Subject: | Re: Vans Alternator |
My 60 amp "Van model" stopped working at 80 hrs, while on a long X
country trip. Had to leave it in Atlantic City and drive to my
destination. Ordered the "new" 60 amp from Van overnight and the FBO
in Atlantic City installed it while I drove the rest of the way.
Hope this one does better as I understand my original alternator was
a rebuilt one.

If anyone is ordering the FWF kit from Van's, I recommend you replace
the standard 60amp alt with the deluxe model. The stock one is just an
auto alternator where the deluxe one is a Plane Power alternator at a
very attractive reduced price. From Van's it is $375 Plane Power's list
price is $569.

Hey Rob,
I have just done the same thing and agree with you completely about the bolts,
very difficult! I have a question for you: The forward brace of the LG bracket
shows fastening to the floor by 2 AN3-5A bolts but the picture and description
gives no clue as to what and how you fasten it (see P. 29-21). I have gone
through the plan book and can find no reference or even instructions for drilling.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

right (IMHO). I took my Columbus Day and removed the gear brackets, fwd floor
pans (only a few rivets in each to hold them) and the covers for the control
sticks that screws to the front of the seat area. Then I vacuumed, cleaned,
primed the areas, laid the Super SoundProofing with Sticky Stuff, and then reinstalled
everything. Total time spent was all day, 12 hours. Hardest part was
getting the bolts out of the holes that go through the spar areas. Theres
not a whole lot of room for fingers and tools, so you just have to work at it.
Backing the bolts out was VERY tedious. I took a few pics and will try to post
some.
Oh, another thing. If you are shorted a few snap bushings and dont want to have to pay Vans or someone else shipping on some $.07 bushings, do what I did on the bushing itself is the name of the company, HEYCO, in Toms River, NJ. After realizing that my local supplier didnt carry them and the minimum order was in the 1000s of parts, I went to the website, www.heyco.com. Heyco has a sampling service where you can type in the part number that you need (up to 6 I think) and tell them how many you would like to sample. Not to be greedy, I asked for 6 of two different sizes and they arrived in the mail today. I also asked for a catalog to check their other goodies.

You need to remove the gear mounts and check all the bolt holes that hold
them in as all the side holes on mine were F%$#@ up so I had to enlarge and
put bigger bolts in. Other QB builders have reported this! Its usualy the R
side only.
So worth tacking out just for that.

Anyone know what's actually failing on these alternators? From my various vehicles
and several
million miles of driving I've never had an auto alternator failure. Perhaps it's
an installation
issue (i.e. heat or vibration).

I think it works great with the NAV antenna in the tip. For the NAV antenna
installation, I connected the antenna to a piece of aluminum angle and the
angle to the end rib, instead of making it removeable with the wingtip. I
saw this done on somebody's site and thought it looked like a good idea.

Chris,
Info is in the second issue of 2005. Great article! Thought I might
do the same but don't think it will work well with the Archer nav antennas
in the tips. If you have a different opinion let me know.

I think it works great with the NAV antenna in the tip. For the NAV
antenna
installation, I connected the antenna to a piece of aluminum angle and
the
angle to the end rib, instead of making it removeable with the wingtip.
I
saw this done on somebody's site and thought it looked like a good idea.

Chris,
Info is in the second issue of 2005. Great article! Thought I
might
do the same but don't think it will work well with the Archer nav
antennas
in the tips. If you have a different opinion let me know.

Sorry, I don't have a picture. I imagine it could move a little bit, but
not a whole lot more than the antenna flat on the bottom surface of the
wingtip.

Hey Jesse -
Do you have a pic of that installation? I'm curious how rigid that
mounting is? Does the antenna flop around inside the tip?

Do NOT try this without help, at least the 2 inside ribs ones in each
half of HS. It will not go well. Your arms are not long enough to buck
and rivet properly at same time. Wish I'd looked at John J's site, this
step, about a day sooner!!!!

We use Aerotrim, (305) 864-3336. It doesn=92t look like much, but works
great. We get it without the indicator, just the servo, and pay just

The really disappointing thing about this is that I could not find the
contents of the IO-540 FWF kit listed anywhere on Van's website. The
Master relay, starter relay and Battery as listed on their web site as
included, ARE NOT provided in the 540 kit nor could I find any options
to change the alternator. Returning the alternator for a
refund/replacement from Oz is a pain in the agates.

(Any newbie out there with a number higher than 620?)? Van's has 49
completions listed on it's site. Anyone completed but not sent their
note

Afterthought on not remember which issue an RVator article was in. I put a spreadsheet
together of RVAtor articles from 2001 on (although I haven't updated it
with the one this week). Eventually, I'm going to move it to a public page,
at the moment, it's in the RV yahoogroups file section.
