Unfortunately, almost everything in that kit is useless and doesn't
apply to the -10. You will have to improvise most of it.

seal the letters with anything (clearcoat?) This looks like an excellent

Wow, what an overwhelming response! We hit 53 people already
tonight (106 parts) so the machining quote should be
nice and low. It's going to be a busy time packaging and
shipping them though. I saved a few feet of bubblewrap
from something I got this week in the mail, but I think
I'm going to need quite a bit more than that. ;)
Looks like I'll have to start scrounging around work for
the next few days and have them save me all that they can.
Thanks everyone for the kind words. I'll keep the list
open until 8am Thursday a.m. and then I'll call in the
total to be ordered. It's almost a shame to see someone
not building these for a product, with the response
we got. It sure does indicate that perhaps they should
think about doing something better at the factory though,
if this many people want to jump on something better that
quick. But you know how that kind of thing goes over.
Just keep sending your info if you haven't.

Thanks Chris, I added you to my list.
Just a reminder to anyone in AU or NZ that is ordering these through
me, make sure you tell me and not just Tim. If I don't know about you
when Tim and I compare lists it will get dropped if I can't contact you
before the order is submitted.
I am paying Tim on your behalf so he doesn't have the headaches and
then you will pay me after you have received it. Essentially Tim is
getting these for me and then I'm selling/shipping them to you. I'll
ship them out and email you with the final cost. No one will pay me
back until you receive them. As of right now I have the following:
John Dunne
Indran Chelvanayagam
Neil Colliver
Chris Darcy

Good news, everyone...
Today I installed the axle extensions that my friend made from my
drawing and they worked out perfectly. I have some photos from
the install posted here:
http://www.myrv10.com/N104CD/upgrades/20070118/index.html#Installation_of_new_extensions
Now that I know they work, I'm going to do something stupid and
since some people found high machining costs, I'm going to coordinate
a group order for extensions that look like these. I had at least
2 quotes come back with costs significantly lower than what other people
were saying. My earlier drawing might actually be more expensive to
make than the final product drawing too. I'll have to re-quote it to
see if pricing will be any lower.
My present quote that I'd go on was: $17.75ea @ quantity 40 and
$24.50ea @ quantity 20. (20 pairs and 10 pairs respectively)
Now, what I'm going to do it this: If you want these extensions
for your plane, I'm only planning to have one run made up, so get them
now. Let me know by Wednesday night, and Thursday a.m. I'll order
them from the machining company and get the hardware on it's
way to me. They need to get the aluminum stock, so there will be
a small delay before they start making them.
You do not need to send payment right away...Yes, I know, that's
stupid, but I'm planning to write a check for well over $1000 to
cover the production, but only if the buyers are willing to commit
to paying for them.
What you'll get:
1 PAIR of Axle entensions, all drilled and tapped, 3-3/8" long so
they don't require the large flat washer. They should directly
replace the original part. You'll also get (3) AN5-6A bolts,
so you have one as a spare, for bolting them to the axle nut.
You'll also get (3) MS24693C298 screws for the outer ends, that
will be 1/4" longer than original so they don't back out and fall
off as easily (mine almost came out...use loctite!) And, I'm
going to send you (3) MS24665-292 cotter pins, and (3)
MS24665-362 cotter pins, so you have all of the hardware required
to attach them.
Your job: Drill your existing holes on the axle nuts out to 5/16"
and deburr (I deburred mine today because I miss all the deburring
so much ;) ) Then assemble the AN5 bolt/washer to the extension and
torque. Then, use a #40 drill through the guide hole and drill
out the hole and the bolt to #40. Pin them together with the small
cotter pins, install the axle nuts and pin with the large pins.
Then secure the fairing with the 1/4" stainless machine screw.
Since this is something I'm not doing for profit, I'm going to
make it easy on myself. They'll all be picked up at the same
time, and I'll throw them all into USPS Priority mail at the
same time. I'll split the costs of everything evenly, and round
any costs up to the next highest dollar. When all is said and
done, I'll tell you if the total with shipping is any higher than
my expectations...which would be between $45 and $55 per pair,
all complete to your door with the hardware.
One exception: Since this isn't for-profit in any way, I'm going
to make it easy on myself and limit it to the US continental 48
states only so I can use USPS Priority mail.
Again, I'll only be doing this group order one time, so if you want
them, now's the time. After this order, if for some reason I'm
crazy enough to do it again, I'd add on extra cost for the time, and
it might be harder to get a good list of people together to keep
the price down. If for some reason we can't get 10 people for
this order, I won't bother, but my gut feeling is that we'll probably
easily make the 20 pair (quantity 40) level. I just want to do this
because after installing them I know they worked well for me, and
it'll keep you all from spending a fortune on one-offs from your
local machinist. In the spirit of "no up front money" that
we have today, you can send your payment either via paypal
or by check after you get them. I know everyone will pay up, because
we're all nice people and if you don't, I'll tell the list on you. ;)
If you pay by paypal though, add a little to cover the fees that
they charge. Tips are not required, but will be accepted if you're
just so happy after getting them that you really want to. ;)
If the price for any reason looks like it'll be over $60, I will not
proceed without contacting everyone who got on the list first.
Email me at my email address if you want to get on the list.

