Phosphoric acid is the basic ingredient in aluminum 'brighteners' that
will surface etch the aluminum and make it the best it can be for
bonding with paint and epoxies etc. I use it to clean prior to alodine
or painting. I like to take an old terry cloth towel and soak it with
the acid and wipe the aluminum down real good. Flush with copious
amounts of water, dry the surface and do the next step fairly quickly
.... whatever it is you're doing.

This hopefully will interest some. N256H just made it's longest non-stop
flight on Saturday afternoon/evening. With full standard tanks, 3 people on
board and about 120 lbs of baggage (read stuff), we flew from Newton, KS
(KEWK) to Dunnellon, FL (X35), with a little "swerving" around thunderstorms
right at the end for a total of 1,070 statute miles. According to
Weathermeister.com, the GPS/EFIS comparison between TAS and GS, and the
winds aloft info from the Flight Cheetah and Garmin 396, we averaged between
5 and 10 knot headwinds over the 7 hour 3 minute flight. With 55 gallons
burned, that averaged less than 8 gph and left 5/8's hour of reserve. Not
bad for an "experimental" aircraft, huh? Can anybody tell me about another
4-place that can fly over 1,000 miles nonstop averaging almost 20 mpg over
the ground, into some modest winds? Oh, that was at 17,500 the whole way
with fuel flows between 6.9 and 7.4 gph in cruise. Departed KEWK at 5:23pm
Central and landed X35 at 1:26am Eastern. I hope I'm not the only one that
loves to fly at night. That was FANTASTIC!

Great report Jesse. I haven't flown that kind of non-stop distance
in the -10, but I frequently see a listed range upwards of 1000nm
once in LOP cruise at higher altitudes, so I know it's possible.
I'd probably be sweating a bit landing with 5 gallons, just in
case of having fuel unporting during a slip to crosswind
landing, but I've tested the usable fuel and found that when you're
out, there's less than 1/2 qt or so that will drain out, so
as long as there's no crosswind, and you meet the 1/2 hour
reserve, it's do able for sure.
Nope, you're not the only one that loves flying at night. ;)

Phosphoric acid etch is the first of two steps in alodine treatment of
aluminum Alclad. The phosphoric acid is the etching process which
allows primer to adhere after alodine treats the surface.
If primer adheres better, then you might conclude that the adhesive
adheres better to retain the referenced part.
Ask Jesse about whether he followed that specific step and the method
used for replacement of the original windscreen after damage from errant
Columbia propellers.

Guys,
I have a Lightspeed Ignition on top with the beautiful MSD 8.5 Super Conductor
Wires that Klauss supplies in the kit. However, I see that some of you have
the nice Silicone wires (red in color) on the bottom magneto. Where can I get
the "colored" silicone magento wires for the mag?

This is WAAAY off topic. Not airplane related other than
airplanes take cash.
Anyway, last night I watched a great video that's available
on google videos. It's a 45 minute animated thing on the banking
industry and how the government creates money. Now I know,
that sounds like a real snoozer to some, but it was extremely
enlightening to see, and after hearing some of the background
info it will REALLY make you think.
Anyway, I was pretty impressed. Here's a link:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-9050474362583451279
I did find that if you look hard you can find it in Xvid .AVI,
so then it could be saved and watched while not online.
Sorry if you didn't want to hear all that. This video I
thought was one worth seeing by all. I'm surprised by
what I learned and it has info that kind of puts the markets
in perspective a bit.

That's just the slick harness that's available in colors. You should
be able to get them from almost anywhere that sells the slick mags.
You just need to specify the color. I think Aerosport asked me which
ones I wanted when they ordered.

Chris,
Spruce sells it as Alumiprep in gallon jugs. You dilute it about 2-1 with
water. I used it as part of the Alodining and priming that I did to all
interior surfaces. I also am Alumipreping and Alodining all external
aluminum as part of the pain process. I apply the Alumiprep with a red
Scotchbrite and scuff it in real good. When the aluminum is almost a white
color it has worked well. Do not let it dry while applying and rinse it real
good. Some auto paint stores carry an equivalent aluminum cleaner (tried
some that did not work as well).

Good point John,
Should you alodine the aluminum after the etch just prior to installing the windshield?

Lovers of night flight might want to review 91.151 re min fuel. Of
course if the headwinds were not anticipated fuel requirements go out
the window.
