I wound up taking Aaron's suggestion and routing the line under the fuel valve.
Worried about chafe, and took some measure to prevent it. Thanks again to all
the great suggestions. I do not think that I could get through this project without
this web site. Remember Matt when it is time for his annual donation.

Subject: | Panel planning with Van's stock instrument panel |
I am finally coming to the end of the line on my install of the panel and associated
wiring. I am using the stock Vans panel (main upper panel, lower panel for
breakers, and throttle extension)
One of my goals has been to make the panel fully removable should the need arise
or should I want to make a major makeover.
The amp plugs help that a great deal, in making the panel removable, but one big
thing you should be aware of.
[b]Note: it is impossible to install (or remove) the entire panel as a unit in
the RV10 [/b entire panel meaning the upper and lower parts.
The lower panel on the RV10 has to be completely removed from the upper panel in
order to install the upper (larger part) in the aircraft after the windscreen
is installed. This can be done by completely removing all breakers and wires
from the lower panel and detaching it from the upper panel. The lower panel can
then be shoehorned in and out with care.
I also relieved the corner on the part F1042 that protrudes in a sharp point just
next to the door. This makes the panel install a bit easier and probably is
a good ideas for general cabin safety.

If you're going to run that SCAT right next to fuel lines or the
valve, I'd strongly recommend wrapping the line in reflective
1/4" insulation to keep the heat from being spread to the
valve and lines.

I second Tim's responsible post of separating combustible fluids from
electrical and heat sources. The tunnel does not win any design awards
for either function or aesthetics. Remember to leave access or ability
to remove obstructions when you need to service the fuel pump or fuel
filter. Keep an eye open for chaffing. After all these months, the
beauty of the Andair valve remains a wondrous improvement.

We're with Tim. If you wrap the tube with a thin heat barrier type fabric
you can run it anywhere in the tunnel. We're using a product from
http://www.chapmaninnovations.com/. You can use the product on the firewall
too.

Subject: | Advice request for N.E. trip (PA, NY, CT, RI, MA, NH, ME, VT) |
Tomorrow I'm going to take a zippy trip with the family to do some
N.E. State hopping. I think we'll stop in Philly overnight, and
then make it to BOS for the next night, and then a couple more
nights, returning home Sunday. Before the invitations start flowing
in too fast, it's gonna be a quick hopping trip with the kids, so
we probably will not be up for doing much hanging out and talking...
just flying from place to place and grabbing whatever courtesy
cars we can get, to see some sights....then back to the hotel
to swim and sleep. But, I could use some advice on a couple
things:
1) Must-see hot items in the various states
2) Advice on flying between PHL and BOS (as in, should I go
through, or stay fully away from NYC?)
3) Advice on airports to stay away from or airports that
would be particularly nice to stop at.
4) Any other quick tips.
The goal is to get to the PHL area tomorrow aft, and see the biggest
historic things there. Then, fly up past NYC and actually make
landings and hopefully see at least one small thing in CT and
RI. Then maybe head up to the BOS area for the night Friday.
Then fly up and stop in NH on the way (or way back from) ME.
Thinking of Booth Bay (wife's request) and maybe some whale watching
and stop for the night Saturday. Then maybe start flying Sunday
and stop in NH and VT at a couple cool places on the way to begin
a trip home. I've never been that far N.E., and neither has the
family, and we've got the goal to visit at least 49 of the 50
states with our plane. So with what looks like good weather this
weekend, we want to do our first trip there and check the states
off the list, and get ideas for a more extensive trip to our
favorite places some other year.
Any help, esp. with that segment from PHL to BOS going through
NYC would be great. I'd love to fly and see the main city sights,
but being totally unfamiliar with that airspace I'm justifiably
squeamish. I don't need to bust some big rule. Also, I usually
fly lots of direct legs, but I'm assuming as I get near these big
cities I'll be staying on airways a lot more....I just have no
idea what common routings they use.
Thanks in advance....just email me OFFLINE if you can, so I
don't bury the list server with replies. I've got my legs
planned to the Philly area (staying at KLOM) so far, and tonight
I'll be trying to finalize the KLOM to Boston area legs before
I depart on the trip. Can do the rest enroute if necessary.

