I want to do the upholstery on my front seats. Does anybody know if
there are patterns available anywhere, or am I on my own? I asked Van's
but they haven't replied yet.
Thanks,

I think most of the professionals who have done seats like that would
consider their design/pattern fairly proprietary. Your best bet would be
someone who has done their own.

Subject: | Re: Lycoming Thunderbolt Engines |
Jon,
I can appreciate who you are and what you're doing, but as far as I'm
concerned, my only question is what can you specifically do for the RV-10 builder?
Right now, I can purchase an experimental 260 hp Lycoming XIO-540-D4A5 from
Van's for $39,200, plus shipping.
What alternatives are you offering? The fact that Thunderbolt is an
"experimental hot rod shop" doesn't mean much to me, because Van's has admonished
their customers to avoid engines greater than 260 hp. Are you considering
bringing back the 480 series, building it up to generate the 260 hp at a lighter
weight, all while being more efficient so as to use less fuel? Or another
clean-sheet design, where your new engineers with their updated knowledge base
can come up with something more innovative than roller tappets or lightweight
starters?
Seriously, what specifically is the Lycoming Thunderbolt team offering the
RV-10 builder and at what cost?

Ok guys, I knew I'd take my licks from some of you. The fact remains that
I'm one of you and here to help you if I can, regardless of whether or not
you ever buy a Lycoming. To the guy who busted my chops for not declaring
myself to be a pilot, please note the first paragraph of my initial post.
The only reason I'm not a pilot is because I filled out the application for
my medical honestly. Uncle Sam didn't like it when I checked the box for
"Frequent Headaches." I'm not done, though. I am going to make another
attempt for my medical in a few months. To those of you who posted words of
encouragement, thank you.

You know,
All your QB people wouldn't have this problem if you just built it yourself.....then
you could justify your sore knees, neck and back like all of us slow build
guys and gals!!
Found a cleco under the floor huh? And they laughed at me when I made trays that
held each cleco, at least I know where each and everyone of them are. I inventory
them after each session....FOD awarness ingrained in me since I was 17,
can't help it.

Rick, good post. Now do you know enough to look for SWARF? I have a
wiring PPT presentation that I gave to Tim for the RV University which
identifies its importance - or actually the lack of it by looking for it
and elimination of same.

I have checked the archives and did find some discussion on O2 systems, but
before I put down over 6K for an EDS-4ip system from Mountain High I wanted
to give the group a shot to tell me I am making a mistake. Am I?
I will be flying out of Ogden Ut and my wife does not handle more than 15
minutes above 9000 and most places we go require flying above 9K (IFR they
all do).
I will be doing my own filling, so would like a system with very good
endurance so I don't run out on long trips. I have a portable system now
that barely covers one leg on most of my trips in the old 182.
Fire away if you have an opinion.
Also, anyone installed one in a RV-10 yet would want to give me some
pointers.

I don't have a real opinion ....... but a caution for those filling
their own tanks. Here's a link to pictures and text of what happened to
a guy that was filling his own dive tanks.

Considering your personal situation, it sounds really reasonable.
I'm not sure if that's the exact same system Randy installed, but
he has a Mountain High electronic pulse system, and it works
fantastic for him. He has it semi-permanent installed behind the
baggage bulkhead, so it can be filled easily without bottle removal.
From what he told me in the past, he's really happy with it.
I myself bought a portable system, but if I was using it as much
as you sound like you will, I'd permanent mount it....and in fact
I may do just that in the winter when I do my condition inspection.
Glad to hear you're doing your own filling. I just happened to
have 4 300cu.ft. storage bottles laying around. 2 I had converted
to Helium for mixed gas scuba diving fills. I'm now converting
one of those 2 back to Oxygen service and I'll have a 3-bottle
system to fill from in my hanger. If anyone is needing O2
on the way in to OSH, I may be able to help you on that one. ;)
I guess I'm a fan of high up-front cost and the rewards of long-term
savings.
Oh, and I caught Linn's post just before hitting Send. Scary
stuff if you don't do it right. I've personally witnessed
the effects of adiabatic compression ignited oxygen fires,
so I can vouch for there being real hazards. That said, if you
use good O2 cleaned equipment, and use it slowly and properly,
there isn't really much to worry about for the most part.
In general, you're probably much less safe refueling your plane,
or even worse....your car, but that's IF you use proper
procedures.
