I bought the ECI 90 degree oil filter adaptor and it comes with a quick drain built in so you can drain the oil filter separately without having to punch a hole in the filter. I removed the adaptor quick drain, which is a 1/4 inch pipe thread hole, and used the opening to attach the inlet line from my pre-oilier so I will still have to punch a hole in the filter. I looked at Scott's pics. Looks like the filter is turned 90 degrees by the adapter and is butt high. So by punching a hole in the top (butt) of the filter, the oil drains back into the engine with nothing left after about 20 minutes. This looks like a mess saving way to change the oil filter. What specific adapter did you order from B&C for your IO-540? I looked at their website and they have several. Subject: Oil Filter Adapter
--> RV10-List message posted by: "Mark Ritter" <mritter509@msn.com> Roger, That's how it works. It's the Experimental Model BC700 ($395). You will need a spacer from B&C so the filter will clear the motor mount. It's either the 1.4" or 2.5" spacer. I'll look and see which one you will need but the info should be in the archives or B&C will know. Sorry for the short term memory loss - its hell getting old. --> RV10-List message posted by: "Mark Ritter" <mritter509@msn.com> Roger, One more thought. If you are going with the 90 degree adapter install it before you mount your engine. One of the four bolts holding the factory one on is a stud that has to be taken out. It's much easier to remove with more working room. My engine was on the plane and it took some doing to get the stud out. Subject: N585MR Flies!
--> RV10-List message posted by: "Marcus Cooper" <coop85@bellsouth.net> I finally took to the skies this morning with a (as seems to be the standard) very uneventful flight. The #1 CHT got warmer than I'd like so I didn't keep the power as high as I planned, but otherwise it flew great! Lots of spectators and encouragement from family and the squadron mates so that made it that much more exciting. One question for the group regarding the high CHT. I know it will drop as the engine breaks in some, but I have the standard kit baffle that covers the leading edge of the cylinder (on both sides). It seems that reducing the size some would help but I'd be open to ideas before I start hacking away at it. The other temps were within reason (<400 with #1 pushing 435 and slightly above momentarily) so I'm hesitant to make any huge changes to the rest of the baffling or cowling without further data. Thanks for all the help on-line, especially Tim Olsen, the process would have taken a whole lot longer had I worked in a vacuum of information. Marcus 40286 - FLYING, 39hrs and 38 minutes to passengers! Do not archive

I removed the adaptor quick drain, which is a 1/4 inch pipe thread hole, and used the opening to attach the inlet line from my pre-oilier so I will still have to punch a hole in the filter. So by punching a hole in the top (butt) of the filter, the oil drains back into the engine with nothing left after about 20 minutes. This looks like a mess saving way to change the oil filter. --> RV10-List message posted by: Tim Olson <Tim@MyRV10.com> That's awesome Marcus! My wife was just reminding me that today was your day, so we were waiting for the news. Yes, I did trim my baffles (in front of the cylinders) down. One at least 3/8" and one about 1/4". I may actually trim them another 1/4" to 3/8" on both sides yet. It did help the temps, as 1&2 were the hot ones on those first flights before cutting them. I do know that Vic removed his completely on his -10 and he's having luck with that too, so I wouldn't worry too much about trimming them back a little. When tall, they cut off most of the flow to the front of those cylinders. Glad to hear it was uneventful. Nothing worse than an eventful first flight, huh? ;) Tim Olson - RV-10 N104CD - Flying do not archive Marcus Cooper wrote: > --> RV10-List message posted by: "Marcus Cooper" <coop85@bellsouth.net> > > I finally took to the skies this morning with a (as seems to be the > standard) very uneventful flight. --> RV10-List message posted by: Tim Olson <Tim@MyRV10.com> Yeah, youbetcha, that baby was a handful to fly. I've never quite flown anything with that wingspan before, so shooting the approach into KLUM was a bit of a test for me, especially with never having any jet time before. It was quite an experience....I'll have to relive the story of my glory flight to my grandkids some day. I just can't believe Steve gave me the keys. ;) Tim Olson - RV-10 N104CD - Flying do not archive Chris wrote: > I was fooling around with this website and found it interesting to see > the type of plane Tim has actually been flying.
