I am still in the planning faze and rounding up tools but getting ready to purchase the empennage kit in the next couple of weeks. I am wondering about motors. Specifically which 540's will work w/o a whole lot of re-arranging? I am sure this has been covered several times but I cannot find much searching through the archived messages. It seems there are several Aztec motors IO-540-C4B5's on the market. What about a Cherokee six motors O-540-E4B5? Will any of these work? Any info on motors and how to read motor codes would be appreciated. Ben Westfall Portland, OR Almost an Empennage

That can be normal if you are not VERY careful in drilling that bolt hole that holds it. I recommend using a reamer (undersized if possible), and do it very slowly and carefully. Our flying -10 has one step that wobbles, but the ones we are working on now are all solid. That one hole makes all the difference. While it will probably not shear the bolt, it is still a little bit annoying. I guess you could also go with an oversized bolt if the hole is a little too big, or go up to the next size. Any parallel valve 540 will do the trick. The main thing that may not be the same would be the engine mount ears, but that is not the end of the world because they can be changed. The parallel valve engines are the 235-260HP versions, not the 300+HP versions. I think the angle valve models start in K, so anything else should be fine. Some Aztecs have the 300HP versions, but both of the model numbers that you mentioned should be fine, though I am pretty sure you will have to change the ears if they come off the Aztec. We have a C4B5 on N256H and we had to change the ears. Aerocrafters in Oregon sells the panel for about 1300 bucks. You can install everything yourself. When you have them do it, that's when the money flows. --> RV10-List message posted by: Tim Olson <Tim@MyRV10.com> Patrick, My steps wobble a little too. The fit isn't super tight, and depending on how perfectly and proper sized you drill the holes you may get a little slop. I think as long as you don't let it get out of hand and oblong the holes you probably have no worries. If so, you could always come up with a gap fill material on one half if necessary. Thanks for the comments on the plane. There are a LOT of people coming and talking to me about it. Today was my first day hanging out at the show. --> RV10-List message posted by: Dan Masys <dmasys@cox.net> I am working my way through the instructions checking off everything that has already been done on the quickbuild fuselage. Currently stuck on the firewall, where the plans show the F-6221-1 "Tri-Gear Brake Bracket" (i.e, the little angle piece that has the fittings where the aluminum brake lines connect to the flex brake lines). This part wasn't riveted on by the folks in the Philippines, and I can neither find it in my parts inventory or on the fuse parts list. From other builders' QB websites it looks like their firewalls may have arrived from the factory with this bracket already riveted. Do any of you QB builders remember whether you had to rivet that bracket on, and if so, was it in the fuse kit or did it arrive in the finish kit with other brake parts. Thanks, -Dan Masys #40448

Try Tony and Eric at Accuracy Avionics. They were the actual guys that built my panel. There new shop is open for business. The fiberglass panel with be updated from mine because of the things they have learned. They sold several complete panels at there last place of employment. On of the items they want to supply is panels to customers so they can complete them. There number is 866-548-7265 or 541-388-1788. --> RV10-List message posted by: "Byron Gillespie" <bgill1@charter.net> Hey Tim: See that you are checking in on the forum again. Sorry I missed you @ S&F but the plane looks great. I was there Wednesday and Thursday morning. There was a steady group around the display. It was a pleasure to meet several other -10 builders and actually see a -10 in person - kind of made me ready to get back and complete the fiberglass work and get the engine mounted. This trip was a decision base as I had to make some final decisions on the panel and get it rolling. I bit the bullet and went for the Chelton duals, had some good discussions with "Stein" and made a decision to let him do the panel. This was my first fly-in (although I drove down) - pretty impressive. The wife even had a great time and is talking about next year. Looking forward to hearing some of the other reports as they flow in.... Byron Gillespie #40253 Finishing kit

These SnF posts got me thinking I ought to just jump in the RV-7 and fly down to Lakeland tomorrow (only 550 nm - no biggee ;-) ). Then the monster cold front that was spawning T-storms and tornadoes (saw my first-ever funnel cloud today...) in the neighborhood and across the southeast convinced me that it actually would be a good weekend to just stay home and pound some more rivets. --> RV10-List message posted by: Tim Olson <Tim@MyRV10.com> Absolutely I'll see y'all there. It's only an hour by -10 for me to OSH. I'll have only a couple photos from SNF to post...it's been busy by the plane with questions. If anyone else takes -10 related SNF photos, send them on over to me and I'll post some highlights of SNF for the builders. Include comments and I can add that to the page with credit to you. I know there are some interesting things. RV-10 A/C, a new RV-10 TruTrak AP, Henkjan brought his locking door latches to check out (very nice at maybe $200/pr ballpark (don't hold him to that)), and lots of other cool stuff as well. I only wish I had time to check it all out. Anyone have any advice on who's el'cheapo portable O2 system is the best bet? That's about the only big thing I'm shopping for. I don't want a permanent install right now, and probably won't use it often because of the kids, but it would be nice to have for some trip legs. I may end up in San Diego this summer. Can you buy just the panel and build up the avionics yourself? Thought I would try here before asking Aero sport. THX Ben Westfall Portland, OR Almost an Empennage

--> RV10-List message posted by: "John Dunne" <acs@acspropeller.com.au> That's the funny part about aircraft parts mentality. My wife was talking to the kitchen consultant about this design and that design and I was only half listening, as I was busy manoeuvring pictures of EFIS displays on my cardboard cutout of the panel and I hear the kitchen guy say to my wife, "well I hope you're prepared for the shock, the entire kitchen upgrade I'm afraid will cost you around $20,000! all done in the actions and tone of Dr.Evil. I had a bit of a coughing fit and quietly replaced my chelton cutout with a GRT cutout and then spent the next few days trying to convince my wife that 20K was way over the top to spend on a kitchen! Aircraft building! you gotta love it!
