before committing, I'd check out the total package of costs from Lycoming and
get a full statement as to total charges current and future. In addition to
all that Kelly gave you on the parts manufacturing situation, you'd hate to
have a surprise on a case return charge. And you'd probably get the bill about
the time when you are getting ready to crank up your first flight. Putting
you in one great mood! FYI---

Well, the weather is a bit touchy this month, and I'm scrambling
to get everything done I need before Sun-N-Fun, but sure,
if anyone ever wants to come and drop in, I'd love to give
a ride in the -10 and especially if you're looking at the
Chelton screens, it would be a real kick for someone to
come and see. I'd never flown behind an EFIS at all, but I'll
tell you what, I'm glad the features sold themselves, because
flying with the system will sell itself too....might not want
to come fly it if you are an impulsive type. ;)
So sure, if anyone wants to swing by and go for a flight,
be my guest. I don't know that I'll have any opportunity
to do this during sun-n-fun. Perhaps at OSH I might, but
that might be iffy too depending on what the family does.

Tim,
I am seriously looking at the dual screen Cheltons for my RV10. However, the
magazines say that Chelton is coming up with a dual screen system just for RV10's.
Is this the same thing that you have in your 10? What do you know about
it?

The message below is from back in August 2005.
I just received my finish and FWF kits. :-) Included are 2 thin (.020
or .025) strips 1/2" by 48". I cannot find them on my inventory list.
Are these the shims for the cowling hinges or are they needed for the
finish kit or FWF?

Joe,
I don't think you have anything to worry about with the RV-10
stuff coming up. I believe that there's only a few things
different. The screens are the same except for the splash
logo on startup, and that can be changed anytime.
Then, they'll be making a complete wiring harness for the system
that's custom for the RV-10, as long as you mount everything
in the place they specify. I'm sure they'll do a fine job
finding good placements, but I'm not sure that everyone will
care for a fully built harness, just because it's easier
to pull the wires and terminate them after they're through the
conduit. At any rate, if you are really looking for a harness,
then that would be something to consider...but the harnesses
aren't that hard to make.
Also, they say they're coming out with a dual-screen system,
but that's just because most RV-10 builders buying Chelton's
are assumed to want 2 screens, as opposed to 1 or 3. 1
would be very limiting in my opinion. 2 would work OK, but
I personally feel very compelled that there are good reasons
to consider 3 if a person is truly building a good higher
end panel. So just because their RV-10 package is considered
2 screens, everything is just custom add-ons for us.
The one other piece of addition stuff I believe, and don't
quote me on this, is software that you can use to reply your
entire flight, in 3D, after you download the flight data
to your PC.
So there's nothing ultra-compelling that would cause me to
wait past the time you need to order it. Also, I'm sure
that all of the options would be available in some way or
another after you purchased the base stuff....like I'm sure
they'd sell you a harness or whatever...at least that would
be my guess.
I think you'll be able to hear a lot more about it during
or after Sun-N-Fun, as I'm guessing they're targeting their
major information release for the show....probably along
with some specials, but again, I don't know that for sure,
just a guess.

Hi Larry,
The shop I am using has said Lycoming will be raising the kit prices 3-4
thousand effective 3/14. I trust that they are being straight with me as I
am a repeat customer. They have always been good about follow-up and
letting me know what is happening in the market. I was most interested in
the 540 prices so I am not as sure about what is happening with the others.
By putting a deposit down a few weeks back the engine will be delivered at
the current price. Delivery is running 3-4 months for this shop.
Finally, when checking on various options for an engine, and for those who
do not have to have a certified engine, they are no longer recommending
overhauling as after buying a core it is very nearly the same price as the
kit engine and of course you are getting all new parts.
Your my mileage may vary depending on circumstances.

Larry,
I may be off, but I think that material is used on the inside of the
fuselage top when riveting to the side skins. I recommend you check that
out before using it on the cowling hinges, although it would be nice if it
were provided.

Thanks Rob: I'll be putting the pressure ports in the recommended locations today.
One more question (and remember you are dealing with a first time builder):
Is there any particular location that the access hole for the water drain
probe should go? Maybe right directly below the drain? I will see you at Sun
and Fun toward the end of the week. Thanks again. Jay

If you move the ports you will need to calibrate the system.
You should not have a problem having the ports behind the lights. The calibration
data that we use is from a plane with the lights in front of the ports.
Anyone going to Sun-N-Fun needs to stop by Booth D-92 and see our new RV-10

Tim, I think the best and only practical way to keep people off and out of
the plane is if each of us flew the plane an hour each, tag team like. We
could probably keep most folks off and out of it that way for a day or two,
maybe three. I'm sure the gang wouldn't mind the sacrifice. There'd be a
sign-up list and all. Done right, you know. It'd be tough, but for you,
Tim, I'm sure we could work something out. ! !

Tim has a write up on the modification that Vans made to the engine
mount to get better clearance with the sump. Read it here
<http://www.myrv10.com/N104CD/engine/20051022/index.html>.
I thought this was going to be a modification that Vans would
incorporate into future mounts. Mine arrived Friday and it does not
have the modification. :-(

Patrick,
I think your info is a little outdated. Per the memo dated 03 April 2005, at the
below link, there is no longer a core charge as long as it is a "like" core,
it is running, and it is the same engine. So any boat anchor will do. It only
makes sense for them to get rid of the "junk" out in the field.

If the above link does not work go to the below link and click on "Open Letter
to Our Customers." Or do a Google search on "Lycoming Core policy"

Tim,
Yes, mounting the engine was highly motivational. I have JUST over 1/4"
(read that 17/64") from the sump to the mount. I would have sworn it was
more than that when I first put the engine on. I guess I'll be calling
Van's tomorrow to make sure it's okay. In case anyone is curious, I have an
Aerosport built kit Lycoming IO-540D4A5.
Also, I concur with John's suggestion for keeping your airplane safe. I'll
happily keep it well clear of prying eyes for an hour or two! ;) I hope to
run into you on Saturday.
Marcus

Congrats on mounting the engine. That's a fun step. How was your
clearance to the bar below the sump?
I'll be at S-N-F. Currently my plan is to bring the plane to
Lakeland Tuesday to put in Van's booth, but I won't stick around
for the show. I'll do family things during the week and then
come to the show Friday and Saturday, and then leave for home
after the show Saturday or early Sunday. Unless something
falls through on Van's end, my plane will be at their booth. Any
help provided by you guys keeping people off and out of the plane
will be well appreciated.

Subject: | When to install second U-1002 Isolator Washer |
U-1002 isolator washers go on top of the four elastomers on the nose gear mount.
Page 46-07 says to install the second U-1002 isolator washer later, after the
elastomers have been set and taken shape. When will that be?

Subject: | Wing tip nutplates |
Getting ready to do the nutplates in the wingtip for the landing light, nav/strobe
light and the clear shield that covers them. Reading the instructions it
makes no mention of HOW to buck/squeeze the rivets in these nutplates. What
is everybody doing to get these rivets in? Can you buck the fiberglass? I don't
believe I can get my 3" squeezer on any of them..........all suggestions and
pictures welcome! Thanks in advance for your ideas guys.