Tim for everyone in Europe and further East I will help with the
packaging and sending. Just send me the list of people and I will make
sure it gets out to them. I think there was one from Germany, and I do
not know how many others, but I can help.

Subject: | Baggage door channel |
"The book" has you machine countersink the upper baggage door seal
channel for the platenut attach rivets, but it's very thin (0.025, I
think). I tried to squeeze a dimple in there with the separated dies
from my pop-rivet dimple, and just messed it up. Countersinking was
worse - when I tried to get deep enough, I enlarged the hole.
Here's an approach that works:
Drill #40 the rivet holes as instructed, but continue all the way
through the back of the piece. Enlarge the holes in the back to 9/64"
to pass the nail head of the pop rivet dimpler. Insert the nail a
little way, slip on the female die, and continue as usual.

Tim, please add me to the list. I was gonna get the really nice ones,
but the price difference is too convincing.
One suggestion - it might be best if the transition in diameter were
made with a generous radius ( like even 1/4" or more), rather than a
"sharp" inside corner.
I can't tell from your photos what the radius is.
Thanks a bunch for doing this! You continue to be one hell of an
asset to the community.

All joking aside, I'm thinking about enlarging the access hole a bit
more and driving solid rivets using a big drift punch as bucking
bar... I really don't want a Big hole back there, though. We'll see
when the replacement part gets here.
I used the original to verify the dimpling technique, may use it to
try to set a rivet or 2 for practice.
Comments, anybody? What am I missing?

Hi Tim,
My time spent estimating tells me that these are costing $11.00 each
after the initial set up costs... so that an order of 150 pieces
should wind up around 14.50 each... or $29.00 per pair... but I'd
imagine that you're really going to be looking at ordering between
250 and 300 pieces by the time the dust settles on this. For
example,I think I'll be ordering two pair, as Nick Gautier is
building around the corner from me and I just need to confirm that he
wants them as well.
I am concerned that you'll be spending a big chunk of your time
shipping these out as the list grows and don't think any of us want
you to have to go through all that. Perhaps the manufacturer is set
up for UPS shipping and for a nominal fee they can handle that for
you. I'd be happy to forgo some of the savings from this amazing
group buy to save you that time and effort.... or you could drop ship
a batch to me and a few others around the country and we could split
up the work of getting them all out.

No problem Jeff. I've had a bunch of offers of help, but what gets
me is that if I shipped them somewhere for reshipping, that just
increases the cost...so I'm trying to keep it low. You're probably
right on the pricing...the old quote for 40 was $17.75, so it's
likely going to be lower now by a ways. I'm up to 90 people, for
180 units. At $15 that's $2700 to spend on the machining. ;)
It's far more quantity than I figured it would be, but it's
do-able. As long as people are helping with the international
stuff, that makes it easier. The reason I went USPS is because
you get the box for free and it's a flat-rate charge that should
be identical. I doubt that the manufacturer will want to deal
with shipping, but for this one-shot thing, I don't mind.
We'll just see how good it all gets. I know some people are
wanting these a.s.a.p, so I'm going to hold to a Thursday
8am CST deadline and then just have some made up. At that point
at least I'll know how much hardware to order. Glad I didn't
do that this a.m. or I'd be WAAAY short.
You know, this would make a heck of a lot more sense if I was
still building and needed a pair. Call me a sucker, but
you guys have just grown on me over the past 3 years. ;)

You only get the left side....at least that is all I got. The directions
say to run the wires up and around on the right side. For me it does not
matter since I got the interior done by Abbey, but I put the left side panel
in anyway.

