Subject: | OSH Planning Materials |
I've completed my final big update of the builders list with
lots of planning info available. Some of it is directly
available off the EAA site too, but some things, like the
Vendor list for 2007, I've reprocessed into a perhaps more
printer-friendly or portable version.
On the list are now:
2007 Vendor List
Hangar A
Hangar B
Hangar C
Hangar D
North Aircraft Area
Main AC Area
OSH 2007 Planning Guide
Airventure Evening Activities Schedule
OSH 2007 Day by Day Schedule
Camp Scholler Map
Airventure Grounds Maps
Transportation Map / Airventure Services Map
Crafts Class Schedule
RV-10 HQ Scholler Printable Map
Hopefully that info will help you plan for the show, and have
the materials you need to find the vendors you most want to
see.
We'll attempt the 10am meeting time thing daily at Van's again
this year. I may not make them all, but I'll make some of them.
If you're a builders-list person, you may want to grab some
contact numbers of people to take with you so that you can get a
hold of people by cell while you're at the show.
I'll also be doing my best to get some photos and do a few updates
while I'm at the show, but I'm not sure if the EAA is finally on the
ball with wireless available yet, so I may be stuck with a slow
cell link. At any rate, y'all know where the campsites are now,
so there isn't a whole lot of mystery left other than which
rows the RV-10's will be parked in. You'll probably find
most of them in the same general area, except for the HBC (homebuilt
camping) -10's...those will probably just be out in the HBC area
and will probably be more scattered by arrival date/time.
I look forward to meeting many more of you in person, and if you
have kids 5-10, bring them along as my kids would love a good
group to play with. There's plenty to do for everyone.
As a repeat, here are some links:

Subject: | Help with a AFS / GRT comparison |
I know many will be reporting back on a daily basis for different vendor
solutions. The comparison I am interested in is between Rob's AFS-3500 and
the new GRT fast and bright screen product. I know they are not apples to
apples in functionality, but at least when considering a fully outfitted GRT
Sport, they seem to be similar in price, once you add a suitable GPS to
drive the AFS versus a add-on Garmin GPS for the GRT. Also, I'm hoping that
Rob has upped the anti with the AFS for OSH.
Anyway, I'm rambling. What I'd like is a report back on the quality of the
presentation of each, not necessarily the functionality. If someone could
do that. Screen clarity and brightness. Refresh rate. Things like that.
Thanks.

I think they're going to try to park us all in the same rows...not
trying to be nice and keep us together, but just because we're the
same size. You may find other similar sized planes there too. But
in general, I would bet that we end up in the same general area
with lots of RV-10's in the same row...at least until all heck
breaks loose after the arrivals and departures start to mix up.

Scott,
I don't know about a halfway point, but, a good place to get
fuel on the way is KLUM just East of the Minneapolis area.
It's my home field, and fuel is still $3.75/gal right now.
There's a pisser in the brown terminal building, and my hangar
is on field. It's almost exactly an hour from OSH straight-line,
so it gives you time to take a leak, and have only a short
flight over, so you can arrive full on fuel. If you end up
stopping there, and give me a head's up on ETA, I'd meet you
and greet you. Otherwise, see ya at the HQ!

Thanks for the replies. The advice on making a dip tube first thing is
good. Can one of you guys who followed this advice tell me how far above
bottom of the tank, below the filler opening, 20 gallons comes (or some
other calibration you have)?
Tim, yes, I understand that sitting on the ground you can burn almost
all of the fuel in the tanks. I was trying to guess how much gas would
be needed to be safe while maneuvering.

I get even more conservative than Tim.
I fill to the top and then tell the EIS that there is only 57 gallons total.
So hopefully if I'm dumb enough to get down that low, there are 3 gal still

Small comment....your WAG on the unusable volume is waaaay off. The
unusable volume is about 1/3 qt per tank. I've tested it. This is
in level flight, however, so I would not expect it to go all the way
to any safe landing if you have to turn with less than your 2 gallons
or maybe more.
I can't answer the question on the tabs....I just always fill it full.

Subject: | Re: Help with a AFS / GRT comparison |
I'm not sure about reporting back on a daily basis, but I will offer to summarize
my feedback the following week.
I've got two primary missions next week. They are engine and panel choices.
To be honest, Dan Lloyd is driving the engine decision. Or at least he will be
once he gets the turbo installed and starts generating performance data.
So I will most likely be spending most of my time attempting to make an EFIS decision
between AFS/GRT/MGL. There are other great solutions, but I don't think
my budget will support them. Now if I start getting close to what OP or Chelton
will cost it, that will be a different story. But at this point in time
it looks likely to be an EFIS from one of these vendors.

Subject: | Best site for real-time IFR flight tracking? |
Hey all,
We've been using FlightAware.com to let people track our IFR flights but would
prefer real time (actually, my wife would like it, I don't care while I'm the
one flying . . . ).
Anyone know of such a site (free is better . . .)

flightaware is about as real time as it gets.... they all get the same feed from
same ATC source... so I don't think you'll get any one to be more real time
than the other.

I think Flightaware.com is about as real-time as you can get. It does
work really well. I've tracked arriving people before so I knew when
they'd show up. If someone knows of a better one though, let us
know...it's nice to have options. That said, I registered, and it was
free for me, for Flightaware.com, and it does a great job for me.
You can even save favorite's for N-Numbers to track.
