Subject: | Re: autopilot install- now which side? |
This one to me seems to come from far left field. After flying for
so many hours, it just seems like you need to get it in the air
to feel it. My sticks flop about easily when on the ground. In the
air the control feel is super light. Actually, the pitch forces
are a bit low at times. In roll, I'm very happy that the ailerons
get some stiffness to them. It's still a plenty light plane that
flies with fingertips only, but if the roll forces were any less,
I'd be more worried about how the plane would be to fly IFR. Even
with the airplane off though, the controls are so easy to manipulate
that any friction from the servos is barely noticeable. I think
you'll have to get it flying and spend some time with it, because
you'll have a lot less to complain about once you feel it in the
air. It isn't a 4,6,7,8 but even if I was wanting to do aerobatics
all I'd want out of the plane was maybe a bit lighter aileron,
and that would be more a factor of aileron size than any minor
amount of servo friction.

install- now which one?Re: autopilot install
Just as an FYI. When I ordered my TT Sorcerer ( I have the full blown
version) I ass/u/med ( you know the / saying ) that it had an auto trim
feature included, but since I've starting flying I now realize that the
auto trim feature is a separate option. What happens without it is the
auto pilot will audio out for the pilot to "trim up" or trim down" .
Yesterday while flying at around 2500' I was showing someone how the
auto pilot worked. It was a little bumpy here in the TX warm afternoon
and the AP was saying trim up or trim down a bunch. It gets a little
annoying, you're trying to talk and it's saying "trim up" or "trim
down".
When I first starting flying the plane, the auto pilot would say trim
up or down and I thought it was just telling me everything that it was
doing not that I needed to do the trimming, so I wasn't doing anything
and it would just keep telling me. In my last plane I had the Century IV
AP and it did that function for me so I was use to not having to do
this.. Anyway I have since ordered the auto trim feature, another $650,
and will be installing it shortly. I probably could live without it but
it's sometimes a little distracting for it to be putting out audio trim
commands all the time. In hard IFR I'm concerned that it could become a
major distraction from the tasks at hand.
I absolutely love the AP though. This thing can do about anything you
could want it to do and then some. For those who have the Chelton's and
the TruTrak AP, I started out with Chelton software ver 6.0A9 and when I
used the GPS steer (GPSS) function the AP would kind of wonder around
trying to keep on coarse. I have since upgraded to Chelton's latest ver
6.0A16 and it' really tracks the coarse great now.

Subject: | ADS-B Contract Awarded |
I heard yesterday that ITT corp won the ADS-B contract witht he FAA.
That actually means that WSI will be the official provider of weather
for the ADS-B system. I guess that wasn't surprising though because
they were the weather source that the FAA used elsewhere too.
I did question them as to if this means the weather will be free
via ADS-B or will it later be fee-based. I don't think a fee-based
thing is on anyone's mind right now this early in the game.
But, I did hear that the only thing that will be available
initially will be NowRAD, so all of those other weather features
are still something you'll want one of the paid-for services
to get. There are lots more things of value that you get with
those services, like lightning, echo tops, winds, and so on.
Anyway, here's the news clip that I saw this a.m. after having
heard the above...
FAA AWARDS ADS-B CONTRACT, MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR 2020
The FAA on August 30 awarded an ITT Corporation team the $1.8 billion
contract to build and operate the ADS-B (automatic dependent
surveillance-broadcast) ground infrastructure. Unlike traditional FAA
projects where the contractor builds the equipment and turns it over to
the agency, ITT will own the infrastructure and supply aircraft position
data to the FAA. While the FAA calls ADS-B the "backbone" of the NextGen
air traffic control modernization program, "this is really just Phase
One of a project that extends out more than a decade," said AOPA
President Phil Boyer. "This won't be like the hurried Mode C transponder
mandate when Congress gave aircraft owners 18 months to equip. If ADS-B
is ultimately mandated for general aviation, it won't be until 2020."

Anyone hear about a possible RV-10 incident recently? It might
have been yesterday, and might have involved one of the
build-for-customer RV-10's? Trying to see if there's fact
to the rumor at this point.

Tim, I'd have to say my experience with the pitch servo (I'm not flying yet)
is the stick stays whever I put it. In other words, it definetly doesn't
flop around like it did before the servo was connected. Maybe not left
field?
I'll post the model of the servo later when I can view it.

Perry,
It sounds like my experience is similar to the other responses. I can't
even tell it's there when I don't have the autopilot engaged and I have time
in a lot of high performance machines as well as the RV-6. I'm not sure if
that's what you wanted to hear.
