Well, the last winter we lived in MN, we went 37 days with the temp never
getting above 0. (Then it got all the way up to +2.) They only closed the
schools one day - when the wind-chill hit -90! Yep, we moved south the next
summer.

Subject: | what do you call yourself to ATC? |
In my Pietenpol, I usually call in "November X-Ray 899 Juliet Papa".
Invariably ATC will ask what type of Experimental I am. They are so
used to high speed experimentals like RV's, they want to know what kind
of Experimental is crawling across their radar screen at 58 knots.

You've got it right. "Experimental <N-Number>, 10 miles East at 6500'
inbound with Oscar" For filing, I had been filing HXB/G, but now that
I hear "RV10" is in the system, RV10/G should work too. Usually
ATC asks what kind of plane we are, when they see the speeds we're
making....then I tell them I'm an RV10.

Subject: | what do you call yourself to ATC? |
For filing purposes, I've had good luck tell the briefer on the phone I'm a
RV-10/G, however on DUATS RV10 is still not a viable option for some reasons
(just double checked this morning). I'll often pick RV-6 then write in the
comments I'm really a 10 although that has never really worked for some
reason.
Does anyone have any info on the FAA updating their system to enter RV-10
online?

YOU'RE A SCHMUCK!!! I mean really man you really are a
SCHMUCK!!! Braggin' not only on the heat but the

are better off left unsaid! Hope you feel good about
yourself...and you probably do...as all of us would too if
we lived there too. But that really is LOW and to me you
have an RV-10 and I get to go work on my '89 nissan pickup
restoration project in my 5 degree garage today here in
Michigan.
But, I'm between jobs, every day is a Saturday, wife just
brought me in breakfast... negotiating a position in San

Subject: | what do you call yourself to ATC? |
I hear some call "experimental", a few call "red experimental" and most call
"rv-whatever". I don't know what is officially the right way, but most, in
my experience, say the actual model of airplane, not experimental. I have
heard of several cases where ATC wanted to know about and chat about "that
4-seat RV" and one case where they actually asked the pilot to change
frequencies to chat about the plane, especially when hitting ground speeds
over 185Kts on descent into an airport.

Thanks to Ralph Capen for putting me on to two sources for non-
magnetic hardware. He has been happy with Aircraft Supply in Dallas,
the predecessor of a company Called "Action Aerospace" (214-637-3598)
although they have changed name and ownership and do not have a web
site. Ralph also identified GAHco (http://www.gen-aircraft-
hardware.com). These folks have all I need and more, and a helpful
web site.
Big thanks also to Albert Gardner, who is sending a demo kit of
Click Bond fasteners for my education and gratification.
What a group!

That is definitely a sign of the times....whoda thunk it, the new
builders don't know James...
He was this guy we all once new, who was building a 10, did not know
what spell check was, liked to post to tell everyone what he did and
also take a billion photo's, had a webcam setup in the garage so we
could spy on him...then he up and disappeared on us, sold his kit,
dropped the back seat idea and converted to one of them there sports
models of the RV type. Must have had a mid-life crisis, you know the
type, gets a sports car, dyes his hair and trolls for hanger chicks?
Has anyone heard from him and his progress on the 7? Because he is not
posting on the RV-list either.

James...A pure legend in the RV web posting history...Actually talked to him a
few times and a really nice guy on the phone. Had his own company but never worked
on anything but the RV-10. We had his kids B-day parties, knew when he was
sick....sorta like a one man big brother show. He could misspell words so bad
that you could not tell what they were....At least you can tell what Deems is
trying to type!! :)
I think his wife finally found the checkbook and saw how much he was spending and
put the kabash...not to be confused with Quicks Draws KABONG on the whole idea....he
still needed to learn how to fly once he finished up the RV so maybe
that might have had something to do with his demise as well.

For the archivally (or is that archaically) impaired young kids on this
list today, James McClow was builder extraordinaire of kit #191 and
promptly sold it to Jim Riley when his "supportive" wife went home to
Vermont at Thanksgiving 2005 (and cut him off). he was pationate,
hedstrong, reelentless, grammarically unik and bold enuf to have a live
motion controlled webcam in his garage so you could watch what could be
accomplished with passion, pliers, long screwdriver and a good 24 oz.
hammer. Oh, yeh, he always built in shorts and tshirt just like Tim -
only it was from Seminole, FL.
In the early days of build, back during the era of the covered wagons
and Indian attacks the only other progress to watch was Randy Debauw and
John Hilger building the first "By the Plans" flying kit which that
young upstart - Tim Olson, in the frozen north with "Sergeant Preston of
the Yukon" would post with a string and tin can for lost travelers
looking for the clear path to nirvana (not the musical group).

