I just made a doubler plate for the Wheelen unit behind the baggage
compartment with nut plates on it for the ELT unit to attach to. I
actually put the ELT unit in the baggage compartment just to the left
close to the seat back at the first part of the baggage area so it's
kind of out of the way. The reason I put it there is because in case of
an accident, and I was somehow in a remote area, I would be able to
unhook it and take it with me or, with the type I have, it is also a
radio so I would be able to communicate. I had thought about hiding it
behind the back baggage wall area but thinking the worst thought if
somehow the back area was made inaccessible by the accident I wouldn't
be able to get at the unit.

John Stark does allow you to purchase the radio stack trays and
harnesses
from him, then credits you for that when you order the actual
instruments.
The only additional cost is the shipping. Just getting measurements for
the
height of your stack instruments, however, should be fine. You can make
the
angle that holds the trays later, or can use radiorax rails. I
personally
like to have the stack connected to the angle, and fasten it to the
panel
with screws from the front. This allows you to remove the panel without
taking out the radio stack (with all of its wiring going everywhere).
The
alternative for easy service is to make disconnects coming out the back
of
the stack, but that is a TON of wires, and a lot of them are shielded
(the
way Stark wires them up, at least), and I don=92t know the ramifications
of
using a disconnect on a bunch of shielded wires. I would check with
Stark
on that.
By the way, we use that same stack except the SL40 instead of the SL30,
and
we are putting the Sorcerer at the bottom of the stack as well. It=92s
a very
good setup.

G'day all,
I would like to finalise cutting the panel and subpanel for my avionics
stack, but want to delay the big bucks outlay for my proposed Garmin
stack
for a few months. Stack configuration is GMA340/GNS430/SL30/GTX327.
Does anyone see any problem with finishing the panel cutting and
installing
the tubes/racks without having the actual avionics? More importantly,
where
can you buy the mounting tubes/hardware without buying the avionics?
cheers,

After over 240 flying hours on N256H, a lot of which has been IFR,
including
some really hard IFR, we really like having the radio stack to the left
of
center. It makes it very easy to see and to push buttons when you
don=92t
want to be reaching too far out in turbulence. This also greatly
simplifies
the installation because of the center rib. Cutting a hole for the
stack in
the sub-panel is a must. We just reinforced it with aluminum angle on
top,
bottom and sides, similar to how the plans suggest.

Hi Ron,
I am using the exact same stack as yours. I am using the radio shop at
JAARS to purchase and layout the panel. How are you handling the depth
of
the GNS430/SL30 in the panel? I want the stack to be exactly in the
middle
which conflicts with the brace and also the sub-panel is only 10 or so
inches from the main panel. I have some thoughts but I would like to
hear
yours or anyone elses also. Thanks

With

Hi All,
While installing my ailerons I noticed drawing 4 on page 21-8 (this is
the
drawing that calls out the hardware used on the outboard aileron hinge)
shows two normal washers and one thin washer in between the outboard
aileron
hinge bracket and the bearing. Looking at mine this is not enough
shimming
to allow the bolt to tighten the hinge bracket down onto the =93bearing
ball=94.
I had to add one more washer to the stack, to get it to chinch up.
Otherwise
the bolt would just turn inside the bearing hole rather than the bear
doing
its job.
Has anyone else seen this or is this just one of those things everybody
knows? I didn=92t find anything in the archives.

The paint shop is almost complete and I installed the ailerons yesterday for the
second time.
My recommendation is put just a bolt through the outer hinge and install the inner
hinge and control pushrod first. Next look at where the bearing is resting
between the outer aileron hinges and estimate the number of washers needed on
each side of the bearing. Mine required 2 normal washers on each side of the
bearing. Note that the bearing mount will easily move laterally a bit to accomodate
small changes. Its more important
that the aileron hinge arms are not preloaded than perfectly centering the bearing
between the hinge arms.
Then check for gross errors as Jesse stated.

My recommendation is to stick with Van's design until late in the flight testing.
This will give the engine time to break in and time to list and think about
the problems that need to be solved. IF you have a heat problem it can be addressed
later with no more effort than making the mods now.
At Vans Homecoming one gentlemen walked around the 7-8 RV-10's taking a poll on
those with the tunnel heat problem. Only 2 out of 8 stated it was a problem yet
it was a highly discussed item on the matronics list giving one the impression
everybody had the problem.

The only thing in the finish kit I have found to be Lycoming specific is the engine
mount, spinner and the cowl. Be advised the nose strut mounts to the engine
mount so that's some engineering left for you to figure out. The firewall forward
kit is almost ALL Lycoming specific though.

With your Eggenfellner FWF kit, you will get the main engine mount, but
will still need the nose wheel strut and attaching hardware. Depending
on the cowl you choose, the standard from Vans, or the James cowl from
Eggenfellner. Everything else is still the same so far.
Give me a call directly and we can discuss it, as I have the list of
what I left out at home.

Hey y'all!
Van's finish kit is listed for "I/O-540 Lycoming engines only".
My question is: What would I need to add/drop from the "finish kit" if I
want to use an Egg Subaru?
Thanks!

Thanks, for this, Deems!
For those of us who are not up to speed on the IO-540 designators, this
one is an angle valve. Also it has channel Chrome cylinders...

On all the fuel injected engines I flew behind, the fuel flow meter was connected
to the spider on the top of the engine. To start the engine you turned on
the fuel pump until you got a fuel flow indication then started it. With the
electronic engine moniters the fuel flow is measured at the flowscan sensor in
the tunnel. How do you know how much to prime when starting?

Gary,
The Electronics International Fuel Flow Transducer is located just before the
spider, not in the tunnel. When I called them, they told me to NOT put it in
the tunnel! They do not use the Flow Scan Transducer. They make their own.
Nice unit.

Hi Guys,
My neighbor is selling his brand new (still in crate) Monty Barret built
experimental IO-540-X (A1A5).ser# 8686 It has all the paperwork, dyno
data and all accessories except the prop governor. $30K. $28K minus the
accessories. It's a great deal, if you haven't checked new IO-540 prices
lately, especially a Barrett engine. I'd buy it if I could...

Not so fast, it all depends... If it started out life as an O-540-A1A5
then it's a parallel valve engine (originally rated at 250HP @ 2575) and
a good match for an RV-10. If it started out as an IO-540-A1A5 then
it's an angle valve engine (originally rated at 290HP @ 2575 RPM) and
won't physically fit on an RV-10.
Note that Barrett lists 2 variants of the IO-540-X on their web site
that are VERY different: the "Light Weight IO-540-X" is based on a
parallel valve engine, the "Heavy Hitter IO-540-X" is based on an angle
valve engine.
It would be easy to identify what this is either by looking at the valve
covers or calling Barrett, but based on the information posted so far,
there's no way to tell.
Bob

It *is* an angle valve.. as I understand, not the best fit for a -10...
