I had the same high temps on my #1 and #2 cylinders during the
flyoff period. The weekend we did the flyoff it was 98 - 102 on the
ground. I started by cutting down the front baffles a 1/2" at a time.
It was getting better each time, but in the end, I had to remove the
front baffle plate completely on both #1 and #2 cylinder. Temps are
real close now with the hot weather in Kansas.
Thank You

I finally took to the skies this morning with a (as seems to be the
standard) very uneventful flight. The #1 CHT got warmer than I'd like
so I
didn't keep the power as high as I planned, but otherwise it flew great!
Lots of spectators and encouragement from family and the squadron mates
so
that made it that much more exciting.
One question for the group regarding the high CHT. I know it will drop
as
the engine breaks in some, but I have the standard kit baffle that
covers
the leading edge of the cylinder (on both sides). It seems that
reducing
the size some would help but I'd be open to ideas before I start hacking
away at it. The other temps were within reason (<400 with #1 pushing
435
and slightly above momentarily) so I'm hesitant to make any huge changes
to
the rest of the baffling or cowling without further data.
Thanks for all the help on-line, especially Tim Olsen, the process would
have taken a whole lot longer had I worked in a vacuum of information.

Don't know if any of you have considered cam locks vs hinges for your
cowling. Skybolt has adjustable camlocks for the RV10 and they have a
RV10 kit. The non adjustable camlocks would be a problem because they
would loosen and damage the cowling. With the adjustable one you can
keep them tight by adjusting them as they loosen.
If anyone is interested here is their web site. Look around until you
find the RV section. I'm just now installing mine. We'll see how well
it goes.

Wayne,
I used the Skybolt camlocks around the fuselage and they work great. I went
with the piano hinge to connect the upper and lower cowls along the
horizontal axis. I used the piano hinge because there are no curves along
the sides (pins easy to get in and out) and they makes for a "clean" look.

Bob,
I was able to get a 35mm film canister full from my local FBO for about
a $1 or 2. It doesn't take that much and a can will not only last you a
life time it will last a shop almost a life time as well. Just a side
note the stuff is really sticky and no it would come off your hands with
avgas.

Mark I did the same thing!! Adjustable camlock next to the fuselage and hinge on
the half separation. When I realized I was going to have to do a lot of reenforcing
the upper and lover half for the camlocks, I decided to go with the hinge.
Not a lot of room for the camlocks next to the valve covers .I bought the
RV-10 kit from Skybolt and didn't use but half of it. You might just want to
buy enough camlocks just to do the back half.
Finished everything, waiting on panel this week!!!!

Yea Sean that has been one of the hardest jobs. Finally took everything to a friends

booth, Sanded, then took it to paint. We are very happy with the results.

Does anybody on the list have an accurate drawing of the standard Van's
panel for the -10? I talked to Van's and they said there should be on on
the Van's Airforce website, but they only had the 8 and 9 or something
like that. If you have a drawing of the -10 (especially if you know from
experience that it is accurate), please e-mail it off the list.
A waterjet cutting company said it would be cheaper to cut the panel and
all of the cutouts out of a ractangle of aluminum than to just cut out
the...uh...cutouts...from an already cut out panel. Well, I think I got
that out right.

I swapped the probes as well as slightly lowering the front ramp and, oddly
enough, the #1 cylinder still reads higher even though it's now reading the
#3 cylinder. Obviously the probe is a little off. However, by climbing
faster (110-120 knots) I'm able to keep everything below 400 with a few
deviations on the #1 indication to 411.

Great news. Congratulations!
On the CHT, I was going to suggest swapping the probes. It's always best to
make sure you truly have a problem before solving it. Keep us posted on
this, as we have not seen this problem at all with the air ramps.

Here are some pictures from N585MR before and after the initial voyage
yesterday. No true RV-Grin shots, but I assure you it was there! I put
another 1.5 on it today and all is going great. I got the pictures as small
as possible, my apologizes if the e-mail is still a little large.
Regarding the high #1 CHT, I swapped the #1 and 3 CHT probes and it turns
out the sender must be a little off as it still showed #1 to be a little
hotter than the rest. I also trimmed the baffle slightly, climbed out
faster and all is good on the CHT gauge.
One lesson learned from yesterday was I have 3 EFIS displays, a great Garmin
stack and all I could find was the airspeed indication! New panel, new
instrument crosscheck. Today went much better although the Dynon hung up at
60 degrees of bank and never fully recovered. I have not installed the
updated software (firmware?) so hopefully that will help. I was able to
take the time to work the avionics much more effectively, even listened to
some tunes briefly.
Great machine, can't wait to fly it again.

I used the Skybolt camlocs on my RV-7. As I see it the advantage besides
adjusting for wear is adjusting for the thickness of the cowling. Being
a hand laid up fiberglass piece it is not a consistant thickness and the
adjustable camlocs make it easy to set up on the original installation.
I'm happy with thim so far but only have about 30 hours on them so far.
I have not installed the retainers for the outer part that locks into
the airframe yet because I'm still tweaking things.
