| Subject: | Aileron Mounting Hardware |

I can not find a washer in any of my bags and am wondering what others have done.

Page 21-8 figure 3 describes the mounting hardware for the inboard aileron hinge
bracket. There is an AN3-14A that attaches the aileron mounting bracket to
the wing 'Inboard Aileron Bracket Assembly'. On the inboard side of the wing
bracket, there is a A-1012 spacer that we make followed by a washer part number
5702-475-45 Z3. I can not find it in my hardware listing of all the bads and
their contents. I do find this item in Van's catalog but there is no description
telling me the exact size of a washer that I am looking for. I think it
is something like an oversized AN960-10 but smaller then an AN970-3. Using an
AN970-3 causes a binding against the wing mounting bracket when the bolt is
      snugged up.

With this item not listed in the hardware list, I am assuming that it was not provided.

I am trying to mount/trim my wing tips and need the exact mounting location (inboard-outboard)
of the aileron so I can get the spacing correct.

Can anyone help with what you did or what bag you found it in?

Do you mean 5702-475-48 Z3?? look for that washer should have those. I don't
      think there is a -45 Z3
Maybe you still have the parts from the Empennage? (look for bag#1145). I
have two not used that will probably be used when I do the attachment later,
that should give you a size to start with if you indeed do not have the
washer. Also if you don't.. call Vans they'll send you the respective
      washer.

| Subject: | stuck in Sacramento |

I wanted to thank everyone for offering help, tools and place to get
me on my way home from Sacramento Ca. It is really nice to know that
as a group, we are never alone while traveling.

My VM1000C went blank on departure on Sunday. I was told by Vision
Micro in Texas (now also JPI) that they are being recalled and I
could receive in one month. They also told me that they did not have
a loaner to get me going. This prompted me to email for help as I
thought that I might have to jerry-rig a couple of gauges to get me
      going.

In the mean time, I called JPI located in Orange County CA for help.
They were very helpful and located a loaner, except that they sent me
the new model which did not fit my plugs.

In short, I received the right loaner on Thursday at 7:00 AM (thank
you FedEx) and was in the air by 10:00 AM.

      Thanks again

      Rob.

You are correct. Fat fingered that one. -48 is correct.

I checked the bag 1145 and it only has the four 5702-95-30's in it. The -48's
are on the emp somewhere and all of the emp is at the hanger (23 miles away).
Guess I will look back through the emp kit plans and see if I can id where it
is used. May remember its thickness and size, and might even have a picture.
Have to wait until Monday to call Vans. This will be the second time over a
      weeks time period.
Had another problem that they took care or right away. It was an incorrect MS24694-S67.
It is detailed on page 21-8 and is used to attach the aileron push
rod to the aileron. It should be 1 9/16 long and comes in bag 1213. The bag
and the inventory don't give the length so I didn't know it was the incorrect
length until I tried to fit it. Mine were 1-7/8" long and tlhe threadded ends
      touch the aileron rib.
My fuselage and finishing kits ship this next week. Bet it will be fun finishing
them out. My emp finished out with everything correct. Looks like I am having
2 problems with the wing kit. As complex as all of this is, it is amaizing
how well all of this is done.

      Thanks,
      Gary

I am not worried about the Subbie making it, rather it would be me and
needing the bathroom every hour, and can I carry enough Diet Coke!

| Subject: | sept 2006 service letter axle-wheel bearing |

When doing routine maintenance on my nose wheel, due to a felt vibration, I
inspected the axle and wheel bearing. I discovered the bearing was no longer
preloading and the axle sleeve was spinning and damaging the forks. There was
approximately a fifteen thousandths groove worn in the fork on one side only and

the bearing was not preloading. When I originally made the installation,
which was prior to Van's letter, I noted that I had to shorten the axle shaft on
      a
mill in order to get the spacers to preload the wheel bearing. The bearing
functioned well at the time and the wheel and tire spun with considerable
resistance. In effect, I complied with Van's recommendation in the September 2006

letter. I am concerned that there may be other individuals with similar problems

and I would recommend you check the front axles periodically. I know I am
rehashing a subject that there was considerable comment on, but in light of the

fact that I did comply with Van's recommendations I feel this may be somewhat
of a new issue. I recall from earlier discussions some of you had used a set
screw to prevent this from happening, if anyone has any information or reports

of success, after some time in service, I would appreciate comment. It should
also be noted, that I had the earlier stainless steel spacers. Great airplane.

I hope everyone who is flying is having half as much fun as I am.
      Sincerely,
      Jim Rore

If I caught one of your closing comments, you were using the original
stainless one? If so, I should note that despite anything Van's
says, that's a big no-no. Here's how mine turned out:
      http://www.myrv10.com/N104CD/maintenance/20060809/index.html

I don't think I've yet started using the new ones. (Can't remember, I
might be though) But, I know I did secure them in place so that it
wouldn't cause any more wear. It's a nasty problem, and I would
strongly state that NOBODY should continue flying with the original
stainless parts, if everything was done per-plans. People NEED to
do at least something to prevent major issues, be it replacing
with the new parts, or securing the old so they can't rotate.
Some day, this one is going to bite a person big, when their
      fork goes bad on them.

On the Eggenfellner page, click news and there are several, and we
installed a gullwing hinge on the top, so all the builder does is undo
the mil-spec fasteners on one side and the entire side of the cowl
raises up to expose the engine. This mod, splitting the cowl down the
top and bottom makes it very easy to de-cowl the plane and not have to
worry about the gear leg fairing or more importantly the 3/4 bladed
prop. The 10 builders using the 3 bladed MT might look at something like
this also, it was an easy mod to accomplish.

If this is after the point where you have nutplates in the backplate
rings, then I think all they want you to do is look through the
semi-transparent spinner and drill where you see light coming
through the nutplate holes. But, this is from memory and not from
reading the plans. If this doesn't sound right, give the step number
and page and I'm sure people will jump in.

      Ouch, I see it now...if your S-602B doesn't have 1/8" holes
on it, you must have a part that wasn't completed all the way.
Might have to look ahead in the plans to make sure there's nothing
that you'd upset by just placing them where they make sense.
You're kind of far away to have it be worth getting a new part
over. Maybe they can email you a full-size template or something?
Or, hey, if anyone on the list has that part and wants to trace it
and scan it in, they could get it to you somehow...just have
to make sure it's printed to scale.

Tip on the SPINNER: If you wanna be able to use CS washers and flush sc
rews ...........DO NOT center drill the holes for the back spinner plate
per the instruction. If you do there is not enough room for the CS was
her. Drill the holes more toward the spinner tip......approx 1/8" off c
      enter line.
