Deems don't worry about stretching 1-2 months out to a year. When I
thought I was a month away from being finished with my RV-10 project I
found that I still had more than three months of almost full time work
to get it to DAR inspection.
In addition, you can also use another pilot to do the fly off hours and
still be involved with the daily cowl removal and adjustments that are
needed.
I had another pilot listed on my insurance for the flyoff period and the
insurance company didn't charge anything extra. My dream was for the
two of use to get the flyoff done sooner so that I could fly to OSH2006.
After getting my DAR approval I knew there was no way I was going to
fly to OSH2006 unless I falsified my flyoff time so as it turned out I
ended up doing all the flyoff time myself over a little more than a
month.
Even 17 months after the first flight there are still things that I am
changing, many of which would have already been done if I had been
grounded from flying.
During my build, I had three major surgeries over a four month period
and it was really hard to take the time off building to get well but man
has the flying of N710RV been worth it.

I certainly hope the people like me who've been married twice aren't
in the majority. Hopefully for those building an RV-10, it won't
strain the marriage too much and CAUSE you to need a 2nd one. I can
see how that would happen to some people though.
For me, it was like night and day. Out with complete misery, but
in with my perfect match. I'd have never built a nice plane if my
life had continued it's previous course. But now I ended up with
a wife who's a perfect partner for most anything. She was involved
in almost every decision in building the plane, she helped and got
into the construction process, she enjoys the flying, and
she even did some of the work having the kids to fill the back seats.
For me, Christsmas or whatever your choice of holiday is, is about
the family, and the holiday, because I already have the presents
I need most....the wife and the kids.
If you're unmarried and seeking, and building a -10...my advice
is to find the right mate....one who will actually enjoy flying
with you. I think it could get pretty stressful owning such
a beautiful plane if it isn't something you can share.

Tim,
I'm not like you. I have not been married twice - I've been married
three times. When I met my first wife, I owned a J-3 Cub. Our first
date was in that airplane. But shortly after we got married she
happened to see the bill for hangar rent and realized aviation was
expensive. She said "Either that airplane goes, or I go." I made a
mistake and sold the airplane. Should have just divorced her on the
spot and saved myself 12 more years of misery.
After I divorced her, I started flying again and began building a
Pietenpol Air Camper. While building it, I met and married my second
wife. Shortly after we got married I bought a Cessna 140, and she fllew
in it with me maybe 3 times before announcing she was terrified of
flying. She resented the time I spent building the Pietenpol, but
refused to get involved with the project. Eventually she ran off with a
28 year old (she was 40).
As I was finishing the Pietenpol I met a lady (whom I had no intentions
of marrying) who seemed interested in the project. She helped me finish
it and filmed my first flight in it. She likes to fly and convinced me
to buy the RV-4 so we would have something faster than the 58 knot
Pietenpol to travel in. Then when she realized how cramped the RV-4 is
for travel, she agreed enthusiastically that we need an RV-10. I
married her last year and she has been a huge help on the RV-10.
It took me three tries to find the right one, but once you find her it
makes EVERYTHING better.
Merry Christmas to all on this list of friends!

Deems, you can rest assured there will be nothing "Whimsical" from my
posts this week. You have been my inspiration and balance with your
passion, hard work, tenaciously creative efforts and measurable

accomplishments down the road of life. I hold hope for many more safe

like You and Judy. I immediately shared with my wife (and build partner

should be even better for you and Judy in "Living the Dream".
We are blessed to live in such a wonderful country "One Nation Under

my wife and I received word by telephone that a tragic death which took
place here in Oregon a few days ago had reached out and directly touched
our "First Family" of RV-10 builders with a loss of a loved one. This
week, this last month and certainly this last year has caused a great
deal of reflection on what is truly important to us.
To you and your family's continued good health, to the enjoyment of
RV-10s, We wish you a speedy and full recovery. Just consider this a

If I decide to continue perhaps I'd use some of next year to help

I'd also like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
It is really fun to get to the end of the year after a full year of flying your
RV-10 and think about all the amazing places you saw due to the hard work of
building it.
Oshkosh was a highlight for me and my wife, but the Bahamas were great, 16R at
Van Nuys, PHX Nascar, breakfast at Driggs, branding in South Dakota, Red Bull
Air Races in San Diego and Monument Vally, Nellis with Tim and Wayne are just
a few amazing memories I have from this year. The plane is flying better than
ever now. We have flown enough miles over the past 14 months to fly around
the world twice.
Deems, this is just a thought, but you may want to let someone fly your plane when
it is complete so that when you are back in saddle, the plane has all the
bugs worked out. It really takes 100 hours and 6 months to get everything perfect.
That first flight is great, but the real memories come from trips with
family and friends. You may not want to delay that process. But only if you
really really trust someone. I know everything will be fine with you and we will
look forward to seeing you in the air soon. Sorry that had to happen but
all things happen for a reason.

