*You may want to consider a larger fan with a speed control to reduce the RPM. This would help reduce the noise from the fan. Tim mentioned stand offs to help keep the fan from warping. You may want to consider a gasket or bushing like stand offs. This also would reduce the noise from fan vibration. Look at <www.Directron.com> they have a huge selection of fans along with some resources on Quiet fans and Quiet computers. You might as well put in a fan that is quiet. They have a black steel mesh filter that could be used in lieu of the DIY approach <http://www.directron.com/smf80.html> * -- Larry Rosen RV-10 #356 http://lrosen.nerv10.com

    From: "dmaib@mac.com" <dmaib@mac.com>
I am thinking about the installation of my Gretz pitot and have some questions. I have installed the mount in the 2nd from the tip bay as others have done and suggested by Gretz as the optimum location. I am curious about future access to the electronic control module. It has to be fairly close to the tube and I am wondering where others are mounting it. Has anyone put an additional access panel in the wing in that area? I have it on a nearby rib so it's accessible by removing the wingtip. On one hand, it's nice to have access to it, but on the other, you really hopefully won't need to have access to it. So it's worth making it convenient, without going overboard and trying to make it ultra-convenient, unless you can do it without a lot of effort. I'd avoid the extra wing access panel if possible. I didn't have the best of fun putting in the one for the stall warning. Those skins can be prone to oil canning if your doubler plate install doesn't go in just perfectly. I had to add stiffners around my stall warning doublers. The word from Mattituck was that it was discontinued and then there was going to be a replacement coming out early this year (Feb or March). You could call Mattituck, but that's all I know about it. I had to send one back because it was bad and then they told me that, so they just gave me my money back after I decided that I didn't want the new one. Do you think the fan will even be heard over the 260HP fan in the front, especially with ANR headsets? Jesse, Absolutely correct. But why add more noise when you don't have to. There must be hundreds of fans to choose from, so pick a quiet one. And it won't even cost any more. Subject: Good Test of cockpit lighting/Defrost Fans with Night IFR Departure
For those who've been following the defrost fan thread, I've got a good pirep of how my 60mm fans worked in actual necessary conditions. Last night I had a great opportunity to test out my fans, and my new cockpit lighting, with a late-night full IFR departure with 1/4mile vis in drizzle and fog and haze. I just recently reworked my cockpit lighting with stuff I got from Stein, and it couldn't have been better timing. Everything worked perfectly and made a big difference in how easy everything was. Also, the departure was very near a big wind-turbine farm, and with the synthetic vision on the EFIS this made for a very interesting but safe departure. I wish I had pictures to show on this one. I did a combined write-up showing my lighting installation, along with a good trip write-up that you may find enjoyable if you're into those types of things. It was a great way to kick off the fun IFR spring season here in Wisconsin. Here's a link to both the story and the lighting install photos: http://www.myrv10.com/N104CD/upgrades/20070321/ -- Tim Olson - RV-10 N104CD - Flying do not archive

I will say I don't disagree with this Larry. Quiet is nice. I do actually like that mine are audible though. I have them turn on with the master, and by having that hum there, I don't forget to turn off the master. So there is an upside to them having a little noise. But any loud or buzzing noise would be a pain. Tim Olson - RV-10 N104CD - Flying do not archive Larry Rosen wrote: > > Jesse, > Absolutely correct. By the way, last night I filed IFR as RV-10/G, and not only did Flight service take it, but flightaware.com reported it correctly. It's nice to finally get away from HXB/G. ATC still called me "Cirrus 4CD" all the time though, so I had to give her a reminder I was an RV10. But if you're gonna mis-call our planes, you may as well do it by calling us something good like a cirrus. ;) -- Tim Olson - RV-10 N104CD - Flying do not archive