Tim, throw me on the list.
I would also like to add my services to this very nice offer. For our
brethren in OZ and NZ that may want to jump in on this, I will be
willing to act as a proxy for you on two conditions. First you have
been present and active on the list so I recognize you, and second I
reserve the right to limit the number of people I proxy this to.
This is only for Australia and New Zealand. If someone else wants to
handle the UK or another part of the world more power to them. Oceania
is enough for me. :-) So if you are in one of those two locations and
want a set let me know and I will ask Tim to add them to my order. You
will pay whatever I pay + the cost of shipping to your part of the world
and you can pay me via paypal also.
Of course this is assuming Tim doesn't have a problem with it.

Wednesday p.m.
Good news, everyone...
Today I installed the axle extensions that my friend made from my
drawing and they worked out perfectly. I have some photos from
the install posted here:
http://www.myrv10.com/N104CD/upgrades/20070118/index.html#Installation_o
f_new_extensions

Not that it's a bad suggestion, but I'd really like to just
get these things made and get them in people's hands.
I just weighed one, and it looks like 3.6oz each, so it
should easily fit into the USPS flat boxes and it's
I think only $4.05 or at most $4.85 for shipping then. That
way everyone has them, and they feel happy to have spent
the money because they actually received them. With today's
issues, reminded by the recent D2AV debacle, I'd rather
see them out the door and not have anyone waiting too long.
Just saw Symphony aircraft closed up and left it's deposited
buyers holding nothing.....the assets of the company won't
cover the deposits they'd owe. So since Sh-tuff happens,
I'd like to just see everyone satisfied a.s.a.p.
BTW: We're up to 97 people so far.
I spoke with the machining company today to verify the design
with him since I changed it a tad from the original quote,
and to stress that I wanted 3/4" threaded depths. They're
doing it on CNC and they may buy some special taps to do the
threads that deep in aluminum. I asked about leadtime and
he thinks about 2 weeks would do it. Price wise, he
said the big drop was 20 to 40 quantity, and while it may drop
more, it probably won't drop much from the $17.75 previously
quoted. Disappointing to hear, but understandable since
they gain the efficiency by doing a certain quantity for
machine setup, but beyond that the efficiencies get smaller and
smaller. I'll doublecheck with another place in town too.
As for hardware, from ACS I can get all the hardware except I
it looks like I can quite get 300 of the stainless screws today...
so unless they get stock before they ship (they're supposed to)
there may be some that can only go out with 2 screws, instead
of the 3. I just added 1 to each hardware item to guarantee
if you broke/damaged/lost one you'd have a spare. I'm sure
that won't be a deal killer for anyone though....one screw.
But, if they get them in stock, I'll get them here.
So we're looking good.

Hey Tim,
When you get a price fot the axle extensions nailed down, let us know.
I'll send you my check ASAP. No need for you to hang your but on the line
financially.
Tim let us know what the total estimated costs will be not only for the part
but the S&H...could be as much as the parts themselves?

Right now, for US based people, I'm thinking that it should
end up being in the $45-50 USD range when all is said and done.
For those overseas, people like Dan and Mike will work with
you to come up with an economical way to do it, so it adds
the least cost. I've never shipped to the UK, NZ, AU, or
anywhere like that, so I have no idea myself.
I don't want any checks sent until at LEAST the time that I
have a 100% solid manufacture cost and shipping cost
and supplies. Then I should be able to give an exact
amount and at that point I'll be happy to get checks
coming this way. Hopefully everyone can get a check out
within the week that they receive them at least.

Subject: | Countersink W-1006E? |
I have a quick question about the "extra hole" referenced on page 13-2 in t
he W-1006E part. Should this hole be countersunk? I could not find anythi
ng in a future section of the wing assembly that indicates that a rivet wil
l be going there. Is there another purpose for the hole or is it simply to
orientate the part as described on 13-2? Thanks in advance.=0A=0A--Shawn

Subject: | Baggage door channel |
I just rememberred what I did about the countersinking for the nutplates. I
too felt that the material was too thin to countersink so what I did was to
make a piece of hardwood that fit inside the the channel. I thin clamped it
down so it would not move then drilled the #40 rivet holes and then
countersank them. The idea being that the holes in the hardwood keep the
countersinking bit alighned. There was no issue with the bit wondering and
the depth of the countersink did not blow out the hole.
I reshaped the back of the channel for the smallest die on the pnuematic
riveter.
It worked out great for me. Turn down the valve on the compressor hose so
the pneumatic goes slow because if you are out of alignment, you ruin your
part.