Now that you are accepting change orders, please let me add to your scope growth.
The link below is to a very interesting device that I came across yesterday. It is an "air slicer" and can be found at: http://www.periheliondesign.com/moreproducts.htm
So what we need is a way to use this so we can mix variable amounts of warm / cold
air to get heater air of a specific teperature.
In the unlikely event you feel the need to hold a "Pity Party", I suggest you keep
in mind the old latin quotation and act accordingly: Quis Dolor Cui Dolium
Cheers & Merry Christmas

Subject: | Trans-Continental Flight |
For those who are interested, my dad and I just got in yesterday from
Ecuador in N256H. We traveled a total of 2,225nm in 14.75hrs and
burned a total of about 133gals (16.7+ nm/gal at 150knotts-gs and 9gph
average over 3 legs). The longest leg was from MRPV (San Jose, Costa
Rica) to Key West via airways through La Mesa and Cozumel, 1,084nm in
7hrs and 61gals (17.7+ nm/gal at 155knotts-gs and 8.7gph average) -
glad to have the aux tank! The whole flight started at 12pm CST on
Wednesday and was completed at 6pm EST on Thursday with no night
flying (night flying is fun, but not over the Pacific ocean or the
Gulf of Mexico, IMHO). After things finally cleared up enough in
Quito for us to get off VFR, the weather was fantastic the whole trip,
with cruising altitudes of 17,500, 16,500 and 13,500 the whole way.
TFR's via the internet are a great tool for international traveling.
The combination of the Garmin 430, Flight Cheetah FL210 with terrain,
Garmin 296 with terrain, Dynon D-180, Vertical Power VP-200, Icom
A-200, TruTrak ADI-G, GTX-327 and handheld radio backup made for great
situational awareness and redundancy throughout the whole VFR trip.
The Hobbs on N256H was just about to turn 450 as we rolled up to the
hangar yesterday afternoon.
Sorry we didn't get numbers on the wing fillets yet, but we ran short
on time down there and decided to ship them up and test them up here.
We will let ya'll know when we get them and try them out. They look
great, so we will see if they make any difference in speeds.
For those interested in the Vertical Power, it really is a nice way to
handle the power and the automatic mode switching works great and
lowers the pilot's workload during the times where he/she needs to
concentrate on flying the plane. The voice alerts are nice for engine
alerts and the information on voltage and current draw are great to
know. Without lights, our 12V plane draws 9Amps during normal
operation when not transmitting (1.2A is drawn by the VP-200 system
itself), but with everything on the panel turned on. Standard Navs
draw 6A, Strobes draw 6A and each landing light draws 7A. The Falcon
heated pitot draws 8A. 4 of Stein's swivel LED's draw less than .1A
together.
Keep building - it's worth it.
GOD BLESS and Merry CHRISTmas!

Subject: | Re: Console above tunnel |
Jim,
We have used a similar console in several planes we have worked on. I
really helps to clean up the panel, especially if used for switches
and breakers and things like that. It also really helps to stiffen up
the bracket that holds the control cables. As long as it is screwed
on and has disconnects at the back for ease of removal (don't know how
well that will work with an audio panel and transponder as in Eric's
case), it only adds a little time to the removal of the tunnel cover
for access to the fuel filter. Having switches on the top of the
lower console also gives very convenient access without taking your
right hand very far from the controls (some switches can even be
accessed while on the throttle, prop or mixture cables).

Subject: | The Pity Party has been cancelled! |
Deems, its not a pity party, its support from your RV-10 brethren! As I've
come to learn, it's not just a plane you build when you start this project.
But that is great news! Life's too short to surrender dreams so readily!
Well, its good news aside from the transparidium shortage. If you are going
to substitute different materials you may want to consider doubling the
pylon height.
Best Regards,

what in the eternal scheme of things is really a wart.