Tim Great info on your cockpit lighting and good timing as I am making those decisions now for my panel. I recently posed the question of red versus blue lighting to a friend who is an ophthalmologist, long time pilot with 6 planes ( C421, C185 on floats, C150, Pitts, Fuqua jet, Eclipse vlj on order. Must be tough staying current in all his toys.) Without getting into a discussion of photoreceptors and how the eye works, his response is "if you are primarily interested in seeing outside the cockpit go with red lights. If you are more concerned about reading maps, charts, etc in the cockpit go with blue lighting." He uses only blue. That's for sure. Not only is the suffix similar, but they even look similar. I got my number reserved and very shortly after they spent a lot of money and reserved hundreds (or maybe thousands) with that suffix so they'd be the only ones who could get them. I guess I've been called worse things. ;) Tim Olson - RV-10 N104CD - Flying do not archive Larry Rosen wrote: > > That what you get for picking a Cirrus Design tail number.;) > do not archive >

Anyone using any wing root connectors (between inboard section of the wing and the fuselage) for the wiring? If you are, or have thought about using them, which ones are you using? I have already decided to have connectors there, so that decision is made already. I am just at a loss for what is "standard" for connectors there. -Jim 40384 (60 Degrees F today, expecting 4" snow tonight... Isn't New England wonderful?)

I don't know if there is a standard, but I know Randy used the big black round CPC connectors. Example: http://www.abletronics.com/ampconnectors/cpcseries1.html I bought a bunch of various CPC connectors that I had planned to use but they're all still sitting in their packages. I ended up in favor of continuous strands. Some day I'll dig them out and itemize them and offer them up for sale. Mouser.com is a great place to buy them. They aren't really that cheap when you start to add in the costs of pins, crimpers, and all the other stuff. They are nice connectors though, if you are going to use them. CPC connectors from mouser.com are great. I use series 1 free-hanging connectors for all wiring and just normal BNC's for coax. For the strobes I use 4 pins with the 4th being for the un-insulated wire. This allows you to wire the whole plane before installing the wings. I also use these in the Wingtips and anywhere else that I want to be able to disconnect in the future to work on stuff. Call me if you have more questons about this. Go with the blue. In the absence of a white light, and only the red panel lights, all the magenta info on your sectional disappears. Must be tough staying current in all his toys.) Without getting into a discussion of photoreceptors and how the eye works, his response is "if you are primarily interested in seeing outside the cockpit go with red lights. If you are more concerned about reading maps, charts, etc in the cockpit go with blue lighting." I know of no standard. I find Molex connectors to be the easiest to use and most of them are keyed so they only plug in one way. In the wing root and tips where they have the possibility of getting wet, I spray them liberally with Boshield. From: "Chris Johnston" <CJohnston@popsound.com>
Hey all - I'm doing something funny, and in trying to fit everything in the tunnel, I was trying to figure out how the scat tubing for the rear heat was kept away from WD-1010, and there's no mention of it really. I looked on the websites of all the usual suspects, and it looks like everyone is just routing it over top of the WD-1010 control column and it just sits there. is this right? am I just so conditioned to keeping everything away from everything else that it's making me overthink? I believe it was developed by Boeing (the 'bo' part but that may be urban legend too) for corrosion/moisture protection. You can buy it in spray can or gallon can, and when diluted it makes a great corrosion proofer ala ACF-50 and the like. Doesn't seem to attract dust/dirt like the CRC line. David; Take a look at my kit log site. I posted a few pics of the plate I made to attach the circuit board. Finished attaching the internal wiring and closing everything up a few weeks ago. Went well. I can access the board and remove the tube for service at a later date all from the current access panel Fred Williams 40515

I'm hooking up the wires from the Lightspeed sensors at the flywheel to the computer and I'm wondering how others have gotten the 15 pin d-sub connector through the firewall. I have removed the hood and found they used a solder cup connector so I don't want to desolder the wires. It looks like I could turn the connector block sideways and reduce the size the of hole required to let it pass through the firewall but about the smallest I can squeeze the wires down to is 1". Then the problem is-where do I find a 1" snap bushing with a very large ID? Albert Gardner Yuma, AZ
