I now have 7.1 hours, many landings, and am starting to feel like I have a
little more control....especially when there is more weight in the back
seat, but that is hard on the brakes. You will have to ask Ed about it!

Better yet, we are having our NW RV-10 spring dinner on the 12th. Come to
that and meet a whole gaggle of builders. The dinner is being hosted by
Paul Grimstad. If all goes well we will have our biggest turnout, yet,
complete with special guests. I'll send along the official invite. I won't
be in town until the 12th, but you might want to drop by Bruce
Breckenridge's hanger at Lenhardt's (5 miles from Aurora) and see what he's
up to. He's right next to my hanger, so you can take a peek at mine as
well. Randy Debauw is behind the two of us. Plenty to see.

Deems, you're still doing a fantastic job with it all. You're
pushing on, doing it right, and blazing trails at the same time.
I felt the same when I was re-working that fuel valve plumbing
and stuff like that. But, it is worth it and you are doing it
the right way.
You talked about your list that you made, that's a GREAT thing to
have. And you're right, it grows as you check things off. Until
you've finished the plane, (which I still don't know if I'd claim
I've "finished"), you really haven't any idea even how many more
tasks you have to complete. I did chop my list into sections
though:
Things to do before first flight
Things to do quickly after first flight
Things that can wait indefinitely
If you tried to do each and every thing you dreamed of doing
before you fly it, that may just bog you down. For instance, I
finally added some rear seat lighting, and that overhead lighting...
after 200 hours of flying. That job took a few hours too.
But, there was no reason it had to be done before first flight,
and waiting allowed me to get enough experience in the plane to
know what would work best, or at least well. The best thing you
can do is just pull some wire and leave it coiled up and
tucked away so when you want to add something electrical it's
not hard to do....especially if it involves running wires in
some of the tougher areas, like up the windshield support tube.
It's also a sad fact, but you tipped people off, but the things that
get piled onto that list are not only some of those little things
you skipped along the way, but they're also some of the more
miserable things in some cases. On the upside, once you get paint
on it your motivation level gets so high from seeing your plane look
so completed that it carries you mentally through those processes.
I don't really think a builder really needs to finish those detail
steps at the time they hit them in the plans...if they want to save
them, that's fine...just stick them on the list, but, they do add
up. I'm surprised myself by how completed the kit looks when you're
still at the halfway point...and by how incredibly long some of
those minor tasks take. But, an hour is still an hour, and
ever hour is progress...hang in there.
So, even though you aren't sure when you'll finish, what is appearing
to be your 1/2 way point if you estimate? I assume you are doing
like I did on your "list" and adding a quick time estimate to each
task. For me, I really consider 1/2 way there to be about the time
you're finishing the window and windshield installation. Where
were you at 1100 and 1200 hours?

You've got that right Dan....I thought I'd never be willing to move away
from a place where I could drive easily to Lake Superior, but that
Oregon country really has a lot going for it. I know if I ever need a
job change that I'll be at least exploring that area. Nice to know
there's great people there already as a bonus. I'm sure you enjoyed
your time with everyone out there.

4, yeah, real unfortunate that I got to fly down the coast and land at
two small seaside airports. You guys have it rough up here with the
mountains, oceans and the most gorgeous scenery I have ever scene, and
that is saying allot because I grew up in Colorado, but it is a
different view here. I will wait to write up the trip until I get home,
but boy was it worth it.

I have ever more appreciation for you guys that have full time jobs,
families and still finish a plane in a year and a half! :-) And then
there's guys like Dan Lloyd that do all of that and decide to add on and
complete a Masters Degree in the midst of their build !!!!!
Thanks for the encouragement. I was just 'finishing up' the Fuse (minus
wing attach) @ 1100-1200 hrs. I've since added another 150-200hrs
according to my construction log

the fuse is a little skewed because of some of the 'mods' I did (center
console, overhead console, also Sec 41 is where I logged most of my
time planning/building/wiring my instrument panel during last summers
heat). Tim, It was your comment about the windows that got me rethinking
my estimates! I put off installing my windows until just recently so
I'd have better access and less worry about damage, so I hope that
benchmark isn't true any longer in my case. I think that if you were
doing a straight slo-build with few/no mods that the end of the Fuse and
beginning of Finish is about the halfway point. My best estimate is that
I've got another 500hrs (+ / -) to go, so that would also correlate. Tim
you also inspired me to paint the plane before flying, I realize there's
different opinions about paint before or after, but I'm in the before
camp. I also think that getting it painted will pump some fresh wind
into the sails.

I did fly an RV-9, and must say that that the RV-10 flies as easy as
the RV-9. The only thing that is difficult for a cherokee pilot is
the ground handling. the cherokee's bigger wheels, farther apart, and
nosewheel steering do make it easier on pilots. having said this, it
is not too difficult to learn how to ground-maneuver it. in the air,
both the RV-9 and the RV-10 are incredibly benign aircrafts. the only
"problem" is that they like to fly so much, a little thermal from
below can make you gain 100' of altitude fairly easily. (the old
cherokee was more like a tank that's dragged through the air.)
I fly very rarely these days---I have a 2 year old son. So, I am
still trying to sell my RV-10. (http://welch.econ.brown.edu/n325hp/).
The FAA has not even upgraded my registration yet from the builder
(Noel Simmons---does great work; highly recommended). The only reason
why I can keep it sofar as a fallback is that, although it is
practically a new plane for me everytime I get into the cockpit, it is
so very benign to fly. I know that it is not a great situation in the
long-run, though.

I have a friend (Tom) who asked the following question (below) on a
different list. Any comments/input?
At present I have purchased a Garmin 430 and a yellow tagged MX-20. I would
like to know if anyone is flying with or considering the Advanced Flight
Systems Model AF-3500 also with engine monitoring. I was also considering
the GRT Spot model since I have an MX-20 already. Any comments would be
appreciated.

both ways, there on the Chippewa River in Eau Claire. Can't imagine why