Subject: RV10-List: RV-10 Axle Extension Group Order - Reply by Wednesday
p.m.
Good news, everyone...
Today I installed the axle extensions that my friend made from my
drawing and they worked out perfectly. I have some photos from
the install posted here:
http://www.myrv10.com/N104CD/upgrades/20070118/index.html#Installation_of_ne
w_extensions

Looking for input and suggestions on plumbing a fuel return.
I'm planning ahead and installing it in preparation for a future electronic
fuel system.
And farther out the diesel engine................. ;-)
Both systems will require a fuel return to the tank.
With the Subaru's(Eggenfellner) needing this now I assume it's being done
already.
They have a good instruction page on how to install a return in -6A on their
site.

Eric:
I am still in the wing section and bought the same fittings for the vent
line. Placed them in the left tank and ran the tube 1/2 way down thru
the baffles. That way the return fuel will cool and dump into the
middle of the tank. I'd be glad to send a pic of where I put the exit
if you want one.
Does any body have any information on roll trim? Necessary? Got
asked that question and have not run across any information yet. I know
a lot of the RV 's have heavy wings and require a trim tab on one of the
ailerons. How is that different? When and where should that be
installed?
Thanks

With 30 gallon tanks that are pretty long, the -10 sometimes requires
a bit of Aileron trim, and it varies depending on your passengers and
fuel. I've found it much more necessary than on the Sundowner I flew,
because those tanks didn't go out from center as far. Shorter and
longer across the cord. It's a worthwhile option on the -10 though.
Easy to install. just mounts on one wing access plate and moves the
aileron pushrod with a bias spring and servo arrangement.

Why doesn't fuel management to maintain similar levels in the left and
right tank work?

Anyone have a schematic on how Airflow's Pump/Filter combo bypasses if
clogged/failed?
I've written them and will post reply; hopefully someone has it on hand
already.

Van's Aircraft Electric Aileron Trim Kit Complete servo and spring bias

The ray allen servo mounts on one of the access panels of the wing and a
spring bias system applies the trim force directly to the aileron
control push rod.

Tim,
It seems there may an opportunity to get additional information with all this activity.
I would love to get a list of builder's websites if they are willing.
I believe you have around thirty listed on your site. You've now heard from
a hundred of them. Just a thought.
Thanks so much for everything.

I'm not saying that wouldn't help, but whereas some people switch
tanks back and forth a lot, some don't, and I do notice the -10
seems to get a heavy wing pretty easily based on loading
and fuel. So the easiest is just to compensate for both passengers
and fuel. But, you do have a point that proper fuel management
helps to reduce the reliance. I still recommend it though.

Time to call it a day. Pretty much spent a lot of time
returning emails and making lists today. You guys are
pretty overwhelming. ;) You know, I had wondered if we
could get 20 people together to make the cost low. As
it turns out, today we're at 125....PEOPLE. That's 250
machined extensions. I am truly amazed. That's almost
1/5th of the current kit sales, all wanting parts within
a little over 24 hours. Total costs with my local sales
tax will come to just about $4700 at this point, if the
quote stays the same. And after that, there's bolts
and shipping and stuff. Whoda thunkit? But, RV guys
are about the most reliable people I've met, so as much
as it gets spooky, it's gonna happen. Still, no checks
should be sent yet. Let's get the total costs figured
out first. With a group this large, I'll have to
quick get an estimate on all the packaging stuff and
just make sure it all gets covered. I'm hoping that
a large number of people like Paypal, as it sure beats
going to the bank and writing a deposit slip up for
125 checks. ;) I checked on paypal fees and if I read
it right, it's 2.9%+ $.30, so it only adds about $1.75
roughly.
So there's about 36 hours left and I close the doors on
the deal and start the gears of procurement and production.
To you guys this may be a cool way to get some parts....
for me it's turning into a mind-blowing experience. ;)
I do appreciate all the offers of help. I just so far
think if I can just get all of you to send your mailing
addresses in so I can complete my spreadsheet fields,
it should go pretty smoothly.
Sorry that they told me to expect a 2 week timeframe
for manufacture. I'll see if I can get that reduced
if possible.
Thanks for the support for your positive comments.
