Has anyone had installation issues with the elevator trim access panels? I managed to thread the access panel with trim stop nut onto the left elevator trim cable okay, but on the right elevator there is no way there is enough clearance for the access panel and trip stop nut to rotate around the trim cable housing to thread on. I thought I could maybe drill out the rivets holding the trim stop nut onto the access panel, thread the nut on separately, and then use some small counter-sunk screws and nuts to attach the access panel after the fact. Any other ideas? TDT Tim Dawson-Townsend tdt@aurora.aero 617-500-4812 (office) 617-905-4800 (mobile)

Did you do this same test using the Weld-on 10? I would be interested in knowing how that one turns out. Dan -----Original Message----- From: owner-rv10-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-rv10-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of eagerlee Sent: Thursday, October 11, 2007 1:00 AM Subject: RV10-List: test patch - plexiglas glued to cabin top I sent an email request to the Van's builder support asking about the use of epoxy resin to glue the windows to the cabin. Ken Scott replied that they simply do not know if it will work or not , but that they do know that Weld-On 10 does work. I built a test sample by mixing west system epoxy and adding chopped fibers to get a texture that didn't sag under its own weight. I alcohol cleaned a strip of cabin top (it was trimmed away for the door) and a surplus strip of side window Plexiglas. Both strips had been scuffed thoroughly with 120 grit aluminum oxide. I used a liberal amount of epoxy to bond the 1 inch wide strips for a 6 inch overlap. Light pressure was applied with three clothespin type clamps. The piece cured for 24 hours at 70 degrees F and today I performed a test of the sheer strength of the joint. The junction of the epoxy and the Plexiglas failed when I applied some sharp raps with a light weight ball peen hammer. I don't have subjective quantitative val! ues for the amount of force needed to break the joint, but the pieces came apart way too easily for me. The junction of the epoxy and cabin top didn't fail under extreme chisel torture. I'll do a similar test when i get my Plexiglas glue. I bought the after market ones, I threaded them on and then attached them with pop rivets, I figured it was easy enough to drill them out as needed. I was going to install nut plates, but regardless of size I could get an easy solution. I did think of making a mounting plate for the anchor to attach to and then put nut plates on that to attach the cover, then decided it was just easier to pop rivet. I just completed my final assembly and had to drill out the rivets and screw it on. Had to do it twice, since the first time I could not adjust for the 35 degrees. The second time I used clecos to hold the plate on while I did the adjustment and then put the rivets back on when I was done. In my opinion there are way to many combinations on how each of us fly and operate the engines. The are so many variables on the Lycomings it is difficult to build a chart with every variation out there. Heck I would even argue that the same engine moved from one plane to the next will perform differently, that we can not define a definitive answer. What we can provide however is generalities to performance numbers, will any one way we present the numbers meet everyone's perceived needs? No, but what it will do is give something to compare to. With that being said Tim did us a great service in creating his website and it has a page specifically for performance numbers, and while everyone talks about how important these comparisons are, only two people out of over 100 have chosen to provide that information. The information posted on the Eggenfellner site was taken from those two reports, and is preliminary at best. We have made several changes to the engine since that data was posted, so it is already out of date and will need to be changed, but conversely there is a much larger pool of Lycomings to pull the stat's from, but no one is taking the time to fill out the data and have Tim post it. I for one will be traveling up to Tim's so we can fly the planes in like conditions and we will post the data, but that still will only be one Lycoming compared to one Subaru, and that is not statistically significant, but if we all work together as a team and collect the required data we can only make it better for all of us that follow. There are enough RV10's flying that we should have a good baseline for comparison, and as soon as Jan ships this engine batch there will be at least 10 more Subaru's quickly flying that we can start comparing to, I also know of at least two rotary's and two V-8's in late construction so we will have those numbers too. But until WE all take the time to gather the data we are all just making conjecture. Lets collect the data and make it visible to all so they can use it for comparison. If you want to save a couple bucks on the MB antenna, you can strip a 40" section of RG58 or similar so that the center conductor is exposed. MB's are so tightly focused lot's of old timers say you can pick it up with a coat hanger sticking out the back of the receiver and in some cases with nothing. Somewhere in my logs I wrote up some stuff on it but can't remember what section anymore. Thanks Michael, Yes after I sent the request I decided on a single Archer 1 and was debating on the RG58 vs. the CI-102 Marker Antenna. I don't mind removing one more item form the slipstream. Michael are you good with my proposed location for the Comm antenna? My Comms should be plenty powerful with dual 16 Watt transceivers. If I really wanted to save money on antennas I would call Garmin and complain that their $60,000+ G900X should come with GPS antennas. Every other GPS they make (as far as I know) come with an antenna, why not the G900X? Thanks, Robin Do Not Archive

Weird that DUATS doesn't and DUAT does. I didn't have good luck filing a couple times with Golden Eagle (DUATS), but today I filed with Voyager (DUAT) and it took it right away and within an hour I was in air picking up a clearance to Atlanta. I filed as RV10/G. Pretty nice day. I flew LOP for a while at 9K, and then took a brief stint at ROP. I gained an easy 10kts over my LOP flight phase, but it sure changes the range....so a couple minutes I was kicked back again in the low 160's with flows around 10gph. Subject: Re: Dan's H6Turbo numbers)
    From: "Tim Olson" <Tim@MyRV10.com>
Hear Hear! You're right...we need more data! My own numbers are just numbers I usually gather from trips, and I fly LOP almost all the trips. I pay a price and today I saw that at that particular temp/pressure/altitude I paid a price of about 10KTs for a huge savings in fuel. My numbers will ALWAYS be slow in comparison to most people's, because that's the way I cruise. I'd rather have well over 1000nm range at 162-4 kts than 600-800 at 170-4 kts, so I do what I do. I very rarely have the throttle all the way forward, other than during climb. In fact, in cruise, one of the first things do is pull back the throttle until I knock about .2" of MAP off the WOT setting. I've heard in the past especially with carb engines that the throttle plate can have an effect on the mixture distribution, and it can be smoother if you pull it back a little. I found this true on my old plane, and it may be just psychological but it seems true on this one. So I pull it back just a tad from WOT, and then set the prop and mixture. Anyway, as long as someone does 2 things, I'm happy to post numbers. 1 is you absolutely MUST have done a 4 way gps calibration so you know how far off your TAS is from actual. 2 is that you try to fill in most of the blanks. Given those 2 things, I think we can have a really good performance representation for all. Thanks for bringing it up Dan! Subject: Trim access plate install
Just as the other responses I've opted for pop rivets and have had to drill them out to remove the elevator. Hopefully it's for the last time as the bird is in the paint shop. One consideration, although I'm not convinced it will work, is to tap the holes for screws if you have the aftermarket versions. They are great and I wonder if there's enough material to make that work since they are a little thicker. Just a thought, I don't have access to the airplane right now to validate it. Marcus _____ From: owner-rv10-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-rv10-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Dawson-Townsend,Timothy Sent: Thursday, October 11, 2007 7:31 AM Subject: RV10-List: Trim access plate install Has anyone had installation issues with the elevator trim access panels?

Rob, Did the drawing get deleted? I am not seeing it or any link. Very interested in seeing it as we talked a couple days ago about all of this. -------- Gary Blankenbiller RV10 - # 40674 Fuselage SB (N410GB reserved) Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=139511#139511