Bob was a bit off...it was actually 71 yesterday and shooting for about 74 today.
I saw no bikini clad women but there was an abundance of flip flops which for
classic pump fans, sucks.
For those of you stuck in the cooler climates...feel lucky!!!! My West Systems
epoxy pot life is much worse than yours..I only have 30 minutes of work time where
your mix should last all night!! ;)
This is the time of year we like to play outside...July and August are just plain
hot..not like Airzona hot but still hot. Oh well....out to water the lawn.
Is it true you can toss a glass of water in the air and make snow when it's real
cold like that?

My hot coffee in a insulated mug started to freeze in about 30 minutes when I was
working on my workshop Sunday. The cold isn't bad, it's the wind that really
sucks! I won't even try to start my diesel truck in this weather without a
preheat. It will start without it, it just won't be happy about it. I'll still
take it over the Texas heat. The Super Bowl would have been a much more interesting
game if they would have had it in Green Bay. Ice Bowl II

Gary, When you say 'the fuel servo' what are you referring to? I've
installed mine in the tunnel in the appropriate Van's designated
location. I vaguely recall reading something in the JPI sensor
installation information about it being installed between some
components, but their installation documentation (from what I can infer)
assumes that it's being installed as an add on to an existing certified
aircraft. where the installation usually needs to happen forward of the
firewall. Who @ OP told you this? They have some new people that may be
good at their particular tasks but not necessarily @ building an
airplane. Off the top of my head I can't for the life of me think of why
leaving it in its present position shouldn't work. The amount of fuel
that passes through the transducer is the same if placed there vs.
further forward.
just my $.02 I'd be interested in learning what you find.

It's not uncommon for many of the engine monitor vendors to suggest
the location upstream of the fuel pumps and servo. It is generally
considered more accurate but installs have shown that Van's location is
just as good. One of the arguments have always been the heat the
transducer would have to endure in the engine compartment but that has
also been shown to not make a difference. I plan on installing near the
servo.

Finally, someone asked the question. I always thought James was a guy who
had been building a -10 then up and died and left the group in deep
depression. This must have happened right before I got on the list, which
was just about the time of the mass exodus from the yahoo list that I heard
so many horror stories about in the beginning. OK, so now I know.

It is not Bush's
fault!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is the people who kept voting for him.
As I drive my Toyota Prius, I am just amazed at the Cadillac Escalades
driving around with no plates because the car was just recently purchased.
We share the world and the resources, we shouldn't think that just because
we can afford to have the most wasteful things we should use them up.
Think about the kids, then think about what left of your life.
I still have hopefully forty more years. I think we have a real war that is
brewing and it has nothing to do with oil, religion or politcal views.
I think I we are going to get to see some real BIG changes. Where is my
Hydrogen powerred RV10??
If it flew slower we could make zeplins fly next to us for a constant source
of fuel.

It's a HOT 68 here in Tulsa, just about warm enough to finish melting
off the 6 inches of ice and 14 inches of snow we had 2 weeks ago. I
haven't seen the white stuff last this long on the ground in about 20
years. We're thinking about going camping this weekend. :)

Bob was a bit off...it was actually 71 yesterday and shooting for about
74 today. I saw no bikini clad women but there was an abundance of flip
flops which for classic pump fans, sucks.
For those of you stuck in the cooler climates...feel lucky!!!! My West
Systems epoxy pot life is much worse than yours..I only have 30 minutes
of work time where your mix should last all night!! ;)
This is the time of year we like to play outside...July and August are
just plain hot..not like Airzona hot but still hot. Oh well....out to
water the lawn. Is it true you can toss a glass of water in the air and
make snow when it's real cold like that?

I remember a TV story a few years back about a family that was going thru
some hard times. Seems the father was about to be laid off from a Ford or GM
plant in Michigan. They were interviewing the wife in her front yard as she
leaving for the market. There was a new VW Vanagon, a newer Mercedes Benz in
her driveway as she got into her Volvo and left.
Something wrong with that picture TOO. KABONG Do Not Archive

OP sent me to JPI who responded to me with "follow the manual". I asked
again if It would work in the tunnel. No reply yet.
I did misspeak though. The manual wants it between the engine fuel pump and
the servo if there are no return lines.