It should be really easy.. NYC Class B goes only to 7,000ft... One option is
to follow V16... fly right over JFK... fly over Long Island (Deer Park, Calverton),
then zip across a little water onto CT side... and fly right to BOS area
(I'm guessing you're going to Norwood??)
Should be a pretty cool trip.. 7,500 and higher will keep you above Class B.. ..
on a nice day, you should have magnificent views of Manhattan...
Enjoy it...

Hi Tim
I am an ex-New Yorker now living (and building) in the Berkshire Mountain region
of western Ma.? If you are planning on visiting the greater NY metro area, you
can really see the city well.?
There is a VFR corridor from lower NY habor heading up the Hudosn River overflying
the Statue of Liberty with a great view of Manhattan.? If you are planning
on spending any time in the City (NY that is) Teterboro Airport in New Jersey
is a good place to overnight.? YOu would need a car to get to New York but the
ride is no more than 20 minutes out of rush hour.? I live in Monterey Ma which
is about 40 minutes (RV10 wise) from NYC with a nice little country airport,
GBR, available with fuel and service.? The Colors are great in New England so
a stop off is recommended. If you need a place to stay with your family, our
home is open to your and yours.? You can look take a peek at my 10 project if
you decide to stay the night.? Boston is less than an hour flight due east.?
There are several GA aiports in the Boston area for you to lay over at.
Let me know if you need any help beyond this.

and stop for the night Saturday. Then maybe start flying Sunday?
and stop in NH and VT at a couple cool places on the way to begin?
a trip home. I've never been that far N.E., and neither has the?
family, and we've got the goal to visit at least 49 of the 50?
states with our plane. So with what looks like good weather this?
weekend, we want to do our first trip there and check the states?
off the list, and get ideas for a more extensive trip to our?
favorite places some other year.?
?
Any help, esp. with that segment from PHL to BOS going through?
NYC would be great. I'd love to fly and see the main city sights,?
but being totally unfamiliar with that airspace I'm justifiably?
squeamish. I don't need to bust some big rule. Also, I usually?
fly lots of direct legs, but I'm assuming as I get near these big?
cities I'll be staying on airways a lot more....I just have no?
idea what common routings they use.?
?
Thanks in advance....just email me OFFLINE if you can, so I?
don't bury the list server with replies. I've got my legs?
planned to the Philly area (staying at KLOM) so far, and tonight?
I'll be trying to finalize the KLOM to Boston area legs before?
I depart on the trip. Can do the rest enroute if necessary.?
Tim?

Subject: | Re: Advice request for N.E. trip (PA, NY, CT, RI, MA, |
NH, ME, VT
That doesn't sound so bad at all. Right now I have that day
guestimated as this:
KLOM - SAX - KHVN (stop) - WACKY - KPVD (stop) - KMVY - (stop) -
KACK (stop) - MVY (flyover) - KOWD.
I figured that gets us to CT (not sure what we'll do there),
and to RI (figure Providence MUST have something to see), and
then out to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket just because those
are places you always hear about. Then just back and up to
Norwood for the evening.
The next day gets tougher, as I'd may be try to get to
Boothbay, then stop in NH and VT, and maybe try to get all
the way back to Hershey, PA or something to spend the night.
Thanks for the tip, I'll reroute the first part of that
day per your advice and see how that looks!

If you want to preserve your sanity and wallet, I'd avoid Teterboro.
Just check the Airnav prices and comments.
Lincoln Park and Caldwell are both nearby, have Enterprise available
and much less expensive. I've parked at CDW on 3 different trips this
year, with no problem...new FBO Avantair is cheaper than McDan, with
less facilities...depends on your needs.

I'm an ex-NYer too - Just came back and used McDan at Caldwell. Not
bad but I may try Avantair next time.
VFR over the top of Manhattan can be nice on a clear day - lot's of them
this time of the year. Flying over at dusk and watching it light up
(the Maule is slow) is like a video game.
The Hudson River corridor is nice too but requires study and a plan.
Enjoy it Tim - keep an eye out for migrating birds.