You folks up over should note that we had a cold snap here downunder
during the last 24 hours, with the temperature plummeting to 60F!
We're expecting a cloudless sunny day at around 79F today and hopefully
by the weekend it will be back up into the 90's. Great weather if you

Subject: | Re: Fuel flow transducer |
JPI is known for not being particularly responsive to experimental
aircraft. So you may be a while in getting a response. I suppose that by
putting it between the engine driven fuel pump and the servo, that you
are measuring the flow a step closer to the actual detonation, and any
flow restrictions/problems due to the engine driven pump might be
registered with the sensor in that location. But if the engine is
supposed to burn 11 gph at a certain altitude and power setting, I cant'
see where measuring the flow on the other side of the engine driven
fuel pump would make a difference. There's only one line that connects
them, and if the amount of fuel flowing is different on one side of the
pump or the other, there's got to be a leak in the fuel delivery system.

I am trying to determine the best way to finish the inside of the engine
cowling. I would like to protect the fiberglass from absorbing oil and would
like to be able to easily clean it. Also just want it to look nice when
showing it off. I have considered using the PPG 2-part epoxy primer I am
using inside the cabin.
Tim - you used some heat shielding material - would you do the same again?
What is the material and it's source.
I would appreciate all suggestions.

I talked with both FAA and others, and Van's has to submit the info to the
FAA, then all the rest of the flight plan companies can pick the designation off

I bugged Van's about it several months ago, but not sure I got anyone there

Maybe all the other list users can prod Van's to do the necessary (and easy)

I think there were a multitude of things that got Good Ole James in trouble.
1. The web cam in the garage
2. The web cam in the HOUSE
3. The two hurricanes in rapid succession
4. The lack of a pilots license
5. The minor problem of a business without the license.
Other than that he was fun.

today, James McClow was builder extraordinaire of kit #191 and promptly sold
it to Jim Riley when his "supportive" wife went home to Vermont at
Thanksgiving 2005 (and cut him off). he was pationate, hedstrong,

it was from Seminole, FL.
In the early days of build, back during the era of the covered wagons and
Indian attacks the only other progress to watch was Randy Debauw and John
Hilger building the first "By the Plans" flying kit which that young upstart

Marcus,
I talked with both FAA and others, and Van's has to submit the info to the
FAA, then all the rest of the flight plan companies can pick the designation off
the FAA list.
I bugged Van's about it several months ago, but not sure I got anyone there
to do anything.
Maybe all the other list users can prod Van's to do the necessary (and easy)
paperwork with the FAA!

I flowed out some epoxy and brushed it on all over the cowl to give it
a smooth surface that would wipe up good. Then I covered the cowl
with sticky backed aluminum foil that Van's sells. It comes
something like 3' wide, and I ordered maybe 6-8' of it, so I
could do the whole cowl. I would definitely do it again. Randy
learned the hard way that it gets awfully hot next to the exhaust
on the cowl sides, so he quick put some in on his. I would
recommend doing at least some areas right away. I know I did far
more than I needed to, but I thought rather than have edges
all over that could peel up, I may be better off heat shielding
the whole thing and having it cover most of the lower cowl.

Deems, the standard mechanical diaphram pump can and will develop a
leak eventually. There is a drain that is supposed to be a tell
tale...if you are on the ground. By having the sensor before that
pump, you would measure the engine consumption plus the leak. That
would argue for placing the sensor before the pumps.

I just fired off an e-mail to Van's. Maybe if everyone did the same as
Grumpy suggests we'll get some action. If that doesn't work, perhaps we all
call and waste more of their time on the phone than it would take to
complete the paperwork they'll get the message :-) Let's be nice though,
I'd rather be flying under an assumed type than flying something else!

Just for my edumacation, if the diaphragm was ruptured or leaking would
that result in more, or less, fuel being 'pulled from the line and
'pushed' to the engine? My guess is that it would be less. Is there a
siphon function which would draw some amount of fuel from the fuel pump
even if the diaphragm was ruptured?

The K1100 nutplates are listed on page 193 of the 2006 Wicks catalog. They
are actually listed as MS21049-L08K for the 8-32 and MS21049-L3K for the
10-32, with the "K" suffix indicating countersunk or dimpled rivet hole. I
purchased some of the 8-32s from them last summer.
